View Full Version : Wake Plate Movement

How much plate movement is there supposed to be on an 06 mobius? On mine the gauge only reads to ~1/4 above flat. Tried looking around to find the answer to this, closest I could come was here:
https://forum.moomba.com/showthread.php?17367-Should-Wake-Plate-Extend-Lower&highlight=wake+plate+movement
However it looks like both 3/4" and 4" of movement is quoted in that thread. Manual says there is limited movement so the gauge will only read from 0 to 50 degrees...thing is it doesn't say what the span of the gauge is (0-XXX). I've posted fully up and fully down pics to get confirmation. This is my first boat with a plate so I'm not completely familiar with the range of travel.

posted awhile ago...since then I've topped off the fluid; haven't really seen a difference

On my XLV, the down position is completely flat and level, up only brings it up a little bit, maybe 2-3 inches?
My gauge does the full sweep.

let me know as well if you get some answers.. I have the same question and am a new owner of a 07 XLV. the plate doesn't seem to correct or change the bow level much .. not like an I/O trim? Keep me in the loop if you don't care
Mine has much more movement than what was listed above. The sender in the actuator recently broke, OK I accidentally broke it. (no indication on the gauge) and I know where the plate needs to be set for surfing. I have had to go under the boat and call out up or down. I see the plate several inches above and below flat with the hull. If I remember I will try to measure when I get to the boat this weekend.

Cool; let us know what you find. Sounds like there's some inconsistency...mine is flat with the boat when up and extends a little bit below horizontal (pictured in first post) when completely down. Sounds like some are flat when down but above horizontal when up, and others' go both above and below horizontal. weird
Maybe depends on the actuators and how they were mounted from model to model?

This is mine in the up position and it goes down to about the same as your down position. 05 LSV my gauge does not work however. 5:00 where are the senders located? And how can you tell if that's what it is? I don't have any loose wires and the gauge is pegged all the way to the right.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160625/8759e9e3877fb140c23463d768da6c11.jpg

Pay no attention to the pond scum. We had a massive rain last night and got a lot of crap floating on the surface and the hull.
Here is min full up and down. It has a pretty good range.

Thanks guys..pics definitely help! I took a look at mine today and compared to yours, think it's not going up all the way. Looking at the actuators, I can see wear marks from where they used to slide further up. Upon further site digging, sounds like the sender is in the starboard actuator. I also read that skier's choice used 1 3/8" movement actuators and the gauges (most) were spanned for 2 1/2"...so that'd be one of the causes for the gauge not reading out full span.
All that said, I noticed the starboard actuator had more wear marks on the piston than the port side. Additionally, the port side travel is 1 1/8" while the port side is just under 1". I'm thinking I may have one of the below issues:
1.) bent starboard actuator - causing it to jam and not letting it move up any further. not sure how to diagnose this first, will continue to others
2.) fluid pump issue - haven't inspected the pump much, believe it's a simple P-D type pump and mine works well for the span it currently outputs. Granted i seem to get full extended travel (measuring wear mark to final = 1 3/8") that should mean it's pumping into it alright and this is a return issue. will check it out more next time.
3.) premature stopping? - not sure what, if anything, stops the pump from running; if it's relayed from the sender or not. If it is and my sender is busted past a certain point, this may lead to it stopping early. I still hear the pump running though so I don't think it's how it works but nevertheless am not ruling it out.
4.) ...any other ideas???
Pictures are below. You can see the wear marks on each actuator and the measured lengths.

Not sure if this applies to your 06 but when I had an issue with my 08 LSV I called http://www.bennetttrimtabs.com/ as they made the system for SC... at least in 2008... They were great to work with and can troubleshoot etc...

Thanks...I shot them an email to see what's up. Will post the result for future reference.
X2 on Bennett's service. They will fix you up.

do y'all know if Bennett did the plate in 05 as well?? I'd like to get my gauge working and don't know where to start.

Yes, it was still Bennett. Believe yours has a previous model gauge and if you need to replace it, you'll need to rewire a little. See this thread: https://forum.moomba.com/showthread.php?12434-replacing-wake-plate-guage-wiring-problems
Speaking to SC, the new gauge is p/n 105496. Below is the wiring diagram and a troubleshooting guide link from Beede.

Emailed and spoke to Bennett on the phone after doing some troubleshooting. When I disconnected the hosing from the pump, the actuators stayed in the same position / the plate didn't retract any further. As a result they suggest something internal is preventing it retracting, so I should replace the actuators.
I looked at the instructions for this and noticed it also talked about o-ring replacement via unscrewing the actuators. I'm contemplating just buying new actuators and swapping them with the old such that they will go in to the old hinge and cap. Have been leaning towards this because the hydraulic hosing is covered in sealant on the back and I haven't had any issues with leaks where the actuators connect to the hull. Speaking with Bennett, they said this could be done as long as the issue is not in the hinge. I figure after I dismantle the old piston I will reconnect the hose to the pump and run it real quick to confirm it sprays out easily. If I get in there and find an issue with the hinge, then I'll already have the new actuator on hand and go through a full replacement.
Reading through a recent o-ring thread, sounds like the things to watch out for are the small wires of the sender and the spring itself.

Yes they did. I called SC and they gave me the part number and the phone number to my local Moomba dealer. On the 05 model you have to order the pig tail also.
