View Full Version : My New 16 Moomba Helix - Help Me Setup!!!

Hello fellow Moomba owners. I'm geeked to be apart of the surfing sport. I guess let me start by giving you a little background. I've been surfing for a few years off the back of a buddies Nautique, and finally decided that surfing is what I really want to do with free time on the water. I'm sure I'll pull a wakeboard or tube or two, but surfing - that's where it's at for me! I own my own repair shop, and also worked at several marinas in the area so I'm pretty fluent in tech talk when it comes to boats, along with installations etc. So when it came to picking out a boat, I didn't need anything super fancy, just pretty bare bones as long as it surfed. My buddies Nautique was great, but I hated the touch screen interface and all the menus. Like if someone was surfing, and you wanted to change settings while surfing you had to be in a certain screen, but heaven forbid if you wanted to change songs as that was in a whole different menu that you had to go through etc. At one point he got a dead spot in the screen and we couldn't do anything that used that section of screen for 3 weeks. Totally sucked. Anywho, the switch dash I feel fixes those delays, and simplifies operations, and works better for me. If a switch dies, I grab one from the hardware store until the moomba switch arrives, and we are good to go! Anyways, that was why we choose the boat we did. Didn't wanna pay for the bells and whistles we wouldn't want.
So my boat does have a few good upgraded parts. It does have the auto flow 2.0 surf package, and the color autowake system installed, which from the sounds of it wasn't normally installed on the 2016 Helix. Along with a few other bells and whistles that don't really aid in surfing anyways.
So the question I have is what do I need for the ultimate surf wave? What has worked for you? As far as props, bags, autowake settings, speeds, etc. I'm sure I can tweak settings, but it be nice to have a good idea before I get out there. I do have the factory rear and front bow bags, but the dealer never gave me the info packet on the boat yet. The bow bag seems to be decent size, but the tears look small to me. Any feedback would be golden. Thanks guys.

Minimum 1100's in the rear. You probably have the stock 650's in there that Moomba puts in all of the boats. I think they need to get with the program and drop the 650's and just ship all boats with 1100's.

Is there any special fittings or what not a need to look for? Is it as simple as just verifying the dimensions, changing the fill times, etc???

Fittings will be the same. Just update the fill times with larger bags

Is there a specific brand you would recommend? I was looking at some online that had the same exact fittings as my Mumbai with 50 x 24 x 24 dimensions. I'm going to measure those today to make sure they will fit.

Not sure what you mean by Place? If you have the factory center and front bags you will be fine. It's the rears that are too small from the factory. For surfing, you will want to fill every bag you have completely full, then play with the tabs to dial in the wave for each side. FYI, the plate settings for each sides wave will not always be identical due to the prop rotation effect. As for the center, I almost always have that all the way up.

I have the newer autowake system in the 2017 so I can only set the list angle. For the 2016 you set the deployment percentage. Others on here will have more relevant recommendations in that regard. I.e. What percent to have each surf tab set to for port or starboard surf settings.

Thanks I am still trying to get mine set up. I upgraded the rear to the 900 when I ordered the boat . Wish I would have just waited and bought the 1100 or 1440 Enzo's. I normally have a small crew just my wife and my two year old son, so the extra weight would be nice. I think I am going to upgrade later on For now I ended up using about 300lbs of rubber weights under each bag in the rear lockers. Thanks for your help.

You guys with autowake; are you able to fill your bags fully? Or does the system need some room to add and remove water to maintain the set angles?
Stazi

You can still do everything manual except surf. Once you select a surf side, the system automatically deploys the tabs and adjust water to get the roll angle you set.

Thanks for the reply.
So while surfing, are the rear bags pretty much filled? 90% filled? Does the system like to keep them at a certain baseline?
I've heard it is hard to keep as much weight in the boat with the autowake.
Stazi
04-29-2017, 11:37 PM
It does not keep them 100% but with 1100's it makes a really nice wave, even if it empties a bit out of one side.

I wonder what's up with mine then. I have the autowake system, but I can turn it of and setup things manually and activate the surfgates and cruise control without the autowake trying to adjust everything.

There's three settings on the speed control/Autowake 2.0:
1. Manual - no cruise, but you can adjust wakeplate. Can't change surfplates
2. Cruise - same as above but you have the top speed fixed by what you set with the cruise toggle lever. Again only wakeplate that adjust pitch can be change.
3. Autowake - same as cruise setting, but if the wake-side switch is in middle, the CPU assumes wakeboarding. Boat will adjust wakeplate to get the set point for pitch. You can put as much ballast in as you want with manual ballast switches, but computer will adjust those to reach pitch set point that is in your vessel setting for wake. If the surf-side switch is set to port or starboard, it assumes surfing and will deploy surfplates automatically to reach the roll angle you set in the vessel settings (for surf), as well as pitch.
You cannot set a % on the surfplates like in the previous version of Autowake. With the Autowake 2.0, the boats were fitted with mercury switches under the dash to detect roll and pitch angle. You set the angles and the system adjusts the plate angles to reach those, as best it can. The GUI for boats with Autowake 2.0 is completely different to the previous version too.

That's not how mine works. I mean I have the three settings you speak of, but even if I'm in cruise mode, I can deploy the surf tabs. For example today I tried the autowake settings, didn't like the wave. I then put the boat into cruise mode, and then for the heck of it filled front and port sides 100 and left starboard empty. I was listing wicked, but had a pretty sweet wave. When I switch the surf gates in just cruise mode they still operated. So I'm super lost on what mines doing

Not sure I have the answer for you here, but keep in mind that '17 autowake uses factory presets for percentages/ etc. You may need to adjust to what you want/ need.
As soon as you adjust ballast bags, you need to recalibrate all sorts of things. What I have learnt in my early education is that every change means a major adjustment in settings.
And it takes time. And many trips out with trial and error...

Wait a minute, I was under the impression that the 2017 autowake system wouldn't work on the 2016s? This is the 1st person I have heard that has a 2016 with the 2017 autowake system on their boat.

I bought a '16 Craz and was upset when they announced the autowake for the next model year. Now that I understand what it does, I'm kind of glad I don't have to deal with it. It seems that if it was set up perfect from the factory, it might make setting up a surf wave easier for people who are new to the sport. The problem is, the factory doesn't generally install enough ballast for a real surf wake and all the modifications must throw off the autowake system, or it isn't set up well to begin with. Now that I've had my boat for a year and I understand what it takes to get a good wave on both sides, I can make adjustments in my sleep. But I'm not sure someone else could just take my boat out and get a stellar wave without loads of instructions or experience. For me, it has been fun to tinker with the wave and learn how to optimize it based on weight, speed, listing, surf plates, wake plate, etc... But I'm sure a lot of people just want to get in the boat and hit a button and have it turn out perfect.

You can change the ballast fill and empty times on the new autowake so it's not a big deal.

I have a 17 Helix with bone stock ballast and Auto wake is by far the best way to dial in my wave. Granted I just got it and I only have 20 hours on it but the auto wake feature is very impressive so far. Auto wake makes a beautiful looking wave but so far I need a big crew to go rope less for any period of time.
I'm curious to know if any of you who have the 1100 lbs upgrade in the rear are actually surfing rope less. Simply put I want to know if I go with this upgrade will it be enough to surf with a small crew or do I need to get weight under the seats as well.

I upgraded my Mojo surf edition to #1100s and use an extra #400 in the bow if there are only a few of us going out for the day. Most every brand doesn't include enough ballast so the dealers can upsale you. Axis and Malibu with plug and play, Nautique does it, Mastercraft...its just part of it I guess. You also need to list the boat slightly to the side of the rider and make certain you are running the correct speed compared to a GPS. Hope that helps
