View Full Version : Towing with Rock Guard / Mud Flaps

I have an F-250 Super Duty running 35x12.50 R 20s and I cringe at the thought of throwing a rock at my soon to be delivered Craz.

Does anyone on oversized tires tow with something like this?

The offset on my wheels means a bit of meat sticks out on the sides so I'm entertaining the idea of something like this that easily comes off and on.

I realize they are kinda gay looking but considered what'll be behind me I may just deal with the goofy look if they work.

TIA

I built my own version of those. Agreed they are hideous, but chips on the hull are worse!

The other alternative I have seen is a bra that goes over the bow protecting the hull. Take your choice bra or mud flaps. Why do I always think of Spinal Tap when mud flaps come up?

Thanks! I'll need to fab one up soon! Looking at your bumper, seems to keep you from rolling coal on your boat too ;)

It sure does, but I have to make sure and clean it off after any type of a long trip so it doesn't stain the bumper.

I'll be ordering Rock Tamers this year unless Dusty mocks me up a new version of flaps :).

I agree they are ugly but I'll def be using them. Same setup as you RC.

I use them as well. The worst part is when I drop the boat off for a service and have to drive home with them on without the boat. But they do protect the boat!

Haha, I'm bad about leaving them on from the first time we go to the lake until the end of summer.

I use them. Only wish I had started using them earlier. Well worth it!

But they are ugly. Would you only use them if you have larger tires? Do the stock mud flaps do any good? I like the Idea of a Bow Bra, any links to a good supplier?

I have them and they've worked very well. Running with large mud tires makes them almost a necessity. Just buy 2 hitches if you want to swap back and forth easily.

Also built my own. Stainless tubing, stainless hardware, and forklift mud flaps from Grainger. Into it for about $65 total.

I also made my own. Aluminum angle with stainless hardware and semi truck mud flaps turned sideways. The nuts/bolts in stainless cose the most! I have since painted the lower metal piece black.

I also have the Rock Tammers. They are a absolute must for towing a boat with bigger tires. I have hade mine for 3 years and they had held up very well. To me they don't look that bad with out the trailer. Mine go on first boat outing and stay on tell the boat gets winterized.

I use the Rock Tamers you pictured, I actually think they look pretty tuff on the rig, and it lets people know you actually use the truck for something other then you want to drive a big ass diesel LOL.

In GA I keep mine on all year with the big hitch, already had the Vette totaled from someone rear ending it, then someone backed into Claudia's car and caused the paint to wrinkle a bit.

A month after the Vette got rear ended on my way to work another young girl rear ended the truck. Luckily I had the hitch on it. She now has a big hole in her bumper.

People in GA are always in a rush to get to where they are going, tailgate like no bodies business and aren't real good at using the brakes LOL.

I thought in GA it would be more laid back. Get rid of that target bumper sticker on the back of your cars!

You would think that, but in GA everyone is laid back and generally nice until they get in there cars.

Already over 200 deaths on GA highways this year. Was 1400+ last year

I have also used the Towtector for years. It has done a fantastic job of protecting my boat.

Big thanks to everyone for the input, I deal with enough redneck wisecracks to fab my own setup...with all the adjustability, I ended up snagging a set of Rock Tamers off Amazon.
