I am looking for a good board for my 12 year old nephew to learn on. I have a LF Venture but the board weighs too much and it is hard for him to pull it up too his feet. He weights 100 lbs wet and is tall and lanky. Any help would be great.

I have taken a zap skim board for the youngest ones and added a fin and traction pad to make a fantastic wakesurf board in the perfect size.

I just ordered a board like this one for slightly bigger teens and am doing the same thing.

If you want to put him on a surf style board, the kids at Southern Surfest last year loved the idol F-grom & Chaos Contender. Day 1 makes a great grom board called the Phenom (Raleigh Hager's board)

Hi guys thanks for the response. Drew you really want to break my bank with the Phenom. I have been looking at the phase 5 icon also.

Now with that said I am heading to Vegas next week so if I win big he will get a great board but if I lose big I have an old cooler lid he could use.

I'd be looking on Craigslist and other used places. He will outgrow the board in a few years.

Check out the Victoria Debut. It's only $179. NW Boat Sports in oregon has them in stock, but you can buy them online from a bunch of other shops like http://www.wakerootsrideshop.com/victoria-wakesurf-debut-small/ or http://calmarinesports.com/wakesurf-1/boards/2015-victoria-debut-grom.html

I've had a lot of luck teaching new riders on it because it is so easy to ride.

The Phase 5 Icon is also a great board, but it is a lot more money

If he is having trouble getting up on the LF Venture, you should check out the Victoria Debut (small). It is very thin and has the right amount of float which makes it flip up to your feet super easy even for light riders, and the thin rail locks riders into the wave once they are up. With a single fin, it is super locked in. And its only $179 at most shops and online retailers

The Phase 5 Scamp is also really good for lighter riders. It has a little bit more float, so it has 3 fins to help keep it in control. Its usually around $280-300

Lighter riders will progress way faster on boards that fit them correctly. They will be more comfortable, which makes them more confident.

I would not suggest a surf style board for a light beginner. Floaty boards are really hard to control for new riders.
