I've been reading some of the threads on here about boards for bigger guys, I'm 6'1" 240ish 50 yr old. I'm just getting started with surfing. Looking for something that is relatively easy to ride and cruise. Probably not looking to do anything too crazy. I see that several of you recommend a board like the Doomswell Bigstep for big guys. I can get a Bigstep for $675. Locally I can get some other boards like the Hyperlite Shim for about $425 or a LF Custom Fiver 5-4 for $500. Would I be better to get one of the less expensive boards to learn on or go ahead and get something like the Bigstep?

get the better board, once you learn you will out grow the other board. most of us have boat boards for beginners and not till they are proven can they use the nice boards. so they don't smash it into the back of the boat.

+1 Go for the better board. Trust me. I thought the same way and two lower end boards later, I finally went with a company that deals with surfing solely. I would have saved money if i would have just spent the money upfront on the better board.

Thanks. Talked to Brock last night and ordered the Big Step. He said the larger Drone would work also but didn't have one in stock.
