I have a Guitar tutorial CD that I want to use again. No longer available.

Bought it in 1996 and it is designed to be run on a windows 3.1 or windows 95 operating system.

Is there any way I can get it to install on a windows 7 OS?

I've tried the setting the compatibility trick, but doesn't work.

I've read something about setting up virtual windows, but don't understand what they are talking about.

Really appreciate any tips on how to do this - for a computer dummy.

I would to try to locate a comparable tutorial that can continue to run as your equipment gets more outdated such as a DVD format that can run in a player or have a computer specialist that still has those operating system formats on a computer somewhere to convert to a DVD format or to disc data files so you can continue to pull the information out.

If it were me, I would setup a virtual machine (VM) and install Windows in it. The basic idea is you need a virtual machine hypervisor, something like VirtualBox, VM Ware, etc. You can then create a virtual machine which is essentially like a "computer in a computer" if that makes sense. The trick is that, just like a real computer, you need to install your OS. In this case, that is Windows 95 and hence my question about install disks. You could poke around the 'net for shared images but I'd bet it's going to be a little thin. You would have better luck with Windows 98. There's a chance that Win98 could run something from Win95...

This obviously isn't enough to instruct you on how to do it. It would be just enough to get some terms for googling.

I don't think that running VM's requires a computer expert but there is a bit of configuration and lots of options so it's quite a bit more involved than simply "download this link and then double click to install".

no - I included all the discs when I gave the computer to the Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store.

search for the same tutorial and possibly it has a newer release that is win7 compatible. otherwise i'd look for a newer one.
some of the stuff you are trying to do with vm's should best be left to those that have the knowledge or the time to tinker with as I would bet as you get it set up a wrong box checked will introduce lots more issues.

Emulating a Windows 3.1 system on a modern hardware is not that hard - you can check out tutorials on the youtube on how to do it. That would be the best way to play that stuff..
