View Full Version : Lets see how you BBQ on the boat?

Hello all,
I have seen guys grilling on the swim deck with a BBQ on some sort of clamp-on pedestal. Anyone have pics and or information on where to get such a thing? I'm not sure I want to risk the mess or potential burns on the boat but I love the idea of grilling a Rib Eye without going ashore.

Seeing that the gas tank and blower exhaust is back there, I would think this location is a very bad idea.
Usually on a pontoon the grill is at least halfway toward the bow, if not at the bow.

That's a very good point. I've seen this set up many times and never thought about it from that perspective.

Never on a wake boat, that's what the shore, dock, toon, houseboat, etc. is for.

Iuno, we did it more times than I can count with this little propane guy. Just folded the legs down and got after it.

Whatever happened to that guy who mounted a grill to his bow rail? We called it the "Grillobius". Have to see if I can find pics. Likely gone now.
RobertJ. I think he's gone. Oh well. My search for the "Grillobius" led to this thread but the pics are gone:

"RobertJ".
Loved that guy. Great sense of humor.
He even talked of adding a slurpee machine to his boat.

We have done hot dogs and brats, but we got a really good metal thermos, and filled it with boiling water and put the dogs into the thermos. They'd stay hot in there all day and we'd be able to have our hot lunch.
The only time we've actually grilled, we brought the grill, camp chairs, and a folding aluminum table and did it all on the shore...

LOL, Kid Approved!
This is probably the way i'll go. A small gas BBQ and store it in a Rubbermaid tote.

Strap it to the platform and stash it in the woods until it's time to grill. I like to find a place I can stand in knee deep water to grill.

Lol, this was taken about 5 years ago and it's been a few since I brought along my "outboard". You get some funny looks on the water like that but it's hard to beat burgers and dogs around 3pm!

Out west, many areas have banned charcoal due to the fire risk as they do most years so propane is it.

If you have a grill on a boat, you are running a well disguised pontoon boat.

You can use the indoor grill on your boat. It is a comfortable device that you can use in your kitchen as well as on the boat. I have found some reviews at https://themybuy.com/best-indoor-grills/ (https://themybuy.com/best-indoor-grills/).

This is the play. Make a Pontoon friend and you've got the best of both lake worlds.

I can't believe no one is running that super expensive Grill that has the pole mounted under the swim deck and comes up out of the water haha
The amount of ads I see for it on instagram made it seem wildly popular
It even has some sort of storage bag that you can keep it in the wake tower
Edit: Its called the wake n grill

My thoughts on a grill and my friends thoughts are we want one cheap enough if for some reason it flared up we could toss it over the side of the pontoon and not be mad about it. Toss that Wake N Grill over be a bad day.
Edit: we don't cook burgers on his for that reason.

I like the idea of a grill easy to trash on a boat, the amount of grease and grime is not something you want to keep lugging in and out

LOL, the wake N grill is $1200 dollars!! I didnt pay that much for my giant Webber home BBQ. I think that thing was a grand and I pissed and moaned about that for a while. Hard pass here.
Little Webber hibachi on shore works just fine.

No grill on or near my boat, I envision Greasy burgers and hot dogs with mustard or ketchup dripping everywhere.
I can wait to get home to fire up the grill or come home to a smoked pork butt or brisket

Warm weather cannot get here fast enough (sorry Texas), and neither can my Lake Norris trips.

Larry...
First off beautiful SA you just bought.
Second, where on Norris are you heading? I have been to Alder Springs area north of Deerfield resort. Awesome location but stayed away from the resort, gets crowded.
Going south east this summer, over by Bubba Brew's. Never been to the south side before so we shall see.

That pic is the house my Columbus OH buddy rented on Norris last summer. It’s in a cove behind Straight Creek Marina, real close to Cedar Creek.
When we head to Norris, probably 2x/month in summer, we spend our time on the quiet side.
Takes me a little over an hour to get the boat in the water from Ktown.
But you need to visit the west-side for a day or two to check out the scene. Weekends are nuts.
I will give you my contact info and we can hook up this summer to ride or hang out.
I can also tell you the locations of some rope swings or jump bridge on that side of the lake.
Lots of good water. This was the view every am for that early wakeboard set. Love getting a set in, then heading back for breakfast.

Yeah.....
Norris is so nice.
Being north of Deerfield in late July was calm. The house we rented was in a cove north of Alder Springs. Going to the south east side this time. Hopefully it won't be too crowded. Heard this side is less traveled by northerners like myself.
If Norris is the place we could always plan a moomba/supra outing!!!

Cincy dealer has done Norris events in early Aug - not last year w/Covid.
There was talk about moving the Supra Reunion there. Two summers ago it was Dale Hollow. No word on that, I think the organizers are busy.
Wake9 was going to have a Surf event last fall. Covid put and end to that. The Polar Bear event. I'm betting that will happen, just a feeling after talking to Robert.

Is it worth getting a grill made specifically for boats? That Wake n Grill looks pretty cool, fits well.
If I get one, would probably go with gas, wonder if the Magma's would work. Looks to be the best realistic option: https://citimarinestore.com/citiguide/boat-grill-safety-tips-guide-how-to-grill-safely-on-a-boat/
Or is it not worth the spend... wait till I get back on land?

You're going to have a zillion people say "do it on shore" or "get a pontoon". but it's your boat, so do what you want. these are the same people that freak out knowing that I don't ban glass on my boat.
Realistically you're going to have to deal with storage and mounting it somewhere that grease dripping doesn't ruin your upholstery. We've done dogs and then kept them in a thermos. Or since I've added a storage compartment above the engine (affectionately known as the "pizza warmer") we can pre-cook things and have them warmed there

I have this little guy. It’s great for hauling onshore. Plastic tub holds grill, charcoal, utensils, plates, chips etc. great way to break up the day if your lake has a beach or area to relax. A shade tree break is not all bad on hot Texas days.
