View Full Version : Testing ballast pumps out of the water

Got a question, my ballast pumps don't seem to be working correctly, while on the water I turn them on and nothing seems to fill. All thru hulls are open. I can turn them on while in the garage and hear them run, even drain out some water. Curious as to how I can test without burning up impellers while off the water? All reversible pumps.

I've run on drain by dipping hose in bucket of water.

So just an update. Took the boat to the ramp and just backed truck in enough for the intakes to be in the water. Since I know the pumps run, I turned everything on and waited. It took forever for the bags to even reach 1/3 full. IBS never started filling. From what I understand under each rear locker is a hard tank, those fill first and then bags start filling off same pump. The same for the IBS, under floor hard tank fills first then IBS will start filling.
How long should I set the timers for? At 15 minutes still not filling close to full. Seemed to drain faster than fill.

I bet your impellers are toast. Have you pulled them out to look at them?

Order yourself a new set of impellers. Pretty sure your splines are toast and it's just spinning in there.

Get a fake a lake or make one and you can test fill at home.

impellers are brand new. I have a fake a lake, actual lake is only 8 minutes away so I didn't want any false results with the water pressure coming from the hose.
