We had a bit of excitement this weekend with the Redbull Flugtag in town. I wasn't able to attend because of a friend's wedding and a part of me is glad I wasn't able to make it...

Just a few spectators:

Big drama:

Sadly the Portland Spirit (who admittedly had the right of way per USCG navrules) decided it needed to leave it's dock 200 yards away to take about 100 sightseers on a cruise up river and rammed its way through recreational boaters that were trying to pull anchor and untie from each other. Of course the rec boaters were in the wrong for anchoring in the channel, but sucks that the situation even had to happen...

^^ Yes Flugtag was nuts. We first floated in about 15 minutes before it started and it looked like this from the back row. No way we could get any closer. Pic doesn't do it justice though. Rows and rows of boats, then scattered groups, topped off with people cruising through on SUPs, wave runners, kayaks, and anchor lines everywhere. People lining the bridge, the walkways, the docks. Everywhere...

I bet there were 500+ boats between those 2 bridges.

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k414/grberglund/MoombaMobiusV/IMG_1977.jpg

Coming back through about 3:00 was double the nuts. I've never seen the river quite like that. Between jockeying back and forth through the mayhem we saw some badazz hardware out on the water though. Lots of Supras and Moombas representing.

The Red Bull Flugtag is a competition where they have human powered devices fly off a big ramp and see who can fly the longest before crashing into the river.

Yes, you could probably substitute "drunk idiots cardboard boat race" only they weren't drunk it was probably a 25ft drop to the water.

You ever make it up this way? Our summer has been hotter than normal and the water warmish (by our standards anyway).

With the possible exception of Team Yakima. They won the event 7 years ago and my friend Lyle (wakeboard instructor and boat owner) was supposed to pilot this year's event and was going to go for the world record. Yakima Racks had sponsored their team and they had a double decker wing setup that they'd tested in their corporate wind tunnel. Lyle even took hang gliding lessons. And the event was shut down 3 entries before Team Yakima got to fly. I saw their wing setup and it was insane--all composite and carbon fiber designed with CAD drawings of real wings... I'm sure they had a lot of time/money into it. Sucks they didn't get to compete.

Hit Sylvan Lake today for a beautiful day on the water. I got some surfing in and my 10 year old daughter got to try out her new jr skis. She was wanting to drop on to slalom but it was a little choppy. Then a cool dip with my 2 girls. Love spending time on the water. Investment in family. Oh....and my 10 year old took the helm for our slow cruise. 22674226752267622677

Yes, it worked perfectly! Only thing I've tried that will actually hold. This thing sticks. $32 in materials. Right now I have a small ballast bag up front under the playpen so there is room for it at the front under the middle cushion. I'd like to keep it under the step up to the playpen and make a shelf above the bag. But, if I make another I may try to do a folding one.

Well, considering the real ones cost $145, that's quite a savings. But yeah, the foldability is pretty awesome. Hell, I was actually able to put my box anchor folded up so that the long dimension was going port/starboard and the anchor was tucked in the starboard bow storage under that seat against the helm. It was so far back I was able to fit the anchor, my shore spike, and an inflatable double seat tube and tube rope in that compartment!
The tube was one of these:

BTW, the storage bag is pretty nice to have. Maybe you can make one of those too?

Couldn't you just cut the corners and add hinges? I think that's all that is done on my box anchor.

I am sure that would work. 4 stainless steel hinges and then fab up the little crossmember on the spring. Certainly would add to the cost and work. But I'm sure he'd still be in for under 1/2 the price of the real one.

No, more like a higher than normal log floating on the water and a less attentive than normal crew in the bow.

We were in the cabins so we had our own private dock at the Marina next to the cabins (the service dock where they pump out the houseboats). We honestly didn't hit the metolius arm much. we found that when we made that turn and proceeded down that way that the water was getting worse, not better. And we got great morning water right in front of the marina and against the far canyon wall, so we saved gas.

Yeah, it was pretty awesome having all 3 cabins and that dock all to ourselves. we left all the shoes at the dock and even left the tube, skis, and the kneeboard at the dock when we weren't using it. SO convenient. I wish I could get the cabins all the time.

Although the $5.69 gas at the marina SUCKED. I figured that on my fillup, I could have saved $60 off my $145 bill by going into town. That's just robbery. I could see maybe $1 a gallon premium to get gas at the marina, but it was $2.54 per gallon more expensive than in town. Bastards.

Keep thinking and preaching this right here. We don't want Cover and Palasaides people in our section, they just muddy up the water.

At the Marina at 3 Rivers Ramp I put 80 bucks and got apx 20G so not to bad really.

If I am really feeling cheap, I goto the gas station up on land a couple miles from 3 Rivers, Angies is what comes to mind but I just can't recal.

3 rivers marina was $4.75. I bought 10 gallons to make it through with only one fill up in Culver. Culver is just a few minutes away when I stay on that side of the lake and 89 was $3.25 so I saved a hundo to drive up there once over the ridiculous $5.69 for 87. Obviously I don't bother when I stay at 3 rivers, too far away. Hell I used to pack fuel in with me but gave it up.

When I pulled up to the ethanol pumps the attendant pointed out the non ethanol pumps. I had to pass on it when he told me how much lol.

Honestly Trayson has it figured out if he can fill up a 40 gallon tank at the marina for $145. That would've been over a $200 fill up for me

it was reading a little under 1/4 tank on the gauge. so ~25 gallons. I guess my gauge isn't that accurate...

Had a bit of a challenging night on the boat. The boat had been sitting for the last 12 days and I realized when we went to leave that I had forgot to put the float chargers on the batteries. The main battery was dead. That wouldn't be a huge deal except I'd gotten lazy and wired the WS420SQ directly to the dead battery. so a little troubleshooting, a flip of the perko switch, and a quick re-wire and we not only had a good battery to boat on, but also had music to jam.

The water was SO smooth compared to what it normally is on our river, it was mind blowing. We decided to head out to our "normal spot" which is about a 15 minute ride. On the way, the boat would be going along just fine and then the boat would suddenly cut power and bring the RPM's down to 3000, regardless of where the throttle was. After another round of troubleshooting, we realized that the boat was going into limp mode because the oil pressure was low. Turned out we needed oil. We were on the border of a huge Marina area of the river, so we entered the no wake zone and idled down about 15 minutes only to find out the gas station in the middle of the marina area was closed. We docked up next to another boat that was moored and they gave me their key card to get back into the mooring area and I hiked over to Safeway, which was really close to the marina access. Of course the grocery store didn't have the oil I needed, but they did have the Coors Light that the guys requested for use of their key card.

So I bummed a ride from the guys in the checkout line in front of me at Safeway to West Marine (about 1/2 mile away) and got the oil I needed and a handy funnel. Then I bummed a ride from the guy in the checkout line behind me at West Marine back to the mooring ramp. Gave the boat its much needed oil and we were FINALLY on our way. It was 8pm by the time we were back to water we could play on.

I took a much needed wakeboard set on amazingly smooth water. My buddy took a quick wake set as well. Then we each surfed, well into the night. It was a late one (with the obligitory sh**-show at the launch, but at least we salvaged the night and they didn't have a mutiny and throw my high strung stressed out butt overboard.

Another day at sylvan lake yesterday. 30 degrees outside and not a breath of wind. Took my daughters friend and family out. My daughter dropped a ski and made it about 30 feet before she wiped. A nice improvement from 2'feet!! 2277522776

Got some time in on training the lil ones! I'm kneeling on the surfboard with my 3 year old standing in a wakeboard stance in front of me. Worked really well they get a good feel for leaning and carving that way! They were both so brave and rocked it!

Got the new board from Doomswell. Went with the Big Step. So far it's great. Wasn't able to go ropeless yet but I think as we get the wave dialed in, seemed like I could never really find a spot that just pushed me along, and I get a little better I'll be able to do it. Might even be able to post a 360 attempt or two in the old guys thread. Also got up for the first time on a wakeboard this past weekend. Not a bad weekend for an out of shape 50 yr old guy. Actually it was a great weekend being able to board with my son and have him giving me pointers. He was pretty excited to egg me on from the boat.

I'm sure with a bit more experience and a bit more dialing of the wave, you'll have it. There's 3 parts of the equation: Skill + Wave + Board.

The Doomswells are quick, so you've most certainly got the board part dialed now. The wave should be able to get quite nice. plenty of satisfied LSV riders out there.

On the skill (riding style) part, one thing I've noticed is that if the wave has just barely enough push, I find that I can stay in the pocket a little better if I'm actually carving a little rather than just trying the stand there still in the sweet spot of the wave. If I'm standing still, I have to put more weight forward to keep that drive--but it also places the rider at a bigger risk of dipping the nose and submarining the board. And as you learn to ride the doomswell, remember that he board likes big, smooth carves. it does not respond well to quick erratic movements.

As Mike Mandley told me (ever so eloquently), you can't F the board, you have to make love to the board...

I'm sure I'll get it. It was better each time I rode. I could get slack by going high on the wave and then riding down but never really figured out how to work it from there. My son got banged up and tired at one of his wakeboard lessons so they finished with a wakesurf lesson and the instructor was telling him that its easier to stay in the wave by carving rather than just staying in one place like you say Trayson. So I was doing some carving and as the weekend went on I was feeling more comfortable with that. Just going to need more reps. I'm a little slower than I used to be.

Honestly, I'd try to stay away from the "riding up the wave and coasting down". it's one of the biggest areas that I find new riders struggling with control as a result of. I find that they'll go up the wave and not be able to really put the brakes on themselves and use the rope to jerk them to a stop, then they'll go shooting down the face and have no ability to jam the brakes hard enough and they'll dunk the nose and take a plunge. Dropping off "the cliff" as I call it is tough for newer riders.

One of the things that might help is to know that the energy that you're getting from the wave is very much on the toe edge and not really coming from "behind" you as the term 'push' would imply. it's much more like the lift provided on an airplane wing. Or another fantastic analogy is that it's like riding toe edge on a snowboard on a steep slope on a powder day. Pretty much getting the balls of your feet to put that board into the edge of the wave.

Have fun, it's the best feeling to finally have it click.

Jason05216
08-17-2015, 02:46 PM
That helps. I wasn't thinking about the "push" being at the nose. I knew to lean forward to speed up and lean back to slow down but didn't really put 2+2 together there I guess. I'm sure I had way too much weight on my back foot.

Every other watersport tends to be heavy emphasis on leaning back (wakeboarding, slalom skiing, kneeboarding). so it's natural. Best analogy I've heard is that of standing on a teeter-totter and having subtle movements over that balance point being your forward vs. back lean.

I keep working on her to get that front foot more centered and towards the toe edge. But she's out there getting ride time and loving it, so it's cool.

You let people drip beer onto your sundeck? (sure, onto the towel that's laying on your sundeck--same effect, only a slight delay for the beer to go through the towel into the vinyl).

(or maybe all the beer is dripping on the dog and that's one of the old fella's functions: Head beer mop!)

My head would explode if I saw that happening on mine. Now, we're no stranger to shotguns on my boat, they're just regulated to over the side and on the swim platform...

The very small amount of beer dripping on the towel, rear deck is nothing compared to the gallons on water that are brought into the boat each day on the lake. I clean my boat religious every outing and use plenty of cleaner and uv protection. Boat always smells nice and never like beer, dog, or the lake.

As much beer that gets consumed on my boat, trust me it's been spilled several places. Idk I just clean it and party on!

Started riding ropeless at the end of summer when he was 5. He's really starting to progress just watching others. He rides a triple X skimmer.

That's awesome. I started my son snow skiing at 3 years old and he's been ripping double black diamonds, halfpipe, and terrain park for the last couple years (he's 9 now). I've only had a boat for 3 seasons and only this year did he show a willingness to try watersports. And I only have him for 1/2 the summer, so not as much water time as we'd like. I did get him a kids wakeboard and he got up on it first pull. he's still working on staying up on the surfboard, but I got him a P5 Scamp and he's making progress on that.

It's cool to see the little rippers.

That is how he started. But he has been wake boarding since he was 4. One day I told him to try to get up like he does on the wake board and the rest is history. He can even get up on my Doomswell big step and that thing is super buoyant and 5 ft long. The smaller skim board makes it super easy to pop up.

I believe it is a 4'6 triple x skim board. A phase 5 scamp would work well also.

Had to goto the River this week since they closed Hagg lake to use as fire water.

Went to Newberg Monday but no pictures worth posting were taken lol.
Tuesday went to West Linn and hit up 10th St.

Brian came out to tune up the new Digi amps, Rebecca, Ally, and Airesully <sure I am butchering her spelling> I called her Air, and Ally calls her Sully.

These two girls must have snaped 50+ pictures of them on the bow for that perfect Instagram picture, these are just a couple I got linked to me.

Ally did a couple surf sets, she was looking for those Sunset picture / Videos. I didn't take the videos so no links lol.

Anyhow after all was said and done, got off the river, had the girls put in their work and clean the boat. We started on the Port side, much cleaner, then when they got the Starboard side <Ally Surf Side> she had to clean all this mess off LOL.

Rebecca's face says it all. I didn't even surf because I don't like the river too much. Boat interior got cleaned again at home, and I had to remove the carpet and wash it down dew to the river stench lol.

Sissy... Nothing like dodging logs, gillnetters and big neon green algae islands - new this year!

Don't forget pulling up the wakeboard rope and having 3 clumps or stringy sea slime hanging on the rope!

So we did a double header. Went out on Wednesday with forecasted temps in the 90's and winds below 5mph. These are the evenings I yearn for! And it delivered.

Wakeboarding on this water is what it's all about. And remember, "Safety Third!"

Seeing that our area is going to get some "much needed rain" (we have record wildfires) this weekend, we had to do an encore night. high of 88 degrees with 4mph winds = recipe for another stellar evening on the water.

We only had three of us, which was fine since that just meant more ride time. Our normal ride spot was basically empty all night. at any given time we were the only boat playing on the water. It was amazing.

Started off with a 2 mile long slalom run. Then did another 2 mile long slalom back the other direction.
Then my friend did the same (but on 2 skis).
Then I wakeboarded a 2 mile run, took a breather in the water and wakeboarded back another 2 miles.
Finished off the evening with around a 1.5 to 2 mile long surf.
My legs were burning but I couldn't get enough of the smooth water. (I've really been going through withdrawls with the windy days we've had recently).

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ghq_1s-bsRc/Vd_oUGAhzDI/AAAAAAAAaHQ/C1IZ-pFNnnY/s800-Ic42/IMG_5914.jpg

When you can see me smiling all the way at the end of the ski rope, you know it's a good night.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tQYBQn4lz1E/Vd_oQKeuHsI/AAAAAAAAaGo/GTt8jHqYHIg/s800-Ic42/IMG955919.jpg

(also, that's boardshorts and a rash guard. No neoprene needed!!!)

It was even smooth through the main channel of the Columbia River. In contrast to days when there will be 2 foot tall whitecaps that limit the boat to 15mph or less.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8E7Oeuo2lt0/Vd_oRva-ERI/AAAAAAAAaG4/RSyYJ5dncuM/s800-Ic42/IMG955938.jpg

Love that smooth water, even if it's just cruising at 30mph back to the launch.

Brock's final run for the weekend. He's doing a great job for just being 8 and only been doing it for a year. The new board is making him a better rider as he does not have the large center fin now so he has to trust the edges more. Don't mind the power turn at the end ;) as that is not how I do it.
