My wife is going to get me the FAE for my birthday. I've wanted this thing for years. Last time there was a group buy on here I think we got $50 off and up to $70 if we got enough buyers. Please let me know if you have interest. I have a call in to Christina. I'll post up the details shorty if this is going to be a go. I'll be placing my order when they call me back today.

Here's a link to their site:

http://www.freshairexhaust.com

Also, anyone with helpful tips, raves, etc., please share your advice, etc. Thanks!

EDIT * * * * * * * * * * This will happen in the off season. You can order your FAE now or in December when we do the group buy. * * * * * * * * * *

I might be interested, I have been trying to research how it does with the new raptor motors and haven't found anything yet. Can anyone chime in with positives or negatives for the raptor (400 torque version ideally)? I have seen a picture with a FAE installed on a newer Moomba and its not the prettiest but if it cuts down the noise I might be on board.

Does it have to be for a moomba?

No, but keep it quiet around here unless it is a Supra.

These are engineered to be completely compatible with the engine. it doesn't void your warranty, also it doesn't cause any extra restriction to the exhaust, otherwise it would void the warranty. I have been running them for 7 years on 2 different boats. Trust me when I say its one of the best up-gades you can make to the boat, not only does it lower the exhaust sound and make it so much more enjoyable in the cabin, its a HUGE safety upgrade for your surfers and if you have people who like to sit on the back of the boat. (illegal in most states but not all)

What I would add, for people with the slightly older Moomba, Supra if it has Plastic Exhaust flanges that you use screws to attach the rubber sleeve from the FAE to the boat.

This actually started with me, and FAE now recommends officially that you do this. I almost lost my first FAE because of this. They give you aluminum rings to go in the plastic exhaust flange but these still tend to slip over time.

My other tip would be pay the extra for the quick release setup on the FAE. You might think you will never need to remove it but if you ever need to remove the swim deck, you will have to remove the FAE as well.

They have an option now for a Flapper I think they call it, its a small flap in the FAE that closes when a wave pushes on the back of the boat so water doesn't go back into your exhaust system.

Unless you tie up a lot, or leave the boat in the water a lot this isn't a big deal to have.

I do have it on mine, at the time FAE added it to my system because I help promote them so much, now that I have my lake house I am thankful I have it.

I personally would not do the powder coating option, I had my first one in Black and over time it started peeling back from the pipes. I have stainless and its no much nicer.

When we got the 13 Mojo because it has Cats I figured we wouldn't need it, after a couple times out, Claudia and my best bro were complaining of headachs. I ordered mine right then.

When I run the sukgate and the boat is more level I can see the steam in the exhaust going right into the riders face sometimes. That's enough for me. Don't recall that happening before but I'm not going back cuz I love the surf wave. This should take care of that problem.

If you give me a chance to rave about my FAE I will. What Mandley said above. I got mine with the flapper but without the quick release. After kicking myself for a couple of years I just installed the quick release. I rarely remove the platform but for cleaning and so on it is an easy job now.

I no longer have people complaining about headaches and feeling crappy after our long 4 hour surf sessions.

I think they are off on their noise reduction figures, I find it to be BETTER than what they say. I can now hear the chop hitting against the hull and we can have conversations in close to normal voices. It makes teaching easier because we can communicate with the surfer much easier now.

Install was easy and now in my 3rd season it still looks like brand new. Apart from surf upgrades it is the best upgrade I have done. I really can't say enough.
Larry made sure I had my quick release upgrade quickly. I had my boat taken apart and waiting another week would have meant putting it back together and having to redo it again because of my schedule. Huge time saver on that part. I didn't even ask for a quick turn but it came up in conversation and he said he would take care of it.

Not affiliated, just a very happy customer!

Yup the down pipe is more then long enough you wont have that issue. I have had the Mojo almost on the rub rail and never had a problem lol.

Anybody know what the difference is between normal mount and side mount? The pictures on their site show side mount as mounting across the platform brackets but a few inches below the platform. But, there's no pic showing where the normal mount goes. They say you have to take the brackets off the platform so I assume you drill down through the top and then reattach to the platform. But, isn't there a high spot where the bolt head goes? Seems like the side mount is a much better system. Does it work with the quick release clamps. If so, I'll sent them some much better pics when mine is done and also post an instructional here and on wakegarage.com.

The side mount mounts with a cross bar to the insides of the brackets. From there two bolts come up from the FAE and mount to the bar. Either way the bolts come up from the FAE but it depends where you want them to mount.
I opted for the side mount because it made a lot more sense to me and was easy to do. You don't see the mounting system anyway since it is so close to the platform unless it is on a trailer. It is all stainless so it looks fine.

It took a long time to get it done and somehow shipped with a couple of parts missing but I have it installed. I have not done the write up yet and all the pics are still on my phone except for the one below. I have to get out this weekend and test it but here's a preview pic. Mine is the "Y" pipe with the side mount and the quick release. I am ordering better pins for both the platform and the quick release so it's easier to get the platform off as we remove every time we come home.

It looks fantastic. Can't wait to test it out this w/e.

We installed and test-surfed ours this weekend. It took us roughly 6 hours to install as we made a few errors along the way.

The end result is a tremendous difference. Less sound from the exhaust pipes is very obvious and great, but for me, being able to stand or sit right on the back of the boat and either watch or coach is a huge quality of life difference well worth the investment.

Here's a few shot of the finished install:

Hayden, what was your "Z" measurement when you were all done?

Mine ended up just a bit longer than specified (end of down pipe a couple inches higher than center of prop). You can't tell from pics and it works perfectly. I think the fact the boat runs nose high ends up putting the exhaust right in the center of the wash anyway.

I just installed mine two weeks ago. My Z measurement was around 3.5-4". This was higher than the instructions wanted but that was the only way to get full travel from the wakeplate. It does not seem to affect functionality and they didn't mention anything when I sent in my warranty info.

We were approximately 3" on ours with about 0.3" from wakeplate to manifold in the raised position. I was worried that if we went any closer we'd get vibration or metal-on-metal noise/damage.

Personally flapper is for those who leave the boat in water, or party cove a lot.

Isn’t it for sudden decelerations to prevent water from bull rushing the exhaust?

No the flapper is to keep water from rollers going up the exhaust

If the engine is running it’s nearly impossible to backflush water into the exhaust

So I contacted FAE to try and sort out a few details prior to the group buy in december. Their response left me with more questions, but I'm sure the knowledgeable guys on here will have the answer. My question is whether to replace the muffler/baffle that they refer to in the response below. It's only $20, so it's not a question of price, its one of performance/warranty. Read their response below and let me know what your thoughts are.

"Thanks for your interest in our exhaust systems; I know you’ll love the addition to your boat. Sorry that part of our website is currently down. I'd be happy to help with your order by email or phone. A system for your boat is $520 for the brushed stainless finish, standard welds, and internal flapper FAE. Upgrading to the blended welds will be an additional $40. This is where they hand polish the outside welds for a more smooth, seamless look to the system. You also have the option of adding the cat-back system/baffle replacement to your boat as well, for an additional $20. (In regards to the Cat-back option: Many boats have a very restrictive muffler/baffle aft of the catalytic converter. The baffle restricts the exhaust diameter from 4” down to about 1-3/4”. Preliminary data suggests that removing the baffle improves engine performance. At this time we have only identified the baffle on the Indmar engine with a single exhaust outlet. If you have a different engine but are interested, look under the engine at the exhaust hose and see if there is a metal coupling tube in-line. Some boats (like Malibu and MB) have the baffle built into the exhaust outlet you removed when you installed your FAE.) **Please note that some of this pricing will change in the next few weeks.

I’ve attached pictures of similar installations for reference. For the installation, you will need Boat Life and we recommend the use of Debond (for the outlet removal of the process). Both products are available through us, or can be purchased elsewhere. If you decide to purchase this kit through us, it is $60 and includes the Debond, Boat Life, and wooden shims. We are currently running an estimated 2 week turnaround (possibly sooner).

Please let me know if you have additional questions."

Not uncommon for pollution control stuff to be removed to regain power. You may need to check to see if there is more junk than just the baffle to look at. Every one of my street legal Austrian (KTM) dirt bikes had the California pollution controls removed when I bought them and the engine remapped to make it similar to their off road versions. Removing a restriction plate (not a spark arrestor) in the muffler was one item removed. I'd get about three pounds of pollution control parts in return.

dakota4ce
11-28-2017, 12:06 PM
This baffle wasn’t a pollution control item on my Supra—it was a pseudo muffler attempt. And might I add very restrictive looking. I tried to punch it out, but the welds were excellent, so I replaced with a chunk of plain pipe from FAE—which is the $20 item you’re referring to above.

Much easier for me then trying to cut that thing out somehow.
