View Full Version : Anyone Ride Stand Ups?

Anyone like stand up jet skis? This is the only thing I love more than my boat. I've had around 15-20 skis over the past 3 years. I had a nice vintage collection at one point.

This is all i have room for now that my boat takes up most of the garage.

2010 Sx-r. Bone stock. Showroom mint condition.

I've wanted a standup for years and just haven't pulled the trigger. What are your recommendations for older (early 90s) skis to pick up as a project?

We have 3 Kawasaki JS550s 2 are the later sx models 1990;94 what a difference. mj I bet your 2010 is really fast its a 800 right?

@dusty: It depends on your weight. a 92+ 550sx will be fine for any beginner, and they are usually cheap (<$1000). You can do a few mods and it will be plenty of power and fun until you get the hang of it. 650sx's are okay, but dont expect them to be faster than the 550 (often times people expect this). The 650 weighs more and doesnt handle as well as the 550. A 750sx would be ideal, if you can find one for around 1000 to 1500 bucks I would say get it! But usually they will be priced at 2k and up.

@mikes: Yes it's an 800. Very fun ski. The most stable stand up I've ever ridden. It's bone stock but it carried me to 51 mph on GPS (I'm pretty light at 145 lbs).

Yup, love them. First ridden were 90'ish SX's, that got me hooked. Before that we had the couches which are ok for tooling around but nowhere near as fun. First purchased was a 1994 Yamaha FX, very small, light. I then got a new 1998 Yamaha Superjet and then my wife a new 1999 Superjet. We still have them both and ride them pretty much every weekend in summer. We modded them with ignition, heads, carbs, pipes, etc. Towed them to Havasu from Chicago once when we went out there to watch the jet ski world finals. They have been the most fun and reliable motorsport toys we ever owned, they seem bulletproof.

I have a early 80s 440 with the exhaust going out the side. Bought it for 50 bucks at a garage sale. It came with a dolly to move it around. New battery then later a new starter and is been running hard for about 15 years now.

Awesome glad to hear we have some stand up riders on here.

Id much rather work on a jet ski! I think that's what attracted me to them in the first place. They are so easy to work on and the parts are cheap and plentiful for the older skis. It's fun to mod them just like anything else!

Post some pics of yalls skis!

Not much to show off like that haha. If I had 30K to blow it would be on a newer boat, not a stand up jet ski to do flips lol.

I'll try to remember to bring the go pro along on a ride this weekend and post some footage.

Makes me miss my seadoo HX, the same style hull as a standup but with a seat, single person, very tippy..

It was a ton of fun, till you got thrown off sideways head first, getting back on you had to side star by grabbing the handle bars and gun it...

Yeah the HX was Seadoo's attempt to compete with the Yamaha Wave Blaster, did get to ride one once, lot of fun. Seadoo also had the 3D but that looked more like standing on a stdown hull.

LOVE riding my standup. I have a 1996 Yamaha Super Jet that I enjoy the hell out of. It is all stock other than the pipe, impeller, grate and plate. Things runs like a dream. The other ride I have is a 1995 Yamaha Wave Blaster. Yup I am a Yamasnob when it comes to PWC.
I used to ride that Blaster in the surf for a bunch of years. I lived for that at one point, totally addictive. I throw that in there because it is between a sit down and a stand up. It rides like a dirt bike on the water. They are a pain to learn but totally worth it. It's job in life is to dump you off but once you learn to ride it is hard to go back to anything else.

Post it up when you get it! I would love to have one but $$$. Maybe one day when I fix mine up enough to warrant having such a nice piece of hardware. Happy with my motor but I want to repaint the hull, get rid of the purple plastic, rub rail and so on first. For some reason all of my time and money are going into this whole boat thing.

Are you sure it is a 1993 SXi? I think the SXi was introduced in 1995. The SXi should have dual carbs. As for price I would guess maybe $2500 with trailer...also depends if it has any modifications...head, pipe, etc.

Great price is under 1800. I've owned multiple, sx and sxi pro. Excellent ski, quite different than my superjet. A 550 is a great time and super cheap. 650 is kind of a turd but more stable. 750 sx, sxi, or pro will all be the best kawi (besides sxr). Superjet you can never go wrong with. Find the best deal and ride.

Just a story on getting our Superjets in for the first time this year. Started them on the trailer, all good. Dumped them in the lake. Took my wife's out first, running good but noticed one of the sprayers (water coming out of side used to cool engine and pipe) was not spraying much...figured it was a pebble stuck in the line (as that has happened before) and kept riding...engine started to bog a little...figured old gas, moisture. Then it got worse, turned around and tried to get back to our place. Noticed ski was sinking, headed towards shore...got about 200' and shut it down, swam it to shore. Opened the hood...water was up to the carbs. Dumped it over, away from the carbs to avoid getting water in them. Found which cooling line came off...of course the lowest hard to reach one possible. Tried to start it for a while, was getting ready to hoof it up the hill and down the road to find someone to tow me...but tried to start again and luckily it started. Flew back to our place and 1 1/2 hours later I had the cooling line fixed. So a note...check your cooling lines.

If he "lost" it he should be able to get a duplicate without much trouble. Personally I wouldn't touch anything without a title unless it is in a state where a bill of sale is all you need. If something happens you are stuck with a paid for ski that you can't title. At that point you will be looking for a black market VIN plate and title to go along with it. Not worth the potential trouble.

Sketchy, that ski looks too nice to have conveniently lost a title, plus it's worth more than $1200 parted out especially with the trailer. Be aware.

I have a 96 RN SJ with the same as your mods but Factory B pipe and stock heads. The funny thing is they don't look like much (purple 90's graphics) but with those few mods it makes a huge difference. They are so damn light along with the dual carbs, narrow hull and great hook up it makes up for the low displacement. Not bad for a 20 year old ski.

I usually buy broken stuff but this one was ready to ride and still had its IJSBA racing circuit sticker on the hand pole (now stuck on my drill press). I paid $1,400 for it 7 years ago and still love it. I purchased it from a traveling priest who need the money. It was at his house on a hospital gurney in his garage. He was on the road so his wife did the transaction for him. You just can't make this stuff up.

Probably better off that way in that case. Just take your time and don't jump too fast. I spent three years waiting for mine but I am that way LOL. I just thought it would be fun but then I got addicted to it. I waited for something with mods; impeller, plate, grate and most of all exhaust. Those mods alone priced new are worth more than what I paid for the ski.
Good luck with your purchase and have fun.

Yup, I've been lurking on them for 5 or 6 years.

Looking at the old 80s 550s, finding some decent ones, what all am I looking at mod wise to really make it move and ride well? I rode some of the older ones that were stock and they just seemed like pigs , but they weren't 550s.

What do you know about a 1990 Square Nose superjet?

Has all of this:
1990 Superjet square nose
Black wrapped

Has a bunch of engine mods

After market: handle pole
hp bracket
pole spring
intake grate
head
Hour meter
Bilge pump
ODI grips
New Hydroturf chin pad
Custom hydro dipped coupler cover and e-box
Foot holds

Engine:
701 62T cases
61X ported cylinder
Cool head
Bored out
Billet single carb manifold conversion
Single carb
Coffman pipe

BobP
06-17-2016, 10:55 AM
The 701 square nose were really popular with the racers, they seemed to like it more than the later round noses. I don't think the 1990 came with a 701, I think it came with a 650. They do list ported cylinders, so I'm guessing the engine was upgraded at some point. With the single carb and footholds it seems like they set it up for freestyle. I assume you are looking in the Dallas area so I checked craigslist and found this one you are looking at. Looks pretty good, lots of mods. Price does not seem too bad...says not a penny less but if you have cash in hand maybe they will take it.

If you get one, me and the wife might be tempted to trailer ours down to her father's place in Pottsboro and meet you all on the lake for some fun. :)

dusty2221

5:00
06-17-2016, 11:20 AM
I think he was in love with that ski! It sounds like it was given a lot of recent attention and a ton of parts. Bob is right on the motor, 701 was not originally in that ski and a big upgrade. I looked at the listing too. That thing probably rips. The ONLY thing I would worry about is that it has a lot of mods done to the engine. While it makes it fast sometimes that can bring down the reliability but may not be an issue because they didn't go overboard. It is a bit more than a 701 now. The good news is he didn't mess with anything in the e-box and nothing to the electronics or electrical system. That is where I see reliability problems when people really start modding too much throwing in MSD ignitions and the like. It is set up to be quick off the start and as Bob mentioned above setup for free style so probably has a lot of bottom end pop to it. It will get up and go quickly. It probably has some decent top end also but on a stand up bottom end is where its at unless you are racing.
If the owner is up for it I would at least have him do a compression test. I am not sure what the compression should be with that setup, maybe 175? If nothing else the cylinders should be within about 5 lbs of each other. If that is good I would consider this for sure. Looks like a great machine.

5:00
06-17-2016, 11:27 AM
For $1K you won't get much in the way of mods but will still be a blast anyway. If possible at all at minimum find something with exhaust done. Those typically run around $800 used just for the exhaust. You still need to retune the carb(s) and possibly rejet as well if you do it later. You can always add the other stuff later or not at all. If that one you found doesn't work for you keep hunting. It is a good deal but if it is out of budget oh well.

Keep an eye on some of the forums like xh20.com, greenhulk.com and even on Face Book there is a good group called Superjet, SXR & Standups owners group. It has a good amount of parts listed there. Pwctoday.com is out there too but is mostly about sit down skis.

A 550 is a decently strong ski stock. Get an aftermarket pipe to lose weight and increase power. Aftermarket head, bigger carb jetted for the pipe. Look for a reed motor if you can and you're looking for a 550. They are great skis, cheap, cheap and easy to maintain and upgrade, and relatively reliable. In all honesty though, if you can find another superjet under 2k jump on it immediately even if it's a 650 and not a 701. You won't be disappointed. 701 came stock starting in 94, but a lot of people upgrade to 701 for earlier skis.

Wax
06-18-2016, 10:51 AM
550s were piston port until the 550sx in 91 I believe. Black motor is likely piston port, silver is reeds. Look for the reeds sandwiched between the intake and case. Gas intake will be on the manifold too if reed. 550sx is the best ski with a js style hull you can find.

Wax

It's not comparable to a stand up at all. However, it serves a purpose by getting otherwise uncoordinated people on a "stand up" and is fun to ride. I always keep my eye open for a good deal on one, but people still want 3k or more for them which is asinine.

A proper standup is a blast.

The nice thing is you can jump boat wakes without being anywhere near the boat so no one gets angry. I have had people wave me over to their boat to jump their wake. There is no need to jump 20 feet from a boat's transom with one of these.

Awesome looking ski but it sounds like it has no mods and he is trying to make money back on the engine. I would guess it is a rebuilt SBT. With that price without mods but a "new" engine I would pass. Just my opinion though and I might be wrong.

It is a good time of year to buy as people get rid of their toys for the winter. I guess you don't have that down your way though?

On that forum you might even ask what is for sale in your area. Sometimes people would rather sell it on the forum than CL.

I asked why it was replaced and he said the oil injection system failed and toasted the motor. Did a new motor (he confirmed not a rebuild) and blockoff of the injection. Kind of crazy that it had not been blocked already after all of these years. Sounds like he may be negotiable on the price also. He has confirmed the only "mod" is a different ride plate. Stock airbox, exhaust, electronic, everything.

That may be perfectly fine stock but I just don't know. That would be nice knowing that it is a brand new motor though, could be good piece of mind.
That is a priority mod to lose the injection system for sure. It is a PIA not having it but unless you forget to mix manually that problem will never happen. I have three skis currently and all are blocked.
I left the reservoir on my big ski and I can drain oil from that into a measuring bottle when I fuel up.

Not a huge surprise but good digging! Most either go with SBT or get an after market motor.

Figure $1800 isn't to bad if he will take it and everything looks good. Way off from his $2800 though
