View Full Version : Dome letters revisited...

I know there have been some previous threads on this topic and I'm looking for some guidance and/suggestions.
In the offseason I removed all my boat decals, stripped her clean, naked...no more tribal stickers! (lets pause for a moment of silence as I may be the last holdout).
Looks like the latest boats are running a mix between new design decals and the chrome domed letters. I'm leaning towards the chrome domed letters and was wondering if anyone has found a good source/ price for OEM or a quality after market.

Looking for any and all guidance.
Thanks

Same here on Domed Numbers. Though about going with the black chrome to match the other lettering but couldn't justify the extra cost. I think the two toned looks great.

Are you looking for the large Moomba metal chromed letters? If so some pop up here from time to time but it is rare. Otherwise there are the epoxy letters from domednumbers.com which people are showing here. I did the "Moomba" lettering with them and the rest I did with vinyl after stripping my bot this spring.

Time to dump PhotoBucket 5:00! May I suggest Imgur, I have been very pleased with the switch so far.

Couldn't agree more.

Yes, I'm looking for the large Moomba letters as well as the smaller registration numbers. Does domednumbers do the large as well? Also, 5:00, I couldn't see your pic. I just see that 3rd party message. Any chance you can upload some more?

Here you go. Switched providers. I just had domed numbers do what you see in the pic and I did the rest in vinyl. It is a sparkly dark red on black. Turned out really well.

Haha you can see the boat shaped white polish below the boat. I went over it four times with the polisher (two heavy, one medium then wax), drop cloth down but it was still a mess. I happened to know we were getting the driveway resealed the following month so it didn't matter.

Are those actually domed with flexible epoxy like their registration numbers or flat vinyl? I remember a thread a while ago that someone had them try doming large lettering and it didn't work well.

I have only one side in the official Moomba 3D lettering, was waiting to drop $250 on the other side sometime this summer...

I don't have any close shots of the letters but they are the raised epoxy, glitter, domed letters. It was scary putting them on though. You only get one shot to get it right. They are super sticky. There was a lot of measuring and crossing of fingers. I had one of my kids help me apply them with no problems.

I assume you are happy with them?

I'd love to see some close up photos when you get a chance, maybe some angle shots too. Sounds like they figured out how to do larger lettering now

I only saw one small place where the clear overflowed into the middle one of the "O's" about 2mm. Other than that it was good. I left it as is.
I won't get back to the boat for three more weekends unfortunately. I am coming back from 2 weeks out of the country so I may not make it then but I am pushing my wife to go as soon as we get back. Why rest? I put in a reminder to take some pics then. Hopefully it isn't too late.

I will wait! No rush really. I would bet I can get 2 sides from domed letters cheaper than the factory 3Ds. I would do chrome though since my hulls black, wonder if that changes their capabilities.

Does the face of the lettering look wavy or is it pretty smooth and clear?

And the pictures of the boats are factory, not the letters they are selling. Probably crap not even worth the low price.

They are smooth and clear. They have a nice gloss to them. I waxed over them also with no problems right after applying.
I paid $210 total for two sets complete. That is probably less than one side of the 3D chrome letters. Personally I liked this route better. I have a 10 year old boat so it keeps some of that time while bringing it up to date with less vinyl on the background. On the other hand the OEM 3D letters would bring it more up to date. Just having the "Moomba" cleaned it up a lot without the GG sticker in the background. I did my own two color vinyl on the back for my "XLV". I found a font I liked and tweaked the crap out of it. This is the same color as used by domed numbers.

Full before. I don't have many before photos as I wasn't too proud of how it looked. The letter "B" was stolen from both sides, WTF?

Before. I liked the graphics but they had a lot of dock rash from previous owner. I buffed out all but two very small scratches that no one will notice. I was amazed how well it worked. I had never used a rotary before. Turns out things really do buff out.

During. You can see why I had to go over it four times with the rotary. It was the color "Chalk White".

After. The "XLV" and registrations were black with a dark red outline vinyl from my machine. These were the opposite color scheme of the MOOMBA. I was just happy to see reflections in the hull like the trailer jack!

Finally got to put the name on the boat. It is a second marriage for us. You can see I had only replaced the vinyl on the left and right of the sun pad at the time. I have since replaced the center also! I matched the graphic colors from the new vinyl colors. Added a DIY swim platform also A lot of work for its 10th birthday!

Here are the pix from the weekend. Sorry they aren't optimal. It was a windy day and low water at my dock so I just took it out, surfed and came back onto the lift. I was hoping to get pics with the sun blasting them but here they are in the shade before I cleaned and wiped it down.

Thanks, love the FAE! That one is on its 3rd season. I hit it with some Slimy Grimy and it came out looking like new.
