Don't mean to start another long oil thread here but the Rotella T5 synthetic blend is on sale at menards for the same price as the regular Rotella. Even when its not on sale its only $2 more per gallon at menards. Wondering if its worth it or not. Anyone using it?

I thought T6 was the synthetic.

I have no issue with Rotella oils, been using then in my diesels for years.

I even picked up some this year for the boat

I believe you are correct, the T6 is full synthetic. The T5 is not a full synthetic, its only a synthetic blend. Since it was the same price I figured I would give it a shot. Wasn't sure if there were any opinions on the blend.

The only issue is at times it smells, thus the term "rosmella", if it vents it can be pretty smelly, i use Mobil 1 instead for that reason in my truck. Good oil, bad smell.

Oh and no issues with a blend, but usually the motor needs 100 hrs before synthetic should be used, so i would suggest that is true for a blend. Without the break in with conventional oil the rings may not seat or wear in properly. It is just a guideline though as a lot of cars now come with synthetic from the factory including all the GM car based LS and LT motors.

No problem using the T5 blend. It meets Indmar specs. I've been using the T6 for several years.

But isn't T6 5W-40? Isn't that light? Isn't 15W-40 what we are suppose to use?

This is what I use, not available at any auto parts store, found was cheaper to order it then from the dealer.

Yes yes it is, stop looking behind the curtains....

The difference in the engine oil numbers is Cold/Hot viscosity.

The engine doesn't run cold for very long unless you run in really cold waters a lot. So the 5 isn't as important as the 40.

Now I am not telling you to use 5 instead of 15, or that its ok. Not my place to do that.

I will say how ever that in my Diesels it cals for 15/40 and even in the winter when its harder for a diesel to warm right up we always used 5/40 because its easier on the engine during starting.

If I could find synthetic 15/40 at a reasonable price I would use it. I haven't found it in my area. So I have always used the 5/40 and not had an issue.

Rotella T6 is also JASO MA rated for motorcycle wet clutch applications. I will use it in my jet ski when next oil change. Yes I admit I own one but at least it's a wake model.
