I have damage like this on both sides of my platform so I want to cut off the corners. The corners also drag while surfing so I think it's a win win situation. Any advice on what angle and style I should cut the corners? Maybe some pics.

I plan to trim off the corners and repaint the entire platform. Should I keep the rails? I have not noticed them dragging the water while I am surfing and I think they help with reboarding the boat.

Mine is a foam core construction. I'm assuming yours is too. I would not recommend trimming it down unless you are well versed in fiberglass/finishing work. If not your platform will not only look way worse than now but it will also waterlog. It's my opinion you are better off building a new one out of HDPE, steal the brackets and either sell the old or put it aside.

I just want to trim the edges. I dont think I will need to go deep enough to get into the core. If so I plan to seal it off with some below water line sealant. Like 5200.

The platform is trashed so Im going to give it a go either way.

As you can see, the corners are pretty banged up. I think if it was going to waterlog it would already be too late. I'm just going to wing it. I'll post pics when I'm finished

Previous owner said he dropped the platform when he was trying to remove it by himself. Not sure.

Here are some pics of my custom platform. the best thing you can do is to really look at the water flowing off your hull when you're weighted for surfing and find that optimal amount to trim. I'm very happy with mine. almost none of it is in the surf wave and if any of it does dip a little in, it's a smooth bottom, not a big lip shoveling away all your push.

That platform looks nice. Good job. Can you link me to the HPDE sheet that you bought to make it?

Last time I was surfing I noticed that the damaged corner on my side was barely dragging. And that was with 8 people on the boat and a full surfside sac. So that along with the obvious damage is my reasoning for wanting to cut off the corners.

Im not sure I will be able to cut off enough material without hitting the foam core. So Im waiting to make a decision on what to do.

Thanks for the replies.

I used black 3/4" HDPE.

I got the material from a local guy, but he was able to ship it to me since "local" meant about an hour away through Portland traffic.

I got a 24" deep and whatever the width I was looking for. I did search and found comparable prices on amazon and ebay, but those were hit and miss. Derek was able to get me what I needed for basically the same price as online. Figure your depth and width and go from there. It's easy to work with.

Thanks for the info. I will look into it. How much did you pay for your sheet without shipping if you dont mind sharing? PM is okay if you prefer that.

I found some online for $135 shipped. He did $130 shipped. It's not cheap, but it's worth it.

Like I said, go with the HDPE. Local shop charges me about 250 for a 2x8x3/4 in white. You can get cheaper if you go with starboard. I think the lips on the original are there for rigidy and cutting them back, especially next to the brackets may bring some problems and you can go back to original of you want. You can cut down on costs by routing flutes in the top instead of foam stuff for traction.

How thick of HDPE do you need? is there flex in it at all when climbing onto it?

Most say 3/4" minimum with 1" being the preferred thickness.

I am about to pull the trigger on a sheet of black HPDE to make a surf platform. My buddy just bought a new Mojo with a surf platform, I am going to make a template from his!

I'd say this sounds reasonable. I'm getting by just fine with 3/4". But I can most certainly feel it flex. Will it every break? I doubt it. But yeah, I can feel the flex and I'm 165 pounds. That said, the stuff is STRONG.

The 3/4 is a lot less expensive than the 1". choose what you can afford and what you are willing to tolerate as far as flex. if you're ever in Portland/Vancouver, I'd be happy to show you mine.

FWIW, I ordered 1"x24"x54" sheet of King Starboard for $189 shipped off ebay. Best price I could find for 1" and the same as most places' 3/4"

Nice.. Just need some hydro and I used a router to round off the edges. :o

I would research if you can get anything to stick to it. I think if you do get something to it won't last long. If your capable with a router do a search on fluting jigs. You can mill flutes into it for traction easily and I think with a more clean look.

I have hydro with contact cement and I'm at 200+ hours of boarding and second season of boat living in a wet slip. I think that's pretty good..

I don't have that many hours but i used the DAP contact cement and hydroturf on the smooth HDPE and it is sticking perfectly.

I wouldn't worry about the hydroturf not sticking. Ive done some complex rounded/curved surfaces with it and as long as you let the DAP contact cement set up properly, it will stick to anything! Paint both surfaces with the cement and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then apply with firm pressure, make sure you line it up before you press it down because there wont be a redo!
