View Full Version : Steering wheel alignment

took the boat out today and noticed that my steering wheel is no longer aligned like it was.

When the boat is going straight, the Roo's head is pointed towards the 9:00 position (two spokes on wheel are vertical).

How do you align the wheel/rudder?

I adjusted my steering wheel with the 6 bolts on my wheel

Really? I would never have thought that was an option.

I was thinking more that the rudder had to be adjusted once the wheel was held in the desired position.

Tell me more bout this...

is there a threaded hole pattern rotated every 90 degrees, or is there a series of circular slots in the mounting plate under the steering wheel?

6 Allen heads on the steering wheel staring at you, remove, rotate, reinstall.

^^ yes, I understand that.

I'd like to know what is under the wheel.

what he said , you can get six different patterns. if the wheel is off 90 degrees while going strait . I would adjust which every way three bolts.. its pretty strait forward.

Allen wrenches?

On mine I just remove the center cap, remove the nut, pull the wheel off, then install where I want it, reinstall the nut. Maybe I'm confusing my car/other boats. If it's just the little Roo guy that's in the wrong direction you pull him out and turn to where ever...

Yep. Allen wrenches.

I'd still go the other route, you can get it set exactly where you want it, not limited to every 15 or so degrees..

Perhaps my steering wheel may be different than yours.

Mine has three "spokes", and the Roo logo in the middle.

The wheel is designed so that when it is in the "boat going straight" position, two spokes are at the 3:00 and 9:00 position and the third is at the 6:00 position. The Roo's head should be pointed at 12

Presently, when my boat is going straight, good 'ole Roo's head is pointing to 9:00 and the two "horizontal" spokes are now vertical.

There are 6 screws that mount the steering wheel to something that I have yet to see.

I sure wish (and hope) it is as simple as you describe.

Dunno, how about a pic, you can do either, remove the allen screws and try adjusting it.

Or pop the center roo cap out, remove the nut, pull the steering wheel off and put it where you want it.

either way will work just fine.

is the alignment off at all speeds?

slipperyrockTKE300

it is off at all speeds.

From what has been described, sounds like a 1/4 beer job.

I'm now more curious as to what caused the misalignment. Never noticed it before until this past weekend. Wonder if grass getting caught on the rudder could do that.

Perhaps I have something loose in my rear end :)

Sorry, no photos. Boat is down the street (community RV area) and tucked in for the week.

What concerns me about that photo is the missing brake pedal. Did you take it out? I know lots of people like to just do the "cool" coast to a stop, maybe with a little turn, or even worse they just slam it into reverse while still going forward but that's a pretty big safety no-no to remove it completely.

That is a little scary!

I had to replace my brakes lines last fall. They were getting all corroded.

Now that you mention brakes-- where exactly is the emergency brake handle? Can't seem to find mine.

on the 2009 OBV there is no emergency brake handle - don't be silly.

It's actually a pedal and it's on the left side of the driver. It's just not visible in that photo.

this got me thinking....does anyone have a truck with an emergency break handle (like a car) or are they all pedals?

And if trucks are all pedals - why?

I have to say, that emergency brake handle was a god send when I lived in Pennsylvania and driving down those icy hills. Pumping that thing would keep the car moving down hill slowly and on course

Trucks have pedals because they aren't meant for drifting like cars.

Unless you're in snow.

But Clermont is probably accustomed to a different kind of flake.

Funny! :) Love it!

Is it true that people from Vancouver Stand on a deserted corner in the rain waiting for the "Walk" signal?

GM a few years ago decided to let everyone know the brake is a "parking brake", not an "emergency brake". It might be the only thing on the truck that doesn't work. You replace it and it works once till you decide to forget to release it and it's junk again.

I use mine every time I go into the store to get beer with the little kids in the truck while it's running, good safety precaution:rolleyes:

Yup, I use it when I leave the truck running in the garage and take a nap too.
