Hey guys I am thinking about tinting the windshield on our Mojo. I am up in the air as to 5% or 20% we do boat at night a couple times a year so I'm leaning towards 20%. Who has pictures, advice, etc.

I went 20 and am pretty pleased. Here are some of mine

I'm on the fence too. I was thinking 20% or 35%. I know I've had 20% on the front windows of a car and it was a headache to see at night.

We have 18% & I love it!!!! If you drive at night then use the booster seat like a man & quit bitchin haha

5% all the way and never look back! Mine had 20% when we got it and I had it removed. 20% still let so much light thru and at certain angles didn't even look tinted.

I tried to find some good pics from before and after, but all I have is before. I should take some next time we go out at the same angle since this comes up a decent amount.

It will look great with 5%, no doubt. I've had 3 boats done and my tinter does it with glass off of the boat. He removes the trim pieces and gets down to bare glass so each piece is tinted all the way to the edge with no light gaps. I've seen a handful that have been tinted while on and the light gaps around the edges either showed to much for my liking, or were covered with a strip of black vinyl where glass meets trim to hide it.

Removing the glass is not a difficult job, the worst part is fitting all the pieces into the back of the car!

No way. Did you see Dusty's boat sitting at marina?!?! The black windshield makes the rest of the black POP.

I've had the same tint guy do a couple boats for me. He does not take the glass off. It is a tricky job so it's probably ideal to find someone who has some experience doing curved glass.

I was leaning towards 20% for my SA, but now thinking 5% might be the way to go since I have some black on my boat as well.

With a car tint goes on the inside of the glass, does it really matter if its on the inside or outside on a boat? Thoughts?

I think you are asking for trouble with the film down the road if you put it on the outside.

Sounds like you removed the glass yourself. Anything to watch out for when removing and reinstalling the glass?

dusty2221
03-02-2017, 07:36 PM
Before you remove it, take photos of where the windshield supports attached and the position they are in. After you pull the Rubber seal out to expose the screws it's as easy as just removing them, each main panel will have one bolt with a nut that you have to access from underneath. You can typically tell which one this is because it has a slightly larger head.

Once it is all unscrewed the glass lifts right off of the boat. I have found that it goes back on the boat better if you have not had to move or reposition the boat / trailer at all. And even then it just takes a little bit of time to get the center glass alignment back.

When I take them to my tinter, he drills out the rivets and removes the metal trim and the rubber trim, tints it, then reassembles everything with stainless rivets and you can't ever tell it was taken apart

On the LSV I took the windshield apart, and just gave them the glass. The tint was perfect, but the windshield never looked as good around the rubber seals as before it was taken apart.

On the Mojo I took the windshield off the boat, but didn't take it apart. I have a small 1/8-1/4 gap around the inside of the windshield that I cover with black 3m tape. The tint looks just as good otherwise and the seals all look original.

The nice thing as the years have gone by the tint gets scratched, there is a couple really small defects showing up, with it not being extended to the seals its much easier to remove and re-tint. Just a thought.

I've got the tinter coming tomorrow and I'll see what his thoughts are on the windshield. I really don't want to have to pull the glass but if I do I think I'll leave it in the frame and use some 3m strip tape to cover the edge. Mike did you do the inside or outside with the strip tape?

Noodle15
03-03-2017, 06:49 PM
We did 5% on our Mondo its actually 2016 Mondo Surf Edition for Sale in the classified section. We tinted the inside then they used a tint tap for the edges cant even tell its there. I personally like the dark windows for the look it gives the boat. Have to think if your driving at night or the day I seem to always sit a little able the windshield. Good luck

Outside, it's easier to make it all look even. You honestly don't even notice it when it's done right. It almost looks factory framing the Windows.

There really is no visible difference between 20%, 18% and 15%. The major visual difference in film will be 35 to 15 to 5%. Warning is that 5% you cannot see out of at night at all. 15-20% is hard to see out of also. On the Moomba's you can take the glass out or do it on the boat, with way more work to keep it from light gapping. We have the Supra and Moomba's on lock for a clean and gap free tint using only nano ceramic films. A lot of tint shops won't be able to handle the compound curves on the Supra windshields so be careful who you choose would be advice. Here are some pics. 253522535325354
