View Full Version : Windshield Tint?

What's the consensus on tinting the windshield? I know it would help the looks but does it hurt drivability?

I reckon it hurts visibility at night but in the day time there is plenty of ambient light.

With the windshield being as curved as it is .... I'm not typically looking through it. I was looking at the Driver Seat Riser thread and thinking about going ahead and ordering it, for that reason.

JHutch

Does the windshield have to come out because of the curve?

KG's Supra24
05-13-2016, 11:24 AM
Most likely depends on the tinter. My tint was installed with the window left on the boat.

It could vary based on model as the key is having enough room between the dash and the windshield.

Typically depends on the tinter. I have taken glass off the boat to a tinter as well as had it done on the boat. All of them have agreed, having the glass off the boat makes it easier because they will typically remove the frame which allows them to go past the edge of the glass with film and then trim excess vs cut the pieces and end up shrinking to much and having a light gap to deal with around the edge, all while dealing with limited hand space because of the dash.

KG's Supra24
05-13-2016, 11:32 AM
There is the inherent risk of glass breaking when it comes off the boat. Break the curved glass and your tint job will more than triple in price.

As for pricing ... I've heard quotes anywhere from $250 to $600.

Yes, it improves asthetics. I think it's too dark to look through most the time (because if it's daytime I'm wearing sunglasses). But it's manageable. Mine was tinted before I got the boat.

Pretty sure mine's not as dark as KG's.

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160407_133619_zpslcb0rxi6.jpg

And how dark it looks varies depending on the picture:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--DF4N69fJhU/VanEGX-imKI/AAAAAAAAZu8/KgUKReFstlgQ6029oIPgzcj8HPmS_LhDgCCo/s800/20150715_173821.jpg

Because in this shot, it doesn't look dark at all.

Mine had it when I bought it, it was the first thing removed, safety issue. I'm sure your insurance company would it as a reason to deny any claims. Not to mention you may need to have someone with limited experience driving, you don't want them running someone over or something..

I had no complaints at 20%. I know darker would look even better but Oregon isn't exactly the sunshine state. Traysons appears to be 20%.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160513/8824945e4d315b13615c4b681d65ca0e.jpg

Tinted boats look 1000000x than Untinted

This is my 5th tinted boat

Daytime, it doesn't make a difference. Nighttime, any see much

No body looks through the glass anyways. You flip the bolster up and look above it

Most important advice I can give you is to NOT let them pull the glass. It voids the warranty and it will never align again correctly. The bunks on the trailer put a different stress on the hull than the bunks at the factory jig. When removed and installed on the trailer, and then the boat goes in the water, and no longer has the stress of the bunks pushing against it, it miss aligns.

I've only done 2 and had to pull the glass to powder the frames, I'm starting my third tomorrow and it has to come apart to powder the frame. You guys getting factory black frames are lucky, I wouldn't go to all the trouble when plenty of tinters are doing them on the boat.

viking
05-13-2016, 05:24 PM
Pulling the glass allows a cleaner end result vs. not. You will see a small gap where the tint is trimmed versus done all the way to the edge and covered with the frame and bottom channel. Most will never notice the difference unless you happen to have the alpha anal retentive gene such as I do!
5% looks the best and 35% gets into the neighborhood of why go through all the work?
15-20% is ideal imo for looks and functionality.
Cheers!

If you're asking if my tint film has a seam, then no. I've never seen anything that would hint at a seam when I've cleaned the inside or outside of my windows.

On my 08 LSV i went with 5% and I had to remove the windshield and they took the glass out, it didn't go back together to well and never looked perfect.

http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu114/mmandley/Picture028-1.jpg (http://s639.photobucket.com/user/mmandley/media/Picture028-1.jpg.html)

On the Mojo I took the windshield off the boat but they didn't remove the glass, so I have 1/4 black tape around the edges that now needs to be replaced from shrinking from the sun.

It looks a lot better then the 08 did though in my eyes.
Its also 5%. I personally wouldn't own a boat without the tint, I like the privacy it provides when driving, sitting, and I think it just sets the boat off.

Denied insurance claims due to safety concerns? Who looks throught their windshield while driving anyways??? I have tint on mine that was on it before I bought it and if I ever buy a new one I imagine I will tent that one too. Sitting in my seat with the bolster down I can't see out the windshield without slouching due to the frame being directing in my line of sight, that's a bigger vision obstruction than the tint!

I have a 1/4" gap all the way around the two forward sections of windshield so my guess is the previous owner DID not remove the windshield and the tinter did a crap job. Been meaning to do the black tape around like Mike mentioned.

Was expecting someone to ask that LOL.

Actually it doesn't sit nearly that deep, that pick was taken as the rider fell and I was slowing down.

At that point only 3500 was in the boat but it was listed heavy to Goofy surf side.

We still run that weight now but it sits a lot more even.

Here you can see it rides much higher when its cruising in surf mode.

I use the windshield all day long, looking thru it and over depending on speed, not to mention I have many new drivers(girl friend and ladies) who are very nervous about driving. If you're the only one that ever drives I guess it's OK, you'll probably get a few that may refuse..

I share the driving load so I can board more and drive less. If they're nervous driving that's a good thing, we even turn the radio off so they can focus..

Bum deal. Let them know.

Possibly worth mentioning ... the shop I use does vinyl car wraps as a primary business, which may be more accustomed to curves.

I paid sub 400 for tint, vinyl frame wrap and several additional decals, which I'd call a good deal. It seems 400 is typical but I've heard quotes of 600

What % is yours and do you ever look through the windshield when driving or just look over it?

KG's Supra24
05-18-2016, 09:35 AM
Mine is 5%. Current and previous boat.

I do both, through it and over it. If there is a lot going on, I'm looking above the windshield, though. For me, the windshield frame creates a blindspot.

I drive around all day with tinted windows in the truck ... maybe that's why I'm confused about the visibility concerns?

I'll admit, I tint for aesthetic but I don't feel like I lose function. 5% sure does look mean ...

Gotta agree, I have had every car I owned since I was 16 tinted, I just can't stand cars with no tint really. LOL.

I look through mine in the day at times, mostly when we have a head wind and spray is coming over the windshield, other wise I look over it most of the time to see better.

As for people driving my boat, if they are nervous, or if i have to turn the stereo down, they are passengers or riding the Dock.

That's a pretty piss poor response. It's the best your going to get if they want to take the easy way out. What did he charge for that hack job? Unfortunately boats are extremely difficult and most don't have the talent or patience to do it. And some installs just don't allow enough room between dash and glass.
That's why the best way is to remove glass and even then there are very few willing to tackle the job and do it right.
I paid $400 all done and my guy removed and re-installed the glass.

Maybe you can get a massive discount/refund on the price of the job and then boarder the tint with black tape and live with it for a season or 2? Just a thought.
