Seen several mentions of sub placement, sub box setup, etc floating around in different threads.

In an effort to pull together the options different people are using, post up pics and details of your install.

My boat went to Earmark Marine for the sub install because I was looking for a properly ported box, which was just out of dusty and my knowledge base.

Ported box, built to spec, for Wetsounds XXX. Since we used the factory facade for the amp rack, a new one was made out of starboard and attached to the front of the box. We did not go back with carpet.

I got mine on sale for about $130. I figure it's tuned for that subwoofer and looks better than the kits boxes you can buy from Walmart etc, so why not. My buddy has the same woofer, but previous generation, in a generic "truck box" of roughly the same size in his LSV and it sounds great!

I love the sub. I have it mated to a jl audio 500/1 and sounds great. I don't need anymore than that since I always have my critters out and tune most of the noise to the tower anyways

Currently in process of making custom box for a KM10. Shallow mount truck boxes didn't offer enough volume and I wanted to stay away from COTS box that were too deep, taking away feet space, or wouldn't hold up to marine enviro. For those who have made their own, and went with another option than carpet, what were the choices? I've got initial thoughts about a DIY Rhino lining or similar.

3/4 mdf box that I rhino lined myself and then carpeted. I put 1" worth of acrylic runners on each end on the bottom to lift the box off the floor should any water pool under it. did the same in the supra and 5 years later no issues. thinking I'll get the same out of this box. cut a panel to fit on the front and screwed it to the front of the box after carpeting it. grill was a few weeks later. made a removable panel to hide all the wiring behind but it wasn't installed yet.

First thing done was to add short feet to the bottom of the floor to keep it level. The hump, which is getting cut off, supports the back of the floor. A level and sandpaper were used to make everything level front to back.

Next thing was to cut off the hump.

Designed and built the box using size suggested by Exile. Used 3/4 Birch plywood, glue, screws, and staples. Routered all the edges.

Used several coats of oil based paint inside and out and finished off with clear coat. Added carpet and electrical. Finished off with starboard feet to keep moisture from wicking up the carpet.

The box slid in and dropped in place behind the floor. Both sides were trimmed to match the contour of the hull and walkway wall.

So I've seen the gamut on here from 4 10's to a single 12 or 15....I realize acoustics in an open air environment are different than in a car or pickup but can anyone comment on SPL?

I would imagine that smaller but more drivers are pushing more air & sound "tighter" musically whereas the single big dog hits "harder"....is that the case? I also realize free air vs sealed vs ported (tube/slot) all add another variable in frequency response.

....curious basshead here.

mmandley
03-03-2017, 09:38 AM
I tend to find myself turning the sub down more then up lol. At a certain point I worry about my dash electronics, this sub hit so hard its sending water ripples out around the boat, when surfing there is no issue hearing and feeling the bass from this size sub.

When I has the 12, it was a prototype that is now the official Big 12 of Exile and it hit really hard as well but on no level compared to the 15.

I have had to go back and put nylon lock nuts on every bolt in my dash, as I would randomly find bolts laying on the carpet.

I am sure 4 10s, 2 12s, have a more solid punch though, it kind of depends on your preference in how the bass sounds I think. I really like the sound of the 15, but in my truck I have a 10 and it punches really hard and makes it seem a little larger then it is.

Surface area rules. So two 10's would have greater output than a single 12 and could absolutely hit "harder" if thats the term you want to use. However, a larger woofer will have deeper bass extension than any number of smaller woofers. I think this is where you might be getting the "tighter" effect, narrower band width. Further, a single 12 in a ported enclosure would require a smaller enclosure than two 10's in a sealed, and have greater output and deeper bass. A ported 12" could also have greater output than a sealed 15" and again, might require a smaller enclosure. But, the larger woofer would have deeper bass extension.

It would be very easy to build an SPL setup in a boat much like a car, that would rattle your teeth out. Right enclosure and right amp and tuning, and you're there. It would likely be a one note wonder, but if you are out for an SPL jackhammer, you dont care about SQ.

This doesnt even get into wattage and excursion, the other two factors effecting output.

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I'm not looking to do a DB Drag or anything like that....just wanting to have a setup that is tight and punchy for something technical (hard rock - double bass pedals) yet still have the excursion capability to hit the low lows (trap, dubstep)

This is the box I am putting under the helm,of my Craz. Test fitted it and it's going to work out perfect

Please let me know how this works out and sounds! I'm looking for a cheap and easy sub to add to my obv this spring. Thanks!

I have a pair of Infinity Reference 1060W 10" subs. they are single voice coil 4ohms, so 2 ohm load to the PPI 1000.1 amp.
Subs have the frosted 3/8" tubing with blue LED strips inside them (1 led per CM so a more uniform look to the rings). I kept the polk speaker grills and have LED angel eye rings illuminating the cones of the subs.

The box is mounted to the stock footrest on my 2008 XLV, so I'm on the low end for airspace (it's the shape of a wedge) but I will be compensating the next time I open it up with some polyfill.

I REALLY like the dual side-by-side W7s on the silver/red baffle in the Moomba! Hertz me just lookin' at it. I like the symmetry (same orientation, same plane) better than one under-dash and one in the pass-thru. Plus, I like all subwoofers originating from within the confines of the cockpit. But not sure how all that enclosure fit. Great job.

Also, a single JL Audio 13W7 driven by an HD750/1 per each voice coil is a bad hombre. Will separate the marrow from the bone.

Thanks, the mojo has significantly more room under the dash than any other boat I've seen. If you are willing to relocate the heater you could hide a large body under there.

I have a 2017 craz just purchased two weeks ago. Adding a sub and having a custom box made and installed under the helm. Have appointment on the 28th of June. I’ll post pics when I pick her up.

It doesn’t look bad. But for what I paid for it I was expecting more. They took a standard box and screwed a plate on it that they contoured to the left side. They explained didn’t want face plate to go all the way across and cover half the storage in front of cup holder.

Have as close a possible sized ported box behind the face plate, would still like to tweak with the box size and get a little more cubic feet out of it, but for 300w sub, sounds freaking good. Did a Jl system in my buddies safe boat, did the jl M12IB6 ran infinite baffle and that thing sounds amazing.

It would be very easy to build an SPL setup in a boat much like a car, that would rattle your teeth out. Right enclosure and right amp and tuning, and you're there. It would likely be a one note wonder, but if you are out for an SPL jackhammer, you dont care about SQ.
