View Full Version : Type of Car you drive = Type of Driver you are?

This is just for fun and based solely on my observations as I drive about 30,000 miles a year just between home and the office. All 30,000 miles have been within the state of Utah just outside SLC. This is not to offend anyone but just to have fun and see where it goes.
First off, I have no room to talk, I drive a Mercedes Benz and the Wife drives the Titan XD. We have owned over 20 vehicles including some listed below.
Toyota Trucks: Big or small, new or old, drivers just go fast and love to ride your rear even when doing 78 in a 65. Worse Toyota Truck was a punk kid with a BYU sticker on the window tried to run me off the road, I was passing a tanker doing 80 in a 65. Doesn't matter how big those balls are hanging from the hitch on the back there's got to be some compensating going on somewhere.
Toyota Prius: Stop focusing on growing that dam tree on the dash and just drive.
Mini Vans: three types here; the soccer mom, so focused on being a mom and the kids that driving is not a priority, even though she is driving. the dad and or soccer dad; the dad is focused on getting to their destination as fast as possible to get away from all the screaming kids, the soccer dad, is just trying to be cool while driving a mini van. And of course the teenage daughter/son who just got their license to drive...
VW's: Not sure on these ones, again they just go fast regardless of weather and road conditions.
Mazda: These drivers must be invincible, always going way faster than posted speeds even in snow covered roads. The Zoom Zoom tag line must be taken literally when signing the paperwork.
Luxury SUV's: Range Rover, Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac. My car cost me 100k or more, I'm so much better than you so I don't care how I drive, my blinkers don't work but that's your problem not mine. Oh I'm dressed to the nine to go shopping because I have to look the part to match my SUV.
Big Jacked up Trucks: putting big a$$ tires on the truck and didn't want to pay for speedometer re-calibration, you are all going slow while in fact I'm the one going way over the posted speed limit. Since I'm so much bigger than you get out of my way. Oh and those big expensive tires, don't really help much in snow and ice covered roads.
Now for a few generalizations: These may be specific to Utah but am sure they apply elsewhere.
-The stick figure family of Mom Dad and 10 plus kids on the back of a small hatchback, are they clowns?
-Tourists or as I like to refer to them as Bar Code cars (Rentals all have bar code stickers) I get to deal with Sundance Film Festival and people from all over the world coming to visit, Must stay as far away from Bar Code Cars as possible.
-Drivers scared of Highway Patrol, they're already doing at least 5 under, see a cop and slam on the brakes, now doing 15 under and never speeds back up.
-The Stuff Your Face while Driving Driver, be sure to use that plate to help keep it clean.
-Never learned how to use Cruise Control driver, speed fluctuates so much when passing they speed up, then they slow down, then they speed up, then they slow down.
Of those 30,000 miles during this past year, I have seen numerous accidents, roll overs, slide offs, deer/elk/moose collisions and have had my fair share of oh $h!t moments. Just trying to have fun with this as we head into the heavy travel season and we all start towing our boats.
I'm sure I left off many other types of vehicles and am sure you all have your own thoughts and ideas on each.
Let's be safe out there!

My vehicles just BEG for stereotypes, so I'll play!!!!
Audi S6 Avant:
I could have been practical and bought a Subaru, but my ego needed a Euro-Snob car with a V8 under the hood. And I feel that I am entitled to pass anyone and everyone because my snow driving prowess is unmatched and I NEED to get to the ski resort before you. If I don't get at least a couple middle fingers thrown at me on the drive up to the mountain, I'm not driving to my potential.
BMW M3:
I fully believe that the car's mantra of "Ultimate Driving Machine" means that I MUST be the Ultimate driver. And of course I am... I'm driving a track ready car on public roads. Sure there are other cars out there that are faster, But I'll tell you that I'd beat them in the corners. And since we have the reputation for being a**holes, I might as well drive like one.
Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R:
Yes, I'm on a sportbike and you are a mere mortal. I have super-human powers of acceleration and handling so the speed limits and double yellow no passing lines don't apply to me. You could try to bitch at me, but I won't be around long enough for you to get out the first word.
F150 Ecoboost with 6" lift and 35's:
{if I'm driving it} I don't consider myself a "bro-dozer" even though I've got all the same goodies. I know I'm a pavement princess that will never see an offroad trail, but I don't care. My wheels match my boat trailer and I've got the Moomba decal in my back window to make sure everyone knows that I think I have a badass tow rig.
{if the wife is driving it} I may only be 5'2 but that doesn't mean I can't drive a big truck. You should see me get into this in a skirt! I love the double takes I get when guys see a little woman climb out of a big truck. I would never admit to wanting a flashy vehicle, but now that I have one, I secretly love it. My husband keeps buying mods for my truck, which makes me laugh but I just enjoy them on his dime. I'm quite proud that it's MY truck and he drives those little euro cars.

So I never got into what type of driver am I. typically 7 over, 65 I go 72, 75 I go 82. Once the speed limit hits 80 I usually top out at 84. Does not mean I have not driven faster. I drive a Mercedes for a few reasons, it's a safe well built car, the 4Matic is awesome in the snow especially with Blizzaks, the V6 has enough get up and go but still get close to 30MPG, unless I have it in Sport mode which is all summer :).
Like trayson, the wife drives the big truck, she's only 5'1" so the diesel is huge, just wait until I add the 6" or maybe 4" lift with 35's. Of Course has the Supra sticker on the back window. She's heavy footed, but loves being able to pass everybody going up hill. As the truck is still new to us, only 2300 miles on it, I'm a little more old man like when I drive it, hoping that changes this weekend as we're taking it on a ski trip 4 hours away.
When I drive the car I feel I drive plenty fast enough, the truck I'm bigger than a lot of you so I'll drive however I feel like.

Work / tow vehicles
2500 HD black with tinted windows that I drive normally and no one notices. Have had too many close calls of people pulling out in front of me them any other vehicle I have owned or driven
Suburban charcoal family hauler with tinted windows looks like a unmarked government agent people see it and move out of my way
Current toy car
Chevy SS full size 4 door sedan with over 400 hp. I drive it like it's ment to be driven as does the wife. Nothing better than a sleeper sedan.
Wife's ride

In FL you can do anything you want in a newer white 4 door. Cops think you're old people and don't want to have to argue with a judge about it. Look the other way.

....the going stereotype would be that it is a brodozer-pavement queen. Shocker, I took it mudding when it still had paper plates, not only do I regularly play with it off-road....I've actually used the factory rear E-Locker. Truck is usually filthy unless I happen to have some free time to clean & detail.
The Mrs drive a 2009 Nissan Altima that other than leather, is fairly vanilla, except the fact that she drives like she's Dale Jr. There are few cars where I've actually held on to the passenger Oh shit handle, bless her heart, and her driving makes my butt pucker more than a face full of lemons!
....with the Craz on the way next week she's already put me on notice that the next new ride will be hers, likely a 2018 Expedition or Navigator.

Easy, I'll stereotype ya (as long as you take it all in good humor).
Regular truck: you're work in a blue collar job and aren't worried about anything too flashy (other than maybe some decals showing off your texas pride). The truck is functional and you're too busy with football to go for anything more flashy.
Expedition: The moment we found out we were due with our first kid, we immediately knew we needed a texas sized baby hauler. I mean, nothing screams "I need 7 passenger seating and a vehicle that can handle a crash with a semi truck" than knowing the first baby is on the way. screw all those minivan driving soccer moms, we are from Texas and need a big ass SUV. Plus, our baby is cuter than yours.

2014 Subaru Forester (replaced a Toyota Highlander, which replaced a Volvo sedan)
2012 Ram crew cab (which replaced a k2500 Suburban, which replaced a Volvo wagon)
The Highlander, Volvos, and Suburban were cars we owned while raising our boys, who are no grown men.
Suburban was our first tow vehicle.
My wife likes driving the Subaru, not so much the Ram
Never owned (or rented) a minivan. Promised myself I would never, ever been seen in one.
Between the ages of 16 and 30, I was a gearhead speed junkie. Then, I got a job as a trooper with the Illinois State Police.
Today, I keep to the right lane with cruise control set five under the posted limit, enjoying life in rural Virginia.

I think your stereotypes will vary by geography. Maybe by age group. But still, if the shoe fits...
We have my big ass truck and her luxury SUV - don't really count the kids cars anymore since I rarely see them with home just being a "pit stop." I drive pretty much anything at 5-10 over on the freeway, not so much around town. Both our vehicles are usually either really shiny and new looking sitting in the driveway (especially since we both work from home now) or have mud splattered up the sides and sand coming out when you open the doors from our last adventure. Is there a stereotype for that? ;)
But we do have 4 kids and now 2 grandkids in the mix and we're a tight family so we kind of fall into the we "need big ass stuff" no matter what it is category. Vacation rentals often end up being a mini van and I am reminded why we vowed to never own one.
I used to be curious if people judged but don't really give a damn anymore. I've pulled some serious junkers out of the boat launch and out of the sand when they ran into trouble with whatever vehicle I'm in, turned down any payment, and made sure they were good to go before tending to my own stuff. That's what really counts. Hope they'll do the same for me if/when the day comes.
I'm sure you all are the same - hopefully anyway!

I have a brand new ecoboost. Sure, I could have sprung and got one of the bad boy diesels, but I don't need to prove anything. I don't need to be the quarterback, everyone knows that I made the team. And I probably got more action "off the field" than the QB did anyway.
Highlander: I want something that has all the creature comforts and so much reliability that all we have to worry about is gas and oil. My ride isn't flashy, but it's got the power and comfort that keeps me happy. You certainly wouldn't catch me in a minivan and an Accord is too plain. Sure, I could have gotten a flashy sportscar, but I have a solid crew of career women I hang with and when we are at our girl's night happy hour we see those "flashy sportscar driving women" and just laugh because we know they're the poster child for "Trying too hard".
GTR: I could have an ordinary sportscar, but I was drawn to this one for the sheer genius that went into its design. Yeah, I've seen all the Fast and the Furious movies, but unlike you I don't play video games all day long and I don't live in my mom's basement and yes, I can afford this car. I didn't get it to be flashy, I got it because I could. It's basically a Ferrari but without the billboard of "Viagra midlife crisis rich guy" that comes with the Italian steed. When I show up at car shows, I'm surrounded by all the European sportscars, and they make a spot for me to park because honestly they can't find anything bad to say about my ride.

F150 is spot on.
Highlander is mostly spot on...It's the kid-hauler for the wife.
GTR is about 75% spot on. There are no cars and coffee around me that I know of. I definitely got it for the engineering marvel that it still is, IMO. Also needed to be able to haul the boys around, as they're huge car-nuts. I don't play video games and I've seen all but maybe the last 2 Fast and Furious movies.

Wife drives a 12 VW Passatt TDI SEL, leased it originally to see if we liked it, love it, bought it out of the lease. We got it because she drives 20K a year to work normally. Now with the VW emissions scandal we got a nice fat I'm sorry check from VW and that finished paying it off.
I drive a 14 Ram Cummins quad cab long bed 4x4. No lift, no fancy wheels and tires. Some have even called it a grandpa truck with the camper shell.
I have owned 4 other trucks in the last 8 years and by the time this one came it was form and function.
Tow the boat, haul all my gear to and from the lakes.
Now I live on the lake, so I don't tow, and I don't haul the gear lol.
But having it more then half paid for I can't see getting another one, same as the Mojo.

Hmmm... Not a ton of crazy stereotypes explode with either of those vehicles. That's going to be tougher. Here's my best try...
Honda CRV: I've always loved Hondas and that "Honda reliability" has alway brought a smile to my face. I wanted something that felt more adventureous than the typical sedan. I definitely wasn't willing to go the minivan. So the "cute-yute" baby SUV is perfect for me.
Ram: Everyone has a Ford, and I grew up loving muscle cars, so getting a Ram Hemi just felt right. It's white and stock, so I definitely fly under the radar, which is good. I'm not the type to beg for attention, but I will break out that satisfying smile when I hear the exhaust come to life if I give the hemi some gas.

Pretty boring drives for me.
2014 F150 with a 5L. Wanted a new truck for less than $30K. I live 1.5 miles from home to work so I put on very few miles. A turboboost was an additional $4K and at 5,000 a year going from 18-20 mpg would take 57.5 years to break even. I run my trucks into the ground so no matter what I have they will have very little value left.
I have a 2007 Wrangler soft top I bought in 2010 when the economy was bad and SUVs were getting a bad name. It had 17,000 miles and I got it for $13,900. It was completely a street ride so I changed out bumpers, added a winch and skid plates, fenders, modest lift, wheels and tires, lockers, stereo, subwoofer and programming chip. I've been to Moab three times with it and I leave the doors and top off in the summer. My Polaris RZR cost more than the Jeep did. I put on 3,000 miles a year. Great toy and I feel more within my comfort zone being in the Wrangler than being in a sports car.
I drive within 5mph of the speed limit.

Not sure if yours is an Ecoboost or not, but there's so many new F150's it's hard to get too much of a stereotype on them cause EVERYONE drives one!

Toys 1952 ford F-1 with original flathead v8 dualed exuast to make it sound mean but only has 90 Hp
1948 ford coupe. Chopped top, custom front end. Flat black with metalic red scallops and hand brushed pin striping. 327 chevy engine with Muncie 4 speed.
Some days I drive slow, some days I burn rubber.
I would say I am a blue collar worker that has been stuck in a mid life crises every day of my life.
work hard and play harder.
I love this. I had a mid 20's crisis, a mid 30's crisis, a mid 40's crisis... I'm right there with ya!

I'm on both ends of the spectrum on what I drive. My daily is a 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring. My wife drives a 2016 Honda Odyssey Touring. My father in law sold Honda's, so we've always received great discounts on our cars. We each got new cars before he retired to use the discount one last time. Prior to my Hybrid, I drove a 2006 Accord; my wife drove a 2005 Pilot.
On the flip side, I also have a 1994 Toyota Supra Turbo that puts down almost 700hp to the wheels. I like to say it cancels out my Hybrid, but I just don't drive it as much as I used to these days.
If it weren't for my commute length and gas mileage, I'd drive a truck. I just can't argue with averaging over 50mpgs on my daily car.

Since childhood I have been fond of German and Japanese cars. Germany - it's quality, reliability, confidence in any road, and Japan - shocking, self-expression, smooth lines, unique interior and unusual exterior. It's not strange that I bought a Volkswagen Tiguan. I used to go by my husband's car - Nissan Murano. Both cars are perfect in driving, and safety modes allow me to drive on roads like a racer!
