Got it. what angle is that?
When I first looked at the pic, I thought it was 90', but it's not.

Looks good - a lot better then my 3/4" cutting board with the jig saw. I also took a file to it.

Thanks! The angle is 100 degrees. I tried everything after 90 and 100-110 was best on my boat and the one other I had access to. Once I was happy with the design (and got tired of cutting them with my saws) I found a guy to use a CNC router to make the cuts super smooth and finished. It even rounds the edges. Then he puts the blanks in a jig and another machine drills and countersinks the hole locations.

Let me know if you want to lead off next month's order!

Hopefully others will chime in, but yes these make a huge difference on a DD. Regardless of what style you build or buy, I think you will be very happy with the improvement in your wave.

There are some threads here or the Supra site.
They work on DD boats. I know an owner of an older Supra that uses one and sells them.

Understood! The LSV has a good wave listing, just not the kind of deep pocket you can get with the gate. The bigger selling points IMO are not having to list the boat to the rub rail to surf, and the quicker switch from side to side and to wakeboarding and back to surfing.

kaneboats
03-20-2017, 09:20 AM
David, I never surf without my (homemade) gate anymore. Especially now that my youngest daughter surfs all the time -- somehow I messed up raising her and she's goofy. So easy to switch over now and good surf wave on both sides. It is a must for your LSV and Dan's product is well worth it.

Do you end up going equal max rear ballast with the surfgate or more like 100% surfside and 75% non-surfside? And I assume that you want a full IBS as well, no? What's your optimal set up?

If brian_rinse is not selling them, there was also a guy on the Supra forum making and selling them. Probably a thread over there on the subject???

I contacted him last season via email and he sent me his phone number. He sold a bunch of them. I have his contact info in anyone needs one ASAP, he might have them. Send me a PM and I will try to find the old email with his cell number.

I think he called them Surf Plates, but it was the same design. He tested them a 3-4 different makes. Direct drives and V-drives.

I did not buy one b/c I made one for my boat.
If I did it all over again, I would have just bought one for $150-$200

I bet having t as far rearward also helps reduce the spray.

There may be a "best" way to deploy it but I don't know that there is a "wrong" way. I have the plate to the front and can stick it pretty far back. I don't have a spray problem b/c it is far enough aft. If I had trouble placing it far enough to the rear or if I encountered a spray problem I would not hesitate to reverse it and give that a shot.

Just a friendly reminder to tether your gates to a buoy. They stick like they're screwed to the hull, but sometimes stuff happens and they sink fast. I don't suggest tethering to the boat itself due to recoil risk.

The metal handles do have springs that rust right away, but I'm not sure how long it will take before it's an issue.

The seastow handles have stainless springs. I won't talk you out of buying one of mine, but if you just want some improved springs you can pick up a shower handle suction cup from Home Depot that looks like the seastow style and take the springs to use in your current gate.

At the risk of over-inflating Brain's ego, I wanted to share my experience with his awesome suck gate this past weekend.

We were up at the lake over Memorial Day weekend and this thing works GREAT on our '14 LSV. It was just my wife and one of my sons (the other 2 boys couldn't make it up) so we had fewer bodies in the boat than we usually do. Bottom line is that the suck gate gave me both a taller and a longer wave, even without all the ballast. We normally go surfside 100% at 900lbs, non-surfside at 50%, hard tank 100% at 500lbs and IBS 100% at 500lbs, an extra 650lbs sac under the surfside seat plus the manual Flow at position #2 or #3. But with the suck gate I was able to forgo the extra 650lbs sac and I didn't even use the Flow and I still had a better wave. I also found that I was able to increase the speed a bit. Because the water was still pretty chilly up in the North Woods (58 degrees ) and I only had my shorty wetsuit, I didn't spend a lot of time messing around with different settings, but I'll tweak a few additional settings when we are back up in a few weeks to really dial in the wave.

I have to say that I wish I had bought one of these 2 years ago as the increased wave is significant on our '14 LSV! If you're on the fence about picking one of these up, I would highly recommend it as it's a lot cheaper and easier than adding more bags! My only suggestion is to make sure that you attach a line to the suck gate and clip it either to the cleat or the rear eye above the swim platform in case it slips out of your hand when you're attaching/detaching it from the side of the boat. It would be a cryin' shame to drop this thing to the bottom of the lake as I don't think this thing floats :p

kaneboats
06-01-2017, 11:32 AM
Put a buoy on it. If you tie it to the cleat it may bounce into the boat or get drawn under into your prop. With the buoy it will be right there where it came off.

Got to try ours out last weekend on our direct drive LS. Instant improvement in the wake. Before we had a short, steep wash, now it's much longer and clean.

We're only running the stock 400lbs in the rear with about 350lbs of people weight on the back bench, boat not listed. My son who is around 150lbs can go ropeless easily on any board. i'm over the 200 mark and am still not quite fast enough, even on a Gnarwhal. Next mod will be another 400-600lbs of weight somewhere.

I've found the suck gate sticks like it's glued on only if the hull is perfectly clean. If our boat is parked for more than a few hours on our lake, a thin film of slime starts to develop (not enough to see it, but it's there). Scrubbing good with a bare hand is enough to get it clean to secure the gate.

Thanks again, Dan!

Good tip, especially for vacation week at the lake!

And one more related tip: it's possible to get it stuck on so well that the release tabs don't want to budge. When this happens, I just slide it down the hull until it reaches the crease or curve in the hull, then it comes right off.

Well, I haven't had that problem but will certainly remember if I do.

Everyone that sent payment has one arriving in the next day or two of you haven't already gotten it.

Still working on parts for the next round. I'll post up here first.

I found a solution for flotation. I bought 2 knock off GoPro orange floaty's on Amazon. I may add a 3rd floaty but it floats on the pool.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170613/904be3db7205a607c4cedcfaf01b6cb6.jpg

Quick reply to Brian that this has worked out fairly well for us.

There is definitely an art in getting it to suction on efficiently. It takes us 1-5 times before it finally sticks and we can't figure out what we're doing different when it does finally stick. Anyone with additional advice beyond scrubbing the hull to remove lake film and ensuring it isn't on a lip of any kind would be good to hear from. Just seems like sometimes it goes on first shot, and next time it can take upto 6 tries.

used it first time this past weekend and yes it makes a difference. really didn't put much ballast in in as it was later in the evening, but it sur did clean the wake up and made it much steeper in my opinion. 2 guys in the boat and maybe 400 lbs surf side and 100 non surf and it looked like i was sacked out.......it came off a few times , had a rope tied so didn't lose it , but thats when you could tell the difference. I like it , and 2 thumbs up

Something is up with the cups on a few of the newer handles. These things should not be falling off. I have a few handles that have shiny cups and do not stick like the others. I'm working on a fix and will report back soon.

Sorry if this has been discussed as I have not read the entire thread.

A friend has built several versions of this over the last couple of seasons and he brought it with him on my boat last weekend. It took a lot of try's to get it to stick on my boat. He said that it most likely had to do with the amount of wax on the hull. I have no idea if this is the cause but it sounds reasonable.

The mfg changed the cup chemistry so I will have to redesign around a different handle. Might be able to produce a few more with new old stock inventory.

I'm just disappointed that it's not working well for you. It made such a difference for me and I love seeing all the great waves. PM me your address soon and I'll can get you new cups by Wednesday at no cost. I'll walk you through making the swap as well.

Dan, I pretty sure mine had same bad cups! !!!
after trying several different times to get gate to stick, it always falls off. 1st time boat is dry, it's ok.

Sorry to hear about some guys having issues. I'm in the middle of moving so quickest way to get back out there will be to pick up this handle at Home Depot and swap the cups. There are some similar options on Amazon as well. I'll reimburse you for the cost of the new handle.

For anyone having problems with the gate coming off - make sure you do not get any suntan lotion on the suction cups. Even just touching the cups hours after applying lotion can cause problems, which can happen when switching sides trying to peal off the cups. A month ago we switched sides 3-4 times successfully, then tried unsuccessfully 4 times to get the gate to stay put - finally giving up for the day. Prior to the next trip out I washed the cups with dish soap and cleaned the boat side. I made sure to washed my hands after suntan lotion, then made sure no one touched the cup face. We have not had any issues since. Happy surfing.

I recommend finding a way to attach the wake shaper to the rear eye on the boat. Just be sure to do it in a way that the recoil action doesn't land it into the boat.

We lost ours this weekend on a small but busy lake. By the time we noticed it was no longer attached to the boat, it was long gone. It was attached to a fender buoy. Problem: mine was white, like every other buoy out there. Should have used yellow or orange. We had to look closely at every dock and raft, but still no luck. Never found either the shaper or the buoy. Either a prop got the buoy and the whole thing sank or someone found it and kept it.

Figured it out, they are held on with pins, easy swap.
