Labor Day weekend was supposed to be the "Moomba/supra Jam" at Prineville Reservoir. But with water 15+ feet low, everyone bailed from there. I was bummed because I'd scored a cabin from Wed - Mon. But such is life. We rallied a backup plan and pressed on to Lake Billy Chinook at the Cove Palisades State Park and got a couple of decent camp sites and a boat slip.
We had 3 guys that headed out Wednesday after work, and the ladies would follow on Friday.
We were representing MOOMBA and protecting the boat from a rain shower on the drive with the snap on cover.

Since we didn't have a cabin, this was our base camp for the weekend:

Since we had a midweek arrival, the campground was pretty empty and we were one of only 3 wakeboats in the boat slips. This is what we woke up to and got to enjoy on Thursday morning. We even had smooth water when we left to head back to the campground a cook up "second breakfast".

I did my son when he was 4 years old. Put him in between your legs and have them hold onto your legs if you can. Really you're almost having them sit on your lap as you're getting up. then they just stand on the board and you can even kinda squeeze them with your knees a little to hold them in place.
I've been able to ride with kids up to 11 ropeless. It takes a lot of balance and concentration. When I went with younger kids, when I got to the point where we were done, I grabbed them as I sank into the water and held them up above the surface of the water to keep their heads from going under (keep the experience 100% positive)

My buddy with the trailer actually had to leave Sunday night and be back at work on Monday. LAME! more importantly, that meant our trailer was going away. We took the mattress from the loft of the toyhauler and made a bed in my wife's F150. I was happy she had the 6.5' bed instead of the 5.5' bed! it was just right. We folded closed 2 of the 3 sections of the tri-fold tonneau cover and watched the stars as we went to sleep. it was pretty awesome actually. But it was cold as hell in the morning, and with a campfire ban, we didn't get out on the water until the sun crested the canyon walls at 9am.

How many hundred miles north of you do I live? LMAO!!!!!!
The water temp was fluctuating between 58 and 62. And the air temp in the mornings was below 60. Hell, it got to 39 degrees overnight at the campground.
I have 6 different pieces of neoprene and I'm not ashamed to use them. Hell, when it was cloudy, windy, in the 50's with water temps around 58 I would have pulled out my damn drysuit if I would have had it. My buddy didn't bring a hoody that evening on the boat and he put his neoprene life vest on over his t-shirt to stay warmer!
I think you're more than a little spoiled when you live in a borderline tropical area.

umm, there could be some truth to that, still surprised to see them that's all. I will admit to wearing a shorty in the middle of summer back when I would slalom on the Columbia river, and that's when I was in my 20's-get the idea I don't like cold water

Trust me, I wasn't thrilled. but when nights are dipping into the 40's and even 30's in Oregon's high dessert, I guess that's what happens. in late July we were there and the water temp was low 70's and it was fantastic!
We had people trunking it in the same water. I'm just don't like to be cold, have nothing to prove, and own a ton of gear! LOL

I have been riding with my son now for 2 yrs on the surfboard. He is 4. For us it is super easy to get up, just have him wrap his arms over your forearms and barely rest his feet on the board. As you are coming up you can squeeze them a bit with your elbows and they just dangle until you are up. Once up he will let himself down onto the board grab my legs and you can then pinch with your knees to hold them as you are getting into the wave. The reason I come up with them on your arms is that it allows you to have a lot of control with your feet and keeps their head up and out of the water and spray.

Went out on Saturday and Sunday mornings since my son was in town for his visit; and also because summer is slipping away. The boat launch at 8am was as crowded as I've ever seen it in the morning--with tons and tons of fishermen out.
The wife got some great runs in. A 15 minute line ride was a new record for her. Sadly, my setup really needs some work (okay, it's pretty horrible) when I only have my 55 pound son on the surfside. The wave was yuck to say the least. I am pretty sure what I need to do is completely drain the non-surfside locker and maybe play with the speed. But the wife is doing great and enjoying riding. Sunday she was doing awesome getting slack in the line with regularity.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IMbp8Vv3Xhs/Vfb6Hu6giTI/AAAAAAAAaOM/0ln7TcPOwpw/s800-Ic42/20150912_095615.jpg
My son just learned how to get up on a wakeboard at the end of July. He'd been working on the surfboard a lot and had got on top of the water, but never really rode. He didn't get in the water on Saturday because his wrist was bugging him. On Sunday it felt better but he didn't want to take a pull behind the boat, even though we told him it might be his last time for the whole season. The river was empty, the water was still 65 degrees (not bad for us), and it was smooth. So after a decent amount of persuasion, he decided that he was willing to take a surf pull.
His first pull was his best to date and we were really excited for him. We think he got spooked at the thought of riding through the wash from the center to get out into the flats. We gave him a little coaching and the result was his first real lineride. We were super excited for him and he was very happy that he was willing to get back in the water on Sunday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SozVScQP9ZU&feature=youtu.be
After that, it was just relaxing in the sunshine and enjoying a quiet river. Jaxton even got in some time with the R/C Wakeboat.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VGH580bLN8M/Vfb6I1wL9gI/AAAAAAAAaOU/c1ZUjGdkb24/s800-Ic42/20150913_101115.jpg
I felt so content with how things went Sunday that I didn't even take a surf set for myself. How can you complain when you can slalom ski from the edge of the no wake zone by the boat launch down the middle of the Columbia River.
So with me doing a Slalom and a Wakeboard set, the wife doing a decently long surf set, and my son doing a really short run on the surfboard and then motoring back to the dock (retracing the length of my ski and wake earlier that morning) we filled up the boat and at $2.52 a gallon, it was a $13 day! Woot!

This came out kinda cool. I'm not much of a slalom skier, just can get up and freeski around a bit. But it was fun to see the video of some RARE midday glass.

Gotta admit, that midday glass does look pretty good in your secret channel. What time of day?

Almost unheard of. And Not another boat from end to end of "my spot" During my ski run.
It was so awesome that I couldn't help but finish the day with a ski.

We spent the weekend pulling out the water toys and getting them ready for winter, this is one of the downsides of living in Winnipeg :( September has been good though, with warm weekends and light boat traffic since lots of people have already packed things away for the year. Tried out my GoPro, I will need to aim it up a little higher next time.

Historic night tonight. I knew this would be one for the books! The forecast was 75 degrees and virtually NO wind. And it delivered. Smooth water and NO boats out playing besides us. Cindy had a doc appt and work's been crazy, so we couldn't get on the water until 5;30pm. Started with a slalom set for Desi and me. Then a wakeboard set for each of us. As my wakeboard set ended, we pretty much used up all the daylight there was to offer.

But we had to get Cindy a surf set.
Well, Cindy not only did her first night surf, but she also got her first freeride! She surprised us all! I'm so proud of her!

Made it to the end of September. Two evenings in a row on the water. It's getting tough as the sun is now setting before 7pm.
To get in a decent amount of ride time, I had to bring the boat with me to work and have the wife meet me there. (I work about 5 mins from the launch).
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KkEJZapg7RY/Vgy7OOP7-kI/AAAAAAAAaiQ/Ge2XJrALcjg/s800-Ic42/20150930_125249.jpg
But warm temps in the 70's and no wind = smooth water that we just can't miss. Water temp is still above 60 at least. we're just in wetsuit shorts and heater jackets (although my buddy was trunking it tonight). Gets a little brisk on the way back--so I'm happy I finally installed the heater.
My wife's now freeriding on the surfboard consistently and is cruising all over the pocket with lots of control. She's super stoked and is definitely hooked. There's probably a drysuit in her future this winter. (we'll wait for the Wakemakers Black Friday sale).
Not the best surf wave i've ever produced, but she's still having a blast and is all smiles.
