Just bought the wife a 2016 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 which will tow a 2009 Outback V.

What did y'all do about going from a round 7 pin connector to the flat 5 pin connector?

Cool - I was wondering about that adapter. Did you have to switch any wiring to get the truck's reverse signal to the trailer brake release?

Nope, mine was plug-and-play

Mike, do you have a Toyota truck?

Thx for the info.

No, I have a 2013 Chev Tahoe, but I believe (maybe others can chime in) that those 7-way plugs are all wired in a standard fashion

I've heard "rumors" that some adapters are different and require some rewiring, but I've never seen it in person. Every vehicle I've ever towed with and needed an adapter (2002 GMC Sierra, 2003 Toyota Sequoia, 2008 Toyota Tundra, 2011 Toyota 4Runner) the adapter has worked without any issue.

I think they are all the same. Just be sure you get 5 flat not 4 flat. I have one that has both so I use 4 for my little utility trailer. Looks kinda like this one:

In general all 7 pins should be wired the same and you can find a 7 to 5 adapter at most boat or trailer stores, or online.

If you already have a 7 to 4 pin adapter you can use it on a 5 pin, and when you reverse you just have to flip it (and turn your lights on if they aren't auto on) which will release your trailer brake when backward pressure is applied. I do this a lot when I forget to bring my 7 to 5 pin adapter in our other vehicle since both of our vehicles can tow but I'm too cheap and/or lazy to buy a second 7-5 adapter when I have a bunch of 7-4s laying around!

i just leave a 5 to 7 connected to the boat all the time. i have never had issue with the wrong wiring, nor have i heard of any 1st hand accounts of the problem. no get martha out for a swim, it is april now and your water should be warm enough for you.

I have a 2011 Tundra which i have a 7-5 adapter as well and I have issues with the 5pin from the trailer pulling out of the adapter (or falling out) some times. It has happened enough that I ordered a 7 pin pig tail that I will be cutting the 5 pin and splicing the 7 pin pigtail onto the wires on the trailer. Just wanted to give my experience.

The end cap on the picture has a pin in the middle which indicates the backup circuit. Strange, the biggest pin is used for the backup lights.

Honestly You need to use a test light and test each one. Not all trucks are wired the same, its not a Universal everyone do this type of thing.

On my 06 F350 was not wired the same, as my 08 F350. IDK why but they weren't. On my truck if I recall the center plus was hot 12V to charge the batteries on the RV trailers.

My 08F350, 13F150 and 14 Ram2500 the 7pin factory connector has all been identical, makes me think the 06F350 was wired different at some point.

Get a plug with Lights. Makes it much easier to diagnose if it is the plug to the truck or lights on the trailer when you have an issue.
If the plug isn't flashing or all are flashing (ground), then you can figure if it isn't pushed in hard enough, plugs aren't tight or wire quicker.

The truck plugs are all wired the same from the factory for liability issues. No guarantees with a used truck or an add-on connector as many trailers are miswired and some people then wire their trucks to the trailer. Two wrongs really doesn't make a right but for that particular truck and that particular trailer it does.
