Man hit, killed by boat on Tennessee River Sunday

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — UPDATE: TWRA says a man in his forties died after being hit by a boat in the Tennessee River Sunday.
Doug Markham with TWRA says the 48-year-old man was wakeboarding with three others on the Tennessee River.

Markham says he died after he was hit by the boat's propeller after getting in the water to wakeboard.

The boat, Markham says was a Moomba Ski Boat.

Markham says it's too early to tell if any charges will be filed.

Hamilton County dispatchers say a person has been hit by a boat in the Tennessee River.

They say it happened around 6:15 near Harrison Bay Road.

It's not clear how seriously the person is hurt.

NewsChannel 9 has a crew on the way to the scene to gather more details.

UPDATE: TWRA officials said a man has died after being hit by the propeller of a ski boat on Chickamauga Lake on Sunday.
Hamilton County dispatchers told Channel 3 it happened around 6:15 p.m. near Harrison Bay Road.

Investigators with the TWRA said the 48-year-old man was in a boat with three other people. He got out of the boat to wakeboard when the TWRA said he got hit by the propeller.

Officials are contacting the man's family before releasing his identity.

The TWRA said it's unclear if alcohol was involved or if charges will be filed.

Wow. That is close to home. We should all consider moments such as this to be reminded to never be overly cavalier about what we are doing at the helm.

I get the eyeroll from my son everytime I ask him to let me know he is clear when he gets in the water. Its just a habit. I dont start the motor until I hear him say "clear". Im showing him this story to remind him that things can go wrong quickly. Bad things happen to good people every day.

I'll be leaving after work to assist dive rescue on a body recovery from an incident yesterday. We usually recover about 10 drowning victims per year but this year has been surprisingly quiet.

I forgot to mention one incident that could affect all of us and that is heavy milfoil. We had a recent drowning where someone at night swam into the milfoil and drowned. Unless you have a PFD on or standing on the bottom, milfoil will wrap you up as you attempt to swim through it and prevent leg and arm movements. So avoid swimming near milfoil besides it is nasty stuff.
