Am I the only person that struggles with this? Are all Moomba v-drives like this. Or just my OBV? Yes, it looks stupid, but don't worry; it also performs just as well as it looks (lol)

I want to move it vertical, just have to figure out the right mounting points to get it to open and close fully, which is a tricky feat.

FWIW this is the only complaint I have about my boat after 3 years, so I'd say that's pretty darn good!

Mine is vertical, not bi polar like yours. Lol

Ya know, mine might deserve a relocation too. it seems to cross directly in line with the fill hose on my ballast bag. No bueno.

Mine is the same way and it seems it has been like that since 2009.

The screws in the particle board always come loose.

I think it's been that way for longer than that- at least 06?. My 08 is that way and it has always been a hassle with the ballast bag. I would love to see what you come up with...

My 06 24SSV is the same... Plus on the drivers side I have a walk through plate under the cover

Same mounting on my 05. Works but doesn't have much holding power when open.

I purchased some stronger struts a couple weeks ago for my 06. When I get them on I will let u know if it works.

So on my XLV I was going to experiment with simply moving the struts. But it turns out that the hardware that is holding the bracket on to the bottom of the sundeck cushion is actually a machine thread nut and bolt. the bolt is obviously on the inside of the sundeck cushion HDPE.

So if I am going to move that bracket, I'll lose whatever hardware is trapped in there with the foam. I'll have to switch to regular screws. So I have to make a run to the hardware store go get some thick stainless screws.

I'm kind of thinking of moving my strut to be either on the front or back of the opening, going parallel with the fore or aft wall of the locker (reaching from port to starboard). Any thoughts on why this wouldn't work? I am thinking that if I mount it towards the aft, it could interfere with squeaking boards into that locker. But if I put it more Forward, then it will be right there when you're in the back seat reaching into the open locker... So not 100% sure on placement, but thinking that not having it so flat and in the center would be an improvement in accessibility. (but still wondering if there will be any adverse affects on functionality.)

Hey Trayson, not sure if this helps but here is how mine is mounted. It's slightly to the rear of center, I haven't noticed it being in the way at all.

Well, that addresses what I was wondering about. THANKS! That is definitely the orientation i was thinking of, just either all the way forward or all the way back. As it is currently on mine, the brackets and struts actually will hit my fill elbow on my bag when they're full and getting ready to pop the locker. That's the main reason I'm not wanting to mount them in the center like you have yours.

Can you measure the length of the total strut length, and just the shaft length? That came out wrong...

I measured my "shaft" yesterday and I found that I have more "extension" than I need for the sundeck. So putting my XLV struts like Dusty has his should be no problem whatsoever. I just need different screws to hold down my shaft bracket on the back of the sundeck...

And now I feel dirty and need to go take a shower.

The issue with my OBV is that the shaft won't collapse enough, like it's too long, but looking at Dustys I'm thinking that I need longer...

Isn't that always the case when we look at Dusty's? He is a god among men.

It works! Just doesn't stand up straight... I hear that happens with age!

Had to take the end off of the old strut to make it work though.

on the above picture, the body of the strut (top black part) is 10.5" and length of the whole thing extended to what you see in the pic is 18" and the length of the shaft excusion is 6.5" the black lower end is 1"

For what all that's worth.

Ok, I have a combo that works!

I ordered these L shaped mounts, tinkered a little, and have a winning combo!

And yes, the fabric is shitty. I think I'm going to put a surface of 1/4" Starboard over the whole underside, and bolt the brackets to it, since screws don't really hold well.

trayson
05-22-2016, 04:36 PM
why did you need to change the brackets? What am I missing? what do these have that the other ones didn't?

ian ashton

I have no idea, I can't get my brain to process the geometry, but for the life of me it wouldn't work with the other bracket, and does with this. I do know that it puts the strut mount a little further down (away from the surface) so the strut actually holds the hatch down, where before the strut 1. Didn't have enough room to collapse, and/or 2. Was trying to perpetually open the hatch when it was shut.
