purpose of exhaust baffle?

So, was the definite purpose of the baffle determined in the recent FAE thread?
Sound reduction or water intrusion prevention?
Just wanting to clarify before removal.

The baffle restricts the exhaust diameter from 4” down to about 1-3/4”. Preliminary data suggests that removing the baffle improves engine performance.

Baffle=Noise. It’s a pseudo muffler. Flappers (rubber) also exist usually at the flange and are anti-water devices.

My Supra had both. I ordered my FAE with a flapper and removed the baffle.
