We were out trying to figure out the wake configuration on my 08 lsv. I noticed what felt like transmission slipping or cavitation when we had boat loaded with people, ballast, etc. Bow was rising pretty high and wondered if these v drives can cavitate?

yes, you can experience cavitation when loaded & listed. it would be less likely that the transmission is slipping.

This has happened to my LSV a couple of times this summer. Felt like cavitation, like a quick slipping of the prop. It's always happened when we are surfing with the boat listing to port side. I too thought my transmission might be slipping since this is the first summer I've experienced it. Also have more ballast this year, possibly contributing to the prop slip.

Thanks Guys. I feel much better knowing this is most likely cavitation and not something mechanical.

Get a suck gate and you'll have a better wave and no more cavitation!

What is a suck gate? Sorry, I'm an amature at this

Thanks Dan. Since you have the same boat as me, do you have a picture of the one you use? That thread is amazing

Thanks guys. Is that the sea tow handled from west marine? After reading all the threads about the suck gate, that plastic one seems better as no rust on springs. Is that 1/2 plastic or 3/4". Going to order all my parts tomorrow.

Yes West marine and 1/2" hdpe

The cavitation went away with the suck gate. I only have stock 400's for my ballast but a big difference. Still need to play around with positioning of the gate, wake plate etc. Cant seem to post pictures but thanks for the help!

how different is the suck gate vs ghetto gate? I built a ghetto gate for like $5 and it made a pretty sizable difference in wake shape. Wondering if this suck gate would improve any more?

I think the suck gate is better and you can run the boat a lot closer to level. It's much smaller too. Way easier to drive the boat.

that is kind of confusing to me since the ghetto gate sits as low, maybe even lower as you can run the profile of the board all the way to the bottom of the hull with ease and size is the same. My ghetto gate doesn't stick out much and I have seen ones that run flat to the boat so that shouldn't affect driving that much....
