For those of you that have heard both Exile SXTs and XMs, which would you recommend? I had 4 of the 6.5" SXTs and loved the sound, so have no doubt the 9s would be awesome. But I do use the mic to help new wake boarders, including my kids pretty much every trip. So wondering if I'd be better off with the XMs. What do you think? I'd go with a set of 4, all run by a 30.2 if that sways your vote at all.

I really lean towards the XM9s

Having had them all, the 7 series I preferred the SXT vs the XM7s.

Now with the 9 series I prefer the XM over the SX series. The SX sounds awesome in the boat, and surfing, can't beat them for that.

But the XM9s are not nearly as bright sounding as the XM7s where, with the much larger mid bass it has a deeper sound to it.

I find surfing right behind the XM9 to be just fine, I do have the attenuation switch on the lower setting which as I understand it makes the speaker project out more? Basically the Horn doesn't blast my rear seat people.

The SXT9 can be heard at Wake Board distances but just not nearly as loud.

You can always turn it down, but you can never turn it up enough.

My vote is the XM9s.

For a dedicated surf setup, hard to beat a coaxial for SQ. For a wake range projection, an HLCD gets the job done most efficiently. For a setup that does both well, go with the largest HLCD you can.

XMs it is then. Thanks for the feedback.

I would pick the xm's if I were to do it all over again. I only run a single pair and the have to be blasting those in the boat to be heard clearly even at surf range. If you have FAE it might be a totally different story. The sxt's sound awesome in the boat or in the cove though... Certainly a trade off. A pair of each would be awesome!

A pair of each would be awesome!

If a pair of each is needed to achieve ones goal, then a larger speaker is whats really needed. Less expensive, easier to wire, etc, etc. Also having an amp that will run summed mono can make a huge difference in a surf system. When running stereo, off axis, like surfing, most of the contribution is form the speaker closest to the rider. This limits the program material heard. In mono, both speakers play all the content.

I have a pair of each, powered by 2 XM30.2's. I love the setup - easy to tweak to get awesome short and long range sound :)

I think this is going to depend on what your budget is and what your looking for performance wise. The 2015 XM9's feature a new upgraded crossover setup that the wakeboarder will enjoy (I think Mike is running those and could provide some comment). It provides smoother sound from the generations of the model, yet is still optimized for long distance projection out to the rider. XM9 is also available in white for those looking for a white boat match.

The SXT9Q is what I call the "surf model" and is going to utilize a direct radiating tweeter that provides for more sound quality up close but will diminish over long distance. Because the tweeter is a coincident mount system, the mid bass driver is sealed and has improved performance over its pro-axial XM9 brother.

Both models come with the storage bags and 360 degree stainless steel spin clamps. They are not any additional cost.

My take is: Review how much amplifier power you have... If your light on the power side of things, I'd go SXT or get a bigger amplifier to feed XM9's. Going with 4 speakers in either model gives you the ability to spread the sound field wider. This would be more important with the XM9 as the projection is more focused.

Hope that helps!

Just one quick sound check and I'm absolutely sure I made the right decision with the 4 XM9s. They are exactly the upgrade I was looking for - thanks for all the input!

My LSV found a lovely new home in Kansas City. Still working on what the long term plan will be.
