View Full Version : Trailer hub is missing the cap and oil/grease is everywhere

Obviously this isn't right. Not sure what happened. If one of you can let me know what I need to do to fix this, it'd be appreciated.

I have the Vault maintenance free hubs:

one is missing a cap and grease is all over.

I definitely lost the cap.

I have no idea how it happened though.

That grease gets hot and creates more pressure and pushes them out. Go get a new cap (bearing buddy). And then pull your bearings out and repack them. You could probably get away with putting the new cap on and pumping it up with a few squirts from a grease gun. But if it was mine I would actually pack them and put them back in. Then install the new cap and put a couple pumps in it and it should be good

No idea how long I've been rolling with them like this, as we just finished a road trip. It could be 8 hours or 8 minutes. No way to know.

You lost the waterproof integrity of the cover and it was susceptible to dirt intrusion without the cover. Bearings need to checked and repacked periodically so this would be a good time to do that.
