Lake Billy Chinook Labor Day weekend. A fraction of the people that are normally there, I guess the smoke kept most people at home. Didn't bother us Friday or Saturday as it was above us but settled onto us on Sunday.

As many of you know, the Columbia River gorge has two big fires burning on the outskirts of town. The fires are less than 40 miles from my house. Since the weekend we've had tons of smoke, horrible air quality and ash raining down on us covering our cars and boats...

The fires have been burning hot and FAST and actually jumped the Columbia River to the Washington side. A smoldering stick that was 8" long and an inch in diameter found its way to a gas station 2 miles away.

This isn't my picture, but gives an idea of what's happening.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/XQ7JTxYNWt4/maxresdefault.jpg

Yesterday morning, I woke to the boat covered in ash, even though it's parked under the carport. Before I could leave for work, I took out the shop vac and sucked up as much as possible. I then had to break out the Vinyl Sauce to clean the ash that smeared onto the seats. Finally I threw on the snap cover because I had to get my butt into work... But you could see ash falling from the sky like snowflakes.

Last night, the winds shifted and the ash was MUCH less prevalent. I decided that my lungs could handle a little exposure and my wife, a buddy, and I took the boat out tonight. It was like having a DENSE fog, but it was all smoke. And with the river East of us being shut down to ALL river traffic, there were few commercial barges to be found. It was so empty on the river that it was kinda spooky. And the water was so smooth that I was able to slalom ski right from the boat launch on the main channel.

Yeah, I felt a little crazy and was just laughing at us playing on the river in the middle of all this. But that's how I roll. Make the best of a crazy situation.

Normally in this spot, you could see Mt Hood prominently displayed in the background. But not this week.
https://i.imgur.com/yUAkPLK.jpg

The one thing that took me by surprise was the surface of the river was COATED with burnt pine needles. They were everywhere, forming a dense film in many places. miles and miles of pine needles.
https://i.imgur.com/VH83ZX5.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcWmUMQ1D-c

All in all, it was a crazy night. Yeah, air quality is rated as unhealthy, but I don't smoke or have asthma and won't suffer any lasting long term effects.

Motored back to the dock on crazy smooth water and covered the boat again for the drive home. Definitely an adventure.

This was at 6pm, looking due east on a "cloudless" 88 degree day with all the dense smoke. Again, Mt Hood should be prominent in the background.

Haven't been on the water since I just about lost my boat in a wind storm the middle of August. Got caught out in eastern Washington on the river with 30mph winds with 9 on board about 2 miles from anything. Dodging 6ft swells the best I could but still taking waves clear up over the windshield. Took on enough water that we had cushions floating and were using the handheld tsunami 1200 as an emergency bilge. Stereo is fried or at least partially - I think all 3 exile amps took a swim. I haven't done much looking into it yet honestly - haven't had the stomach for it yet. Biggest scare I've had on the water in 10+ years - I think 2 more over the bow would have been the end of the MobiusV.

The fires have been a big distraction. Earlier this week we had some relatives who live in the area evacuated at 3am and showed up on our doorstep with a few keepsakes and their pets. This is what it looked like on their road the night they left.

So far the flooring has been great. No need for water. My kids or switching riders keeps it damp and cool. With that said, I can see where certain circumstances it might need some water.

I was having to take carpet out almost every trip because of the smell and it just could not get dry. I won't be going back again.

Last week the ash from the forest fires subsided enough that I took the boat out. As you can see, the smoke from the fires was still prevalent (that's NOT fog). And the whole surface of the water was filled with floating pine needles. But it was just crazy fun to have the entire river to myself. The Interstate freeway has been closed for over a week. Even commercial river traffic was closed further upstream. It's very rare that it's smooth enough to ski the main channel of the Columbia River right from the launch.

going fast, maybe.

we plugged up in the end of a canyon in lake powell from a bunch of floater stuff on the water, idling, had to take the lines from the intake to the engine off and clean stuff out. (what the floater stuff was, is a completely new thread discussion). engine heated up over temp really fast and shut to limp mode and we stopped etc. running fine since.

I've been watching the temp gauge carefully!

At idle, the pine needles weren't anywhere close to under the water enough to get near the intakes. When emptying the ballast, I saw none come out (I have above water line draining on all my pumps). They are remarkably buoyant.

I checked the transmission cooler and maybe one pine needle was in there. a couple small pieces of grit that I probably sucked up at the launch at some point. But other than that, pretty good.

That said, here's a video of what the pine needles looked like in the middle of the river that day. (they're all gone now BTW. swept out to sea).

I was pretty surprised! No joke! I have some Cire board shorts. they're nice for sure. Mine never have the wally pocket hangin' though! Also note that I'm rockin' one of my favorite pairs of Hurley Phantom shorts... (Hurley Phantom > CIRE)

They're good shorts. I won't argue that. But there's not better than my O'neill hyperfreak or my Hurley Phantoms. The water shedding and 4 way stretch of those are definitely better than the CIRE. Don't get me wrong, I rock the CIRE too. and I dig the length. They're for sure on the podium... Just not at the VERY top!

Kane you didn't say anything about your shorts!

For me, I go cheap and hope they stay on. During wet suit season I only use compression shorts under the wet suit as they are more comfortable. I won't share a picture of me in those.

Spotted a max getting the prop upgraded and some new bumpers on rub rail installed today. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170918/612dcd729a8b8d6df0985305ba0c91a0.jpg

Can't see the suckgate as it's stuck on the other side.

I just read about the fires up in Oregon and Washington. We had it pretty bad the week of the Labor Day weekend. Extremely hot (115) with smoke in the air. I will now quit bitchen after reading some of these posts and seeing some of those pics!

Season ending bargain demo board, Lakewakes WiFi 56". Super fun board, great speed. Glad I bought it! Won't oust my Soulcraft Jimmi8, but will def shred it on occasion! Carries my 225# with EASE on a slammin' SE450 wave.

92 degrees today. This 10 year old girl is still rocking. The winterization threads already bouncing around make me sad.

Last solid day out, 90’s and the water is still warm. Surfing, skiing, tubing, drinking beer...we got all the important stuff in!

Winterize it in a week. Depressing.

It's officially Fall. But that isn't stopping us. The day started cloudy but at least we had the river to ourselves.

https://i.imgur.com/iuQ6DNV.jpg

Water temps around 60. So got to try out my new Hurley Phantom 202 fullsuit. Pretty damn comfy.
https://i.imgur.com/jNkBLhI.jpg

Had a great slalom set, then wakeboard, then surf.

Got my son suited up in his wetsuit and he got a nice long surf set in.

The after rotator cuff surgery last year, it seems the wife has been favoring her "good" shoulder all season, so the orthopedic shoulder specialist told her that she needs to take 4 to 6 weeks off. She had a great summer run, but is a little bummed to be wrapping it up early.

To ease the pain, we decided to play on the water in downtown Portland where we could dock and walk over to a waterfront restaurant for lunch in the sunshine. Cajon Blackened Salmon and Blackberry Lemon Drops help when you can't surf.

After lunch, we figured we'd just motor back to the launch (we had Cirque du Soleil that night). But when the water is butter smooth with no boats in sight at 4:15pm, you just stop motoring, suit up, and grab the ski for another set.

Some pictures from the first fall weekend in Columbus

Opps no one watching the surfer

Fuel bill needs sent to this kid, it's more than his food bill now. JK glad he's putting hours in behind the boat.

Second time in a week I didn't clean the boat. This crew did some nice work.

Even though we're 100 miles from the Ocean, the tides completely affect our river levels and will cause swings of 3+ feet in water level over the course of 5 hours. So yesterday we got to the launch and the sand bar across the middle of the launch between the two docks was down to around a foot or 1.5' deep. So, launching from there was a no go.

Luckily it's only 10 to 15 minutes to get to another launch on the Portland side of the river. And even better, the wind speed and water traffic was so low, that I was able to slalom right down the main channel straight from the launch! (that almost never happens!)

Sure it was cloudy, but for water like this, I'll take it. Water temp is down to the low 60's.

My sons 3rd time wake surfing. Not to bad for a DD with a swell wake shaper. The wife even gave it a first try and seemed to enjoy it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170926/82ca3cd89c57b6a79845ae5c18464a25.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170926/6269006eb4aa273ddaa35a4049be353b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170926/6577308525e6f6b9e3b704dcaf7a41f5.jpg

Testing out the bargain bin Lakewakes WiFi board, but I lost a contact lens so I was looking for it [emoji854].

Honestly, it was a little lacking for the crew we had on board. My reversible pump that would fill my 400 under the surf side seats and the 250 under the bow seat was totally unresponsive and we had to deal with 650 pounds less than normal. #boo

(Unless you're talking about the wakeboard wake, which was pretty fun with the 1180 and 10 people!)

Well, the '06 is off to Rinkers for the trade in. Hopefully my new (ish to me lol) SA will be ready to roll when I get back from this long a** trip!
Spent all last night pulling the W6's and amp and putting the custom factory box back in with a Memphis DVC and kicker 600.1
