Sooo...I got a demo Doomswell 4'6" nubstep out today. I should preface that before riding this my last countless rides have been on my Daniello Diamond which I love. I have just been wanting to try to pop some airs and skim boards aren't exactly dialed in for that.
My first thoughts on getting up on the nubstep was how much thicker the board felt under my feet (for obvious reason....it's more than twice as thick). That definitely took some getting used to. After I got the feel from the added tracking and grip of it I was able to play more. I did 3x20 min sets on it and by the 3rd was way more comfortable than the first. I almost got a 360 on my first attempt and can say the board is really fast.
The thing is that it didn't knock my socks off like I was expecting based on reputation. I definitely attribute a large part to me being pretty one dimensional mostly riding the skim, but I didn't get off of it and go "wow!" Like the first time I rode my diamond. Does this mean it's not the best board for me or am I gonna have this experience until I really get rolling with surf style riding? I'm not looking to ditch my diamond, I just want 2 boards in my quiver for me that cater to 2 different styles. The Doomswell is just a lot of cash for something I didn't feel was amazing. I know the argument of soulcraft vs. Doomswell vs. This and that. Shouldn't I have gotten off this board and been like "hell ya!" ? I jumped on my diamond at the end and immediately was carving harder and just a lot smoother but again I have so much more ride time on that board. Thoughts??

I also have a ronix thruster that I don't love and have friends play on as they wish too so I've riden stuff other than skimmers too.

I haven't rode a Doomswell but I have been out on a few surf boards and 100% feel the same way as you. I just got in today after giving a custom surf board (which apparently was very fast) a good hour and it was pretty good but definitely was not impressed. I jumped back on my P5 Matrix and it was like going from a SUV to a sports car. I am in the same situation ... I want to work on airs and spins and was hoping to get dialled in with a good surf board ... but any that I have tried have all been underwhelming. Was looking at a Soulcraft but hard to drop the cash when every surf style board that I have rode prior to that have been a struggle.

Starting to think it might be the same situation ... could we just be geared to riding a skim and nothing else?!?!

Ok that makes me feel a lot better! Guess this is why they have 2 divisions at competitions, surf style doesn't tromp skim. I was just wanting to be a bit more diverse and I got some good riding in on the Doomswell but wasn't in awww like I thought I would be.

What fin configuration were u running? I tried all 3 ... then just the 2 outer ... then 1 middle. Having the 2 fins on the outside definitely had the most speed. I believe they were 3" fins so they were pretty beefy. The wind picked up just as I had dropped down the 2" fins so I won't be able to give it another shot until tomorrow.

The nubstep doesn't have a center find option. Just able to run as a twin or quad and I opted for twin because I wanted a little looser. For me, the big hang up was how darn thick it was. Even being crazy light it was still a lot more board to swing around

I think some of us that have jumped on a doomswell and been super stoked honestly aren't quite at the level of rider that you are. That could be some of it. I'm not doing airs and spins, but I'm very comfortable carving and slashing around on my board. Like yourself I run just the two big outside fins.

And if you can imagine coming from a 5' ronix koal to a doomswell nubstep, than yeah, you can imagine I'd have been wow'd.

Yep same here. This one doesn't even fit in the surf rack ... and my P5 Matrix will fit in the wakeboard slat it is so thin. I'm gonna give it a few runs today and see but I think I'll be a skimmer for life.

Might wanna look at the sweet spot (IS). That board was sure a wow to me when I rode it. Although I never did buy it (overpriced).

Can I ask first why the nubstep and not the neo? The neo is a their true surf style board. If you are proficient in skim and want to learn surf don't get a hybrid.

If doomswell is your board of choice ride a standard neo. See if you have a similar experiance. If so and you are set on DW contact Brock and tell him you want to reduce the volume. Change max thickness to no more then 1.75". If it's the 4'-6 try to get total volume down to 20ish L. They can also create a lower boxier rail. That will give you a more rider to water connected feeling like on your skimmer. Sounds like you are an advanced rider and you don't want to feel like you are standing on a log in the water.

Option 2 buy from different shaper.

I called and asked Brock and he suggested I try the nubstep and the guy I hooked up with didn't have a neo to loan. My attraction to doomswell was price balanced with reputation. 675 is a really great price for a hand shaped board. My worry about having him (or anyone) do what you ask is what if I still don't like it after one is custom made for me? I'm finding myself wondering if I just prefer skim style riding or what. By the idea of a thinner board like you mention is pretty interesting! By my 3 set on the board I was like it a lot more but didn't feel the explosiveness that both he and the rep said it should have but again I think it's probably more my ride style

Now that you have had some ride time on the nubstep give Brock a call back. Tell him what you liked and what you didn't like. Tell him how you ride and how you picture yourself riding a surf style board. No one will know their boards better then the shapers. The other critical and complicated component on a surf stay board is fins. The fins play a major role in how the board rides compared to a skimmer. See if you can find a proficient surf style rider in your area. Even better if he/she rides a DW. Go out see how they ride.

If you do all of the above and order a custom from DW and still don't like it I'm 100% sure you will be able to sell here on forum for min. loss. Just don't get any crazy graphics. Or maybe get a Star Wars themed board to increase the chances of selling if you don't like.

That is some super sound advice, thanks! The guy that is a rep invited me out next week so maybe I'll go play on his se550 and get some knowledge from him. Sucks because everyone I know around here talks about skim like it's inferior. Almost like I want to switch due to a complex lol

Keep in mind that you are riding one of the best skim boards ever made with the DD. If you had come from a Broadcast the WOW factor would have been there, I'm sure. That said, I am with you guys. I haven't ridden a Soulcraft board but I have ridden Russ's Doomswell board (neo, I think) and really enjoyed it. But, I have ridden skim for so long the board thickness of the surf style ones feels strange. Wouldn't trade my DD for anything else but would love to add a good surf style board at some point even though I'll have to start all over learning to ride it.

Surf is def my style of choice. But to say it requires more skill or a better rider, I say BS. It's just a different type or ride. If you like skim stick with it. Theses same guys can make custom skimmers. Shapes and weights that will get you blasting of the lip just as high as the surf style riders.

I say learn to enjoy both and get the best boards for each.

Option 3 - sign up for southern surfest try all the top boards and spend 2 days talking to the other riders and make the decision then. Awesome event awesome people.

I dont think I can hit southern surf fest but would definitely like to get some more time playing on a few surf boards. I'm gonna give it a few goes and then decide if I want to just stay skim I think.
