View Full Version : Suck Gate / Ghetto Wedge / WakeShaper

I was hoping to solicit some feedback on DIY'ers that have made various suck gates, wedges, wakeshapers, etc and tested them to date. I have made probably 7 varieties of suck gates and two of the velcro wedge varieties and I have probably two favorites right now. I am curious on angle and paddle size especially and what has produced best wake.

I have posted some pics (hopefully) below that show the double paddle design I made and currently use. I got the idea after reading a post and seeing a picture of someone using two Nauticurl shapers in tandem. The paddles are 6x9", aluminum suction handle and PVC wood trim from Home Depot. I use the PVC trim exclusively now cause it is so light and cuts and shapes like wood. (In the pic I you'll see one of the paddles is HDPE cutting board cause it was salvaged from a previous build) The angle is 45 deg.

The other pics show a single aluminum suction cup design with a 110 degree paddle and slightly larger paddle. The paddle has holes drilled into it but I am not convinced they make a difference. The single suction cup has never fallen off BTW.

I like the ease of use of the single cup but I think, for my boat anyways (2007 XLV), the double paddle design at 45deg is the best to date.

Anyways thanks for the look and any input or experience you can offer.

I find the ghetto gate extension from a 15x20 sams cutting board works the best with a evenly weighted xlv straight extension. No angle

Do those float?

What is pvc trim? Tried searching that on the Home Depot site but nothing looks wide enough to make a suck gate.

On the double paddle design don't you need a different one for each side?

ghetto gate floats , my aluminum suck gate does not. that said very hard to find if it gets loose and you don't realize its gone in the lake .

It would have to be pretty big to be able to flip it. Possible if half sticks out of the water and a lot more below. I am happy with mine but thinking of sticking a bigger blade on. On the eternal search for the perfect wave.

There is a guy on WakeWorld that is using 2 suck-gates on a 22' Supra with 3K of ballast. Nauti Curl system
It's a monster behind the boat. Check out the pics. I know it's all about camera angles.

Would it be big with 3K and 1 gate? . . . . . probably.
Would 1 big gate do the same as 2 gates? . . . . . probably.
Would a home-made gate probably do this? . . . . . why not.

I went out this weekend, 2014 Mondo, driver, 2 guys sitting on surf side, 3300 lbs ballast - 2200 lbs in rear ballast, 400 lbs center, 700 bow, and a Nauticurl. Made a huge wave, over waist high for a 6'2" surfer. Unfortunately no pics.

Sorry for the delayed responses guys I thought I would have got a notifier if someone posted on my thread. Couple answers and few more pics:

The double suck gate floats quite nicely because of the PVC trim. It is fairly light and not as dense as HDPE board. I used 1x10 trim board from HD in Canada. It is made by a company called VERANDA. It shapes and cuts like pine.

I don't have any videos of the same but I'll try and find some pics.

I have only used the double on the starboard side cause everyone is regular foot in my family. I do like to heel surf from time to time so I'll try it out on other side next spring.

I hope the pics show.

I like that PVC trim idea.

Did you every try a single paddle that is larger vs your double-paddle?
Right now you are running two-offset 6x9. What about a single 12x9?

Sounds like you have a 'lab' running if you tried 7+ versions.

I have tried a paddle about 12" x 10" (the full width of 1x10 trim board) and it caused significant amount more splash onto the boat and was a fair bit harder to steer and I did not see or notice any wave difference. I surfed both back to back. Now the angle of the large paddle was like 70deg (or 110deg depending how you measure) I was thinking of trying a large paddle at a fair bit slighter angle such as 30deg much like Surfgate but that will have to wait till next year.

Good info.

I wish I had more time to try stuff like this.
