00' Outback

Weird thing just started. Went to turn engine off after running and it wouldnt shut off. It finally did but sputtered then shut off, any ideas???? Is this a fuel issue, filter??

How long did it stay running...just a few seconds or minutes.

It sounds to me like a clasic case of dieseling. That is often caused by carbon deposits in the combustion chamber that act like glow plugs and ignite the fuel without the need for spark. Other causes are timing that is off or too low an octane rating of the fuel. I would first try a tankfull of the premium and see if it goes away.

I was wondering about the octane but at first it wasn't diesling, it wouldn't shut off period. It wasn't sputtering either, just kept running. I put it in neutral, revved it a bit and then it shut off.

After that it diesled and then shut off.

What octane are you running; I believe Indmar calls for a minimum of 89. Another possibility is the timing being off.

Isn't the 89 requirement just to meet Kalifornia emmision requirements?

Wolf, you can still get 87 out here in the fly-over states ;) ……. I’m not sure where Matman is located…

I run 87 octane but it suppose to be using 89 octane. If I had knock problems then I would have to go to the higher octane but I don't. The fuel injection systems have an anti-knock sensor that helps eliminate the knocking.

Sorry Wolf,,,,, I read your post the wrong way, My bad, fingers work faster then the brain sometimes……

You could be right, but I run 89 all the same.

I've been running 87 I thought that's what the manual calls for. This boat is Carb not EFI, not sure if that makes a difference or not.
