View Full Version : Anyone seen or tried Ronix Wakesurf Shaper on Moomba boats

Hey there, getting close to that time of year again to start at least thinking of projects to get boat ready for another season of surfing...
I'm flip flopping between a ghetto gate and the Ronix Shaper... Has anyone tried or seen the Ronix Wakesurf Shaper in action? Or found any reliable reviews on them?
I'm wondering how well it will work on our Moomba boats, in particular mine... :D
Anyone with a 2013 LSV with good plans that have worked well for you for a ghetto gate?
Decisions, decisions... :)
Only 3+ more months until I can get the boat back in the water... The downside of Canada - eh, not to mention our Canadian Peso currency...

I have seen it at my local pro shop and it's been put together real nicely. I was cautious at first but now I'm sold and know it's worth the cost. The construction is well thought out being carbon fiber and extremely light and very strong. The spacers that provided will fit almost all hull shapes and the wider one piece Velcro was a very nice upgrade. My shop did get to test it out on a few boats and their sold that is works very very well. They tested it against the 2011 malibu surf and came out with a better wave with the Wake Shaper. Their are a few alternatives to getting the same effect cheaper but you will be happy that you went with the Wake Shaper. I can also get a discount on it here in the states but not sure if that will benefit you.

Do a search for ghetto gates, I built one for my LSV and it worked really well. All in I was under $25 as I just used scrap I had around.

We may need to rename the homemade version to the "budget surf gate" or the "kitchen surf kit".

Or the "skateboard surf gate" for the skateboard ramp with velcro which is what I'm going to try this season.

Mike, Here's the one I'm building for this summer:
https://www.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=70442
Put the two wedges together and then attach to boat... Super quick to put together, so worth a shot... I just contacted my dealer again today and manual flow is still 2500$ installed for my boat... I figure I'll try the wedge for 60$ and see how it is... I'll post pics when I get to try it in June...

I think it increases the angle, and creates bigger resistance. Brings it closer to the size of the Ronix one... Also gives better surface area for Velcro to attach to boat... When does your boat go in the water?

According to the specs I found, the Ronix version is pretty close to the size of the skateboard ramp already.
Ronix: 20" x 15" x 10"
skateboard ramp: 28" x 16" x 8"

hhhmmmm.... That's smaller than I thought the Ronix was... I've written someone that sells them here, to see if they can measure (not sure if they carry them in stock)... Maybe one ramp is all you need? I'll order 2, and maybe try them both to see what works better...

So heard back from a reseller and he says Ronix ramp is 21 x 11 x 10... One ramp may be all you need... For the price and simplicity to setup I'll still pick up a couple and try it to see if 1 or 2 work better...

Just tried wakeshaper today. First it will probably take some time to fine tune, but it did pretty good. My setup was having my 1000lb bag in the bag full, center and ibs full, wakeplate all the way up and speed 10.4. One problem i had was removing the shaper and the shims!

Good to hear... Any pics of it on the boat to see where you placed it? Or wave comparison with usual setup vs wake shaper?

Didn't get that far into it, was more concerned staying warm with the 44 degree water. Wave comparision looked better and I almost landed my first 360 with it.

SWEET!!! Kudos to you for getting in the water!!!!! We still have 2 feet of ice on our lake... :-(
There's a curved contour line on the 2013 LSV that looks like it curves down right where I'd want to put the wedge, so just curious where you put the Velcro tape on yours (if it has similar contour).
I'm looking forward to trying this out, sadly not till around June...

2010 and 2013 LSV's have the same hull. They only changed the top half in 2013.

I'm really interested in the skate ramp gate. Is anyone else hesitant about putting industrial strength velcro on the gelcoat? I would think it should come off without residue just like a decal?

For the price, I'm trying it this summer. I'm trying it with a single ramp, and the double to see which one works better for my boat. When I end up taking the Velcro off, I'll post back with how it went, and what I used...
I'll have a different boat that I'm trying this on, but the dealer is installing the velcro for me now and we'll see how well this Ronix system works. I'm excited to try it, I've heard great things. I like that it is velcro, seems easier to switch sides and remove than most of the ghetto gates I've seen in person.

It'll be on the 02 Sky Supreme Pro V, which is essentially a V220. My neighbor may also put one on his 2000 Malibu Luxury V, which we surf often and already makes a solid wake.

I have been following Mission on instagram for awhile and was curious when this would get released. Nice to see some more options out there.
I'm excited to try the ronix, should be out on the water with it next week. I think the problem with the mission will be uneven boat hull surfaces, which the ronix addresses with the shims. I'm not sure the mission would work on a 06+ LSV, but then again there is a guy selling his ronix because it wouldn't work with the hull shape.

I'll definitely get some pics. Hmm, suction cups...I don't like the velcro on my boat, but at the same time I don't think I want to lose adjustability of the shims. Plus how do you plan to attacj the suction cups to the ronix? Need it to stay buoyant so can't make holes...

Is your hull 2-tiered? With suction cups, I can't picture how you would shim it on the bottom. I'd love to do this on my LSV, but I really want it to be reversible, and can't come up with a good way to use suction cups and shims (I really don't want to put velcro on the boat).

04-29-2016, 02:12 PM
I think the suction cups might push out the ramp far enough to clear the tiered hull.

I'm probably going to just attached a length of rope that I can tie to the boat initially. If it works well and I continue to use it then I may go the spray foam route to make it float.

My plan was to first try it with the 4 I have now. If that doesn't hold, then I will probably try it with 4 more. :) If I can get a good flat surface to attach them to I have a feeling that the 4 will be enough, but I guess time will tell.
I don't get my boat from storage for another week and it will probably be at least another couple of weeks before I have it in the water. :(

Found the answer in the FAQ...
How big is delta?
Delta is about the size of a loaf of bread. 14 inches Long and 7 inches wide. The panel is about 9 inches high. Don’t let the size deceive you. Delta delivers all the performance of our full size panels.
I've got to say, that looks very efficient for its size. If the skateboard ramp doesn't work for me this might be the way I go.

Ya, I really like the simplicity and suction cups is a huge plus for our lines on our hull's ... That seems really small though... I could see a V2 come out in a year with the plate being replacable for a larger modified one...
I'll be keeping my eye on the reviews for the Delta once it's released... I really like the design, and how small it would be to store... Hopefully it works as well as they say.
I like the mission delta for the size and suction cup. I don't think you need a lot of surface area to effectively change the convergence of the wave. The durability will be the question in my opinion, since it's plastic and looks to stick out perpendicular to the hull, so lots of force on it. The ronix is going to be kind of big and bulky, but it's aluminum and should be pretty durable. I like the mission application much better though... oh well I already paid for the ronix and got a really good deal, and the dealer put the velcro on my boat. I should be in the water with it this weekend!

So the dealer dropped off my boat this morning, and surprise surprise they forgot the Ronix...the deal was they would install it even, and they totally forgot it despite me texting the guy multiple times to remember things, including that. I was about 70% expecting that to happen. They will ship it to me, hopefully quick enough that I'll get it tomorrow. Since they forgot it, I was half considering telling them to refund me and I'd just go buy the Mission system. In all honesty though, I think the Ronix is going to be more effective and create a cleaner wake, plus I paid less for it than the Mission costs anyway. I just really like the idea of suction cups instead of velcro on my boat.
I will definitely post pics with/without!
Also it will be good for me to install it myself because I can install it in a position best based on the amount of ballast I plan to have in the boat. Silver lining!

So the Mastercraft thread inspired me, and I tested out my ghetto version of delta today. I didn't have much time, so I didn't tweak any settings, speed, wakeplate, etc... I just set everything how I thought I would want it and that was it. It took about 30 seconds to switch sides, and I'm pretty pleased for an initial test. So much less cumbersome than my ghetto gate. Hopefully it will be durable enough. I had slightly more port ballast just to offset me driving, but overall ballast was even. I only have a 650# bag in my starboard locker, so I didn't fill my port 1100# all the way, but I plan to upgrade to 900# starboard which I think will make it even better... As usual, the height of the wave doesn't really come through in the pics, but it looked good in person.
Setup: Speed 10.7, wakeplate 3/4 up, starboard 650#, port ~750#, Center & IBS full

I'll try to get some more pics, but the structure is basically the same as the pics you posted from the MC forum in post #63. The big difference is I made mine at about an 80 degree angle from the boat. The dimensions of the panel that sticks out is 11" long by 6" tall. I used 3/4" HDPE mainly because I just had some lying around. I only drove for about 2 minutes total with it on due to time constraints, but no issues in that small time with the suctions cups. I'm a little nervous about the water pressure breaking the plastic handles that engage the cups, but we'll see.
The wave looks pretty much exactly the same as it did with my gate, but I won't really know until I can ride it hopefully in the next week or so. My ghetto gate wave was really long and forgiving, so I'm hoping this is the same.

Kewlio! I post pics of mine when I get it done... I'll make a couple of prototypes to try a couple of different things. I love the simplicity, ease of use, and suction cups rather than Velcro. I may have a couple of new ramps and velcro for sale if this works out... :D

Nice job csm! I am almost finished with mine. I was having trouble getting both suction cups to grip on the side of the boat. The harbor freight gripper is made to hold flat objects. I had a hard time finding a place were both cups would latch on because of the contour of the side. I will try it this weekend and also on my friends centurion. I went with angle of 45.

yea, I like the idea of a hull mounted gate. I'm really not believing that a platform mounted device causes no harm to swim deck or hull.
If the skateboard ramp doesn't do what I want, I'll definitely create one of these pseudo delta's.

Well, the plan was to head to the lake with my boat this afternoon to test my ramp gate. As I went to pull it out of the garage I couldn't move it by hand. Thought I had a brake locked up. Hooked up lights to see if brake release would work. No dice. Crawled under it and noticed the right fender bunk was rubbing on the tire. I thought, "must have been the high water" from when we put it on the trailer Tuesday. I pulled the tire off and unfortunately confirmed the dreaded torsion bar failure. Gonna be a week minimum before I can test my gate out. Sorry fellas.

Hey there Mike, I like your design man!! How did you remove the suction cups to drill into the bottom part? I get mine today or tomorrow and want to be ready. Just wondering if the lever simply screws off?
You just push the suction cup up and the lever will come far enough out of the top side that you can remove a pin holding it all together. Remove the pin and everything else will come apart.

Here's two that I made to try... I looked for the metal bracket Mike had, but the Lowe's in Canada didn't have it... Made mine longer with wood so I can adjust the length down... I'm also trying one with two planks on it at either end to see if it does anything... Planks were from dollar store... ) I made two.. Under 20$ each to make... They are longer than I'd like for now, but will adjust as needed.. Thanks for all the great ideas everyone!!! I'll test out and report back what works best and post my further models (likely smaller than these ones). 2409624097

Looks like I'll have 2 brand new ramps still in the box and 25 feet of industrial Velcro for sale... The under 20$ cost to make the suction cup gate is increased by the cost of the ramp equipment I bought but didn't use... Next week something new and better will come out making the suction cup g8 obsolete... lol...

It worked better than I thought it would. It did not move and no damage to hull at all. But it will only lock onto a flat surface. The only place I could get both cups to lock was at the very bottom. It was completely underwater all the time. But it did not throw any spray or wake when riding. Since it was so low I did not think it would work. It made the wave instantly better. Taller and more push. I used it for about three hours. Could not do much tuning because everyone wanted to ride. My video was terrible. A combination of me using my wife's new LG phone and beer.

Any of you thought about drilling some holes or something to mimic the mission delta triangular holes? I'm assuming that reduces the stress and maybe even break up the water a little more by disrupting the flow and creating turbulence.

Yours is clean cut! My hand jigsawing didn't get quite that nice looking haha.
One thing that wasn't on my receipt I posted on the TT thread, is some lock washers. I had some already, so didn't buy any new. But if you don't use some kind of locktite, definitely use a lock washer so it doesn't come apart.
Also, these DO NOT FLOAT.
Iceman, I attached with the same airhead bungee rope. Mine took the foam floaties on that rope straight down to the bottom of the lake when I test that. So make sure it's attached to something, and if it's not, have a boat bumper attached to it somewhere to keep it afloat.

It was amazing to say the least. It did however come off a few times and last time it somehow managed to come off bungie tie down and made its way down to all the sunken ships on bottom of lake.
Here you go though! Check my gauges for percentage. This was the heaviest I loaded it, and it was pretty dope looking. Just me and a buddy and my 8 year old son on boat. So I figure around 600 in each locker and front based on percentage.

They were in down position. Might make a slight more angle and ensure it sits flush on boat. Or might build two and see if having a gap helps, or possibly drilling holes in it.
What are the dimensions of your actual gate part?
I might try gluing something buoyant like Styrofoam to the back of the gate to make it float.

Flow works great listed, but not as clean. I feel the wave was bigger with suck gate and cleaner. Upside is evenly weighted and I wasn't even sacked out! 330hp motor don't like both 1100s full plus 1150 bow weight. Downside is the suck gate did come off a couple times and it really came off when turning at surf speed to head back the other way on lake. So I'm gonna do some r&d on version too, to alleviate some of the pressure forcing suction off.

Yep somehow that bungee tie I had looped through it undid itself... So needless to say I will be using something on next one that don't allow that to happen.

I think I'm going to try and put more of an angle on mine somehow. I'll make the gate longer to give the same frontal area, should do the same job with less stress since the point of deflection will still be the same. I'm also going to drill holes to mimic the Mission.

Yes I have to turn slightly before I run out of lake. I go from one end to other and make a big turn depending on which side is being surfed. Nothing sharp just enough turn to make it back the other way within a 1/4 mile.

So it happens when up to speed, not slowing to do a sharp turn to go back and get someone in the water. It sounds like it is kind of hanging on by a thread to stay on.
Just need more suction. I think the aluminum handle will make a big difference. I've already received mine, and the difference in feel and suction is pretty significant over the plastic HOD.

If you have someone surfing (port) and you turn the other way (starboard), you're going to lose you wave. so if you are turning with surfer still on the wave, you're always going to turn towards the surf side.

No, I have cut off some of the lever on all of them. It still latches suction cup easy. Take about half of the round part off and it closes with my angles.

800 Ronix in lockers and 250 hard tank center. It did better listed with gate instead of full. Especially on goofy side. Nope it never came off once.

New one is roughly 8 1/2 wide at bottom tapering to 7 at top. Given angles are 45 degree cuts its wider than other flat ones I built. It's around 9.25 inches tall. I used a 1" and 1/2" spacer stacked.

Thanks for posting my pics! I'll just use photobucket from now on, I used to do it that way.
No it never released at all, stayed solid. We surfed for a couple hours and I took it off one time to show somebody then put back on. Held like a champ. I'm not concerned about the cutout making the lever flip, the water is coming at that lever at the same angle essentially, so there's very little force from the water trying to flip it up and that lever requires quite a bit of force to lift.
I actually copied your original dimensions. I went 7 inches at bottom edge to 6 at top and just cut and shaped as necessary.
My neighbor took some wake pics, I asked her to text them to me. I have a different non moomba boat now, but fyi I had about 1050lbs surf side, 700lbs other, 400 bow biased toward surf side. 2-3 people in the boat, didn't matter where they sat. I initially weighed it evenly with close to 1100lbs each locker, but she couldn't quite get up to surf speed even lol, will need a different prop for that. It wasn't necessary anyway. I kicked up the speed from 10.5 to 11, and that's true because I recently calibrated my perfect pass.

I'm making two more on Tuesday, so may just have to make the elephant style if I have any issues. Gonna have 4 on hand during my next lake test. So I should really be able to provide good feedback on size, shape, holes or no holes.
What I mean by that is I placed it so it was all just under the water with boat in neutral just floating. With people shifting etc i noticed it was peeking out of the water a little sometimes, didn't affect performance it seemed.

We surfed all day, the suck gate only came off once, my driver thought I was wakeboarding. The wave is great, a little different than my ghetto gate wave, worked really well. It's interesting the wave is wider and shifted over to the gate side. You can see in this pick the prop wash/wave is angled to the side..

05-23-2016, 09:53 AM
Are you having this so that the plate of the gate is flush against the side of the boat or is there a gap? Wax's looks like there is a gap but I can't be sure.
There's a gap of about half an inch on mine. I wanted that to reduce stress. It won't matter in my mind, as theoretically I think you're mostly trying to create turbulence so the water that is flowing smooth and linearly (surf side) overpowers the turbulent water.

I have a small gap 1/2in, you don't want it rubbing on the gel coat. Not sure about the angle, I just eyeballed it, maybe around 20 degrees. I'm using the middle one in my pic, didn't get a chance to check the other one..
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160523/4689a3331bb391d5ae45392dae2531d0.jpg
The angle shouldn't matter a lot, what you're looking for is frontal area I think. Too shallow of an angle might create less turbulence though and I think that's a big component of the functionality of this type of smaller gate. The Ronix has more frontal area I believe but it creates very little turbulence in comparison because it's a much more shallow angle (and needs more area due to making less turbulence). The physics mechanism behind each design is different. I will say that the benefit of the ronix or a skate gate is you won't have the upward spray, but it didn't affect anything in my opinion.
I just made mine to use 2 1/2 inch screws at the bottom I think, I didn't worry about the angle. I don't think you'd see a lot of variation, and the more angle the less stress (but the more angle the longer plate you'll need to get the same frontal area).
Don't overthink it. I just drew up and cut out some paper dies and started cutting and drilling. Luckily I have bandsaws and a Bridgeport at my disposal, which made the job significantly easier and more precise. You would need to do some serious flow analysis to find the perfect combo of boat weight, position, angle, etc...just build it and slap it on!

Yeah I'm also slightly listed to the surf side, but that was mostly because she couldn't quite handle a full 2200lbs in the back with only 400 up front, little too much back lol. I'm trying to figure out how to get more weight up front, i have a 400lb bag filed biased toward the left because my boat has a cooler under the right seat that I don't plan to cut out. for 20/20 (20 $'s and 20 minutes work) it's worth a shot. On the Mastercraft site some with their surf gate have tried it and noticed a better wave with both... Iceman from our site has done a lot of testing and he has the flow and said the suck g8 works better on it's own, and better than the flow, so he's using the suck g8 now... Worth trying it out...

I ordered one of the RONIX blocks for my 2005 lsv, and can tell you with out a doubt that it make a huge difference. I previously had a home made ghetto gate that attached to the platform and this "block is so much better. My wave have never been larger, cleaner, and easier to make. I have 750 in the rear both full, mid 700 full, and 650 bow full. ZERO list, wake plate was able to totally control the shape of the wave. Big and steep or long and rolling.
I would had my doubts about how well they would work but was blown away by the results.
I spent the weekend of the Kelowna boat show looking at wake boats and can tell you my old moomba will throw a comparable wave.

That's the one I'm going with - simple and clean......found that suction cup on ebay for $10, should get it any day now
I have the same problem as on that Master Craft. I have that step in on my XLV but it is much smaller. I put the handle on that spot this weekend and it made it by millimeters. I stuck it on twice and it only made it once.
I was wondering if that is where the gate needs to be? I was thinking so as it probably planes up on that part and the rest is above water?
Is there where it needs to be, in that notch out?
Plus it is going to suck because I will have to go into the water to mount it, can't reach that by leaning over I don't think.

That's a sharp looking boat! 😉
5:00 you will want all or as much of the blade under water as possible when at surf speeds.
Edit: after looking at a few XLV pics I think you will want to hit that step down in the hull. I also have to put mine on while in the water.

Come on that is my expertly done drawing!!! Maybe that's why my prop doesn't work worth a damn.
I think you are right, it will have to be down there. If it moves vertically at all it will probably pop off. I tried two brands and they are the same size. I will maybe need to do something that starts above the notch and goes down and in. This is going to suck...or not suck.

Poison
05-26-2016, 01:38 PM
5:00, I also have the 07 XLV. I made mine with the HOD handle and it does indeed work best down below the hull notch. It is actually the perfect position and puts the top of the gate right at the waterline. If you put it above the hull notch, I don't think it will catch enough water. I was also able to attach it without getting in the water. You can reach over from the swim deck or lay on the sun deck and reach down. I thought at first that it wasn't going to work because the thing kept popping off, but on about the 4th try, I got it to stick. It made the wave significantly better looking. You really have to push hard to get the suction cups to stick well enough to roll around at 10.5 MPH, but once it's on, it should work fine. I'm probably going to get the metal handle as well because the Team Talk guys are saying that it sticks better.

I used this one and fortunately it was different than pictured:
SeaStow 70080 Quik Grip (White/Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005HINR2I/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_ZqZrxbE1CH4X0
Now that one is back ordered so I've ordered a couple of others to try. I have a new design idea to try that may work well for you. I'll put up a sketch or make a quick prototype this weekend.
5:00, I also have the 07 XLV. I made mine with the HOD handle and it does indeed work best down below the hull notch.
Thanks for conformation on that. I was planning on the metal one to start with also. It says it has a few more pounds of suck to it and they have the same cup size from what I can tell. I am in the middle of replacing the swim platform with HDPE to the dimensions of the Craz platform so I don't think I can attach it from there. Glad to hear you had it working.
Is your flat part toward the bow or the stern. I see it both ways.

As long as your sketch is better than mine. Real boats have curves.

The flat part is toward the bow and angled at about 75-80 deg using the nylon spacers. Mine is almost the exact specs as the one at the bottom page 34 on the Mastercraft forums https://www.mastercraft.com/teamtalk/showthread.php?t=70442&page=34 The only difference is the dimensions on the plastic are a little bit different on mine (only about .5 in difference). Unfortunately I started before the aluminum handle emerged as the front runner. I will probably order it and make another one. It is rated at 220lbs while the HOD is 200lbs. I think the 10% difference will help.
Thanks, I will see what I can come up with.

So I made my first gate yesterday. Ent on boat well and stayed on well and only fell off once. 1st person on was my daughter and she is yelling at me she doesn't like it as much as the ghetto gate while surfing. She is beginner like all of us but could tell there wasn't much push. After getting couple more kids up I finally tried it and definitely wasn't any push at all. Little disappointed to say the least. Will try in a couple of more locations etc and will report back.
1100 bags in back about 60/40 surf side, ski locker and IBS mostly full. 4 adults and bunch of kids so had plenty of weight.
Will have to figure out how to minimize picture to post.

So my plastic HOD couldn't handle it anymore. Not the plastic, but the rubber actually tore around the metal insert inside of it. That's some pretty soft rubber.
I went to home depot and they only had singles but I bought two. They have much harder rubber on them, hopefully they'll work. They have handles on them and I'll have to cut off at least one and use the lever from the HOD.
Anybody know if the aluminum HOD is stronger rubber than the plastic one?

Having good luck with this style handle. Testing this out tomorrow morning:

Aluminum is way stronger off amazon!

Iceman, do you specifically mean the rubber cups are stronger rubber?

Well the handle is way stronger but the suction is twice the strength that I've noticed. Hasn't popped off once on the three boats I have tested!

Didn't you have a plastic one first?
I've actually swapped out the suction cups from the single handles I bought at HD and put them into my HOD, they seem to be pretty strong. There's a significant difference in the type of rubber between each. If the aluminum HOD has the same rubber as the plastic one I'm betting it'll eventually rip like mine did.

v2.0 is a big success. Never came off with the stronger suction cups today

I have both the plastic HOD and the aluminum. The suction cups are totally different. I'd say the aluminum one is twice as strong, and very thick plastic in it for the cups... The aluminum rubber is so strong, that I'm not bothering with the plastic HOD...

How is the wood attached? Hidden screws beneath the suction cups?

couple questions Mike:
how many screws per cup?
Any guestimate about the angle the "gate" tilts?

couple questions Mike:
how many screws per cup? I used 3 screws per cup - hopefully that's enough
Any guestimate about the angle the "gate" tilts? My angle is 100 degrees....no real science there, I just guessed from looking at the Mission version and others.
