View Full Version : How do you weight your LSV with your gate?

It seems that with the gate, homemade or otherwise, you can run a little less weight or at least run a little more even weight. I'm trying to figure out what the most economical setup is that will deliver a great wave. I have only really had a couple hours out with the gate I built. I did run Moombadaze's gate last July for a bit but had the boat slammed pretty good.
So, do you have a setup you like? Do you have a minimalist setup you use with the gate that makes a satisfactory wave? I am trying to figure out the best ratio of side to side and also of bow/stern. Let's collect everyone's experience with the LSV here and share your best pointers. Thanks.

I was always fully weighted down. Both rears full, locker full and ibs full. Found the best wave was from being even and not listed.

I still slightly list, but that's mainly because I only have a 650# bag in my starboard locker. I run everything full (Center + IBS, 1100# Port, 650# Starboard) for my regular wave. It makes a pretty sweet wave with the gate. It really doesn't feel like it's listing much, but I guess it is a little.

Listed slightly.. 1100 Surfside, 500ish non surf side, I also have a 400 in the cooler area, plus center and IBS. We like a monster wave.. Lol

Great discussion guys. Do you all have photos of your gate? I know there is a thread with some pictures but from various boat. Curious about ones on LSVs.
Did you all keep them flush to the side or at an angle like Malibu surfgate?
Going to attempt to make one in a couple of weeks over spring break and any pictures and suggestions would be great.
Thanks.

Pat I run mine 60 40 toward the surf side.
We tested my surf gate at three different angles flush, about 23 degrees and then I think 12 degrees. Flush gave us the best wave by far .

What size ghetto gate board works best for you guys?

Mine seems to work pretty well. It was a 15x20" cutting board but I carved away some along the top to shape to the hull. I run mine flush. Didn't even think about trying to fan it out a few degrees. To me that would put more pressure on the platform.
Bought two of these boards-- they come in tons of colors. I didn't want white cuz I thought my river would turn it green.
