View Full Version : Hello, My name is Mike and I have a truck buying obsession.

Well I went and bought another truck.
Those who have been around prolly had bets on how long the F150 would last.
Those who have been around know I have always been a Ford guy.
Things are changing though..

The F150 wasn't cutting it for me, loved things on it, hated things on it. For me its all about the Hate things that forced it out of my stable.

Basically in my mind, and experience with my F150 it was inadequate to tow my Mojo and haul all my gear. I tried Roadmaster Active suspension, I tried Air bags, it always wanted to sag when loaded up.
Also the 1/2 ton rear end would just get man handled around corners. Chewing my tires up, you could feel the boat shoving the truck through corners. My trailer brakes wore down this past summer, and I started noticing the truck was getting really hard to stop when pulling the boat. I would really have to stand on it to make it stop. For me, that's a no deal man. In my 1 Ton I would take the boat with no brakes down the LBC mountains and have no issues at all. So anyhow out with the Ford, in with RAM.

I have been watching Ram for several years, lerking in the back ground keeping tabs on the changes.

14 was a HUGE year for the 2500 series, it got the 1 ton chassis, and new interior upgrades. Also it picked up HID lights, Air Ride rear suspension and 5 link rear suspension. All notable awesome upgrades.

I should have bought one last year but my Ford brand Loyalty was too strong still. Now I have put my Ford banner down, Looked at each of the big 3 and this is where I decided to go.

14 Ram 2500 Laramie Long Bed.

Price was killer, I got 12K off sticker, plus 5K extra for Intel. With my F150 being a Wash trade in. i walked away with an equal deal to my F150 last year. Can complain about that. Only down side is my insurance went up lol. Not too much but 3/4 Ton costs more.

My favorite options, other then 1 Ton Chassis, new interior is HID, once you have HID you just can't go back. LED full lighting. Turn signals, rear taillights, mirrors, entry, on all door panels. Also Auto Leveling Suspension. No more Sag. I also really like 5 link rear suspension. Lastly the Alpine 10 speaker surround sound, wow its actually really impressive. I had the Sony Premium with Sub in the F150, this blows it away.

It has all the big options you would expect in a Laramie trimmed truck.

Last night I spent the better part of my night getting....wait for it.... MODS!!!

In the mail as we speak,
Amp Power Side Steps
Weather Tech Floor Mats, front and rear
Red Rug full liner
Low Pro Soft Roll Up Tonnaoe cover
Working out a deal to get the windows tinted.

Well here she is,

Silver bullet. <yea like my favorite Boat beer> LOL

crappy dealer pics, I will update after upgrades are in.

I wish dodge made a full size SUV. Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, Excursion sized rigs. A 3/4 ton Cummins powered suburban sized dodge would be the shizzle.

Looked at a Chrysler Aspen (Hemi) before going the Lincoln route but not sure that one counts as full size.

A Cummins sized SUV would definitely be interesting. Knowing Dodge/Chrysler's approach to styling and power it would definitely be badazz.

Ok, back to the issue here. Silver? Come on Mike - the boat is white and gray. You mix those together I'm pretty sure you don't get silver.

And I would like to quote you from not too long ago "Once you go 1-ton, it's hard to go back to 1/2 ton" hehehe. Words to live by.

Yes your exactly right on the 1-ton part.

Silver, yes, its not like I had a lot of options. It was the ONLY new 14 left over they had.

Silver is not bad, its a great base to work from. It hides scratches well, doesn't show dirt as much as black or charcoal.

Plus its a great platform to buy the next boat down the line. Everything goes with Silver.

I am thinking of having the fender flares and lower door panels painted charcoal gray to match the boat.

Honestly I don't think its any more dramatic of a difference with the boat then Black was lol.

Level and tires in 4 months tops I'd say, good looking truck Mike

HAHA I wish..Ok maybe Level..LOL

Seriously though I will have to roll the stock wheels and tires for a bit. I spent my wheel and tire money on the Vette. If i had known I was going to get a new truck I could have saved that and used it here.

We are doing some pretty major home changes right now, and all that was paid in cash. I will post up some pics when its done.

The last week I have had to move everything out of the house. All that's left is the master bedroom, sofa, chair, TV and stereo system. Next I had to remove all the base boards. Now she wants to change all the base boards, window sills, and door frames to white as an accent color to the house.

As long as this doesn't cut into my boating time LOL.

We are finally getting rid of all the carpet. Getting new floors installed. Also Claudia got all new furniture, new sofa, chair, dinning table and chairs.

New floors are going in the living room, dinning room, hall, and all 3 bedrooms.

Most don't realize how much cash I actually use for things, only thing I finance is the house, boat and truck. Everything else is cash but, we still put 1K a month away in savings plus 10% income in retirement stuff.

Its mainly because we have no kids, we are trying to change that. Just hasn't worked out yet. Practice is fun..

Yes, yes and yes.

Actually I've only lifted one truck myself.
Bought this one lifted. I'd probably just level the next one if it came stock.

Funny how when cruising down the highway people tend to get out of your way though and rarely are daring enough to cut in front of you.

mmandley

I've never actually Lifted a truck as to what most consider a Lift.

I level all my trucks, this is simply adding a spacer in the spring tower.

Other wise my other trucks are came from the factory with the lift they have.

Generally people lift them, only use them on the streets and this is because they want to big tires to fit and not rub, looks, and well the general reason we love big stereos LOL.

My Jeep has 5" of lift and 35" tires because it makes it a more capable rock crawler adding ground clearance and increased tire size that actually gets used wheeling.

Most trucks get lifted for looks. Don't get me wrong, big wheels and tires look awesome on big trucks. But aside from adding more ground clearance, a lot of these trucks aren't doing themselves any favors because they're going with plus sized wheels and actually decreasing the potential sidewall height on the tires. So yes, it's a benefit to get the bigger contact patch from going with the wider tire, but when you have less sidewall, that limits the amount that you can increase your contact patch by airing down your tires for offroad. (airing down makes the contact patch even bigger and less PSI makes it so the tires can morph and grab better. I run my Jeep at 7psi on beadlocks wheels with 35x12.50x15" tires. I've got enough offset to barely clear my grand cherokee dual piston brake calipers.

Of course most the wheelin' around here is through the rocks and trees, so a big truck is all but useless because it's way too big to navigate through tight stuff. They are really only useful off-road in mud and sand and snow (where their power is sometimes helpful as well)

So, the practical reasons to lift are:
1) to raise the rig enough to fit bigger tires for increased ground clearance of the axles offroading.
2) to get a slightly better approach and departure angle

In reality, most the time it's for aesthetics. (and reduced gas mileage from increased un-sprung weight and increased wind resistance)

That said, Mike, your truck dwarfs those stock tires. I think you need some aesthetics and look forward to seeing some plus sized wheels and tires on your rig, even if it never leaves the pavement. Because regardless of whether it adds ANY capability or not, and regardless of whether the truck every gets used offroad, I will give you that a lifted truck with big tires just looks "right" and is downright badass.

I now understand why people raise their trucks and I do see a practical use for it.

Yesterday I tried launching my boat from the ramps my subdivision owns.

I have Ford Ranger 4 x 4, and even with the tail pipe partially submerged, my boat was about 4" above the surface of the water.

Had I had a raised big truck like some of you, that boat would have been in.

Stacy - in case you see this.....I launched from the Hull Road ramp. All canals and little lakes on the chain are usable. You can now go from Lake Louisa State Park all the way up to Cherry Lake and get into all the other little lakes that are connect by canal.

The mouth of the canal (south of Hull Rd) feeding directly into lake Louisa is 5 feet deep - this is where you and I found that this was the shallowest area -and still is.

The first crew cab truck 06 F350 was a long bed. So I got used to it.
Once we startedgoing to Lake Billy all the time we used about 6ft and that left enough room for Oso.

Went to F150 with 6.5 ft and we had to load the boat with gear. I personally only want water gear in the boat.

Also for myself and Claudia we prefer the look of a LB vs SB on a super crew

I was torn over the Plug and Play or hard wired steps. I choose the Hard wired version. Mainly because I didn't want a plug and ply on my OBDII port.

I agree on the wheels and tires needing an update. I just can swallow the fact I am tossing 4 brand new tires and that actually decent tires. They do look a little narrow under the truck but even the 34-35 would only be 1 inch wider. I could get new rims but I want to step up to 20s, so that means tires and rims.

Here is the most recent pic, got the tint done.
Just picked up the boat from AWS, Yes the rear is sagging. Thats the LOAD ME UP position. When I start the truck it auto levels. I can also drop the bed to 30 inches to allow easier loading of things in the bed. Pretty sweet.

Mine were the 17" that was the standard in 13, so they really looked tiny. Then in 14 you could get 18 and 20's like yours that are a big upgrade in the looks department. So how do you like the air suspension and coils so far?

I like them a lot, I will have to look but I think its either Coil, or Bags but not a combo, I could be wrong though.

So fare driving it empty it feels a lot like the Leafs in my F350s, but once I dropped the boat on her, the rear felt much firmer. Not a bad firm just real firm. In the last F350 I added the Air Bags and it had a similar firm feeling.

The Air Suspension is a trip though, backed up to the boat, hit the Alt Ride Height and it dropped down, loaded the boat, started the truck and it air its self right up.

I think you might need a long load permit if you trailer on the interstate :)

.

Yep was reading on the Cummins forum, the air suspension has an airspring instead of the traditional coil.

My 13 still has the old school leaf spings and can beat you up on expansion joints so i ride around with 500 lbs of sand in the truck. Funny even my truck needs ballast....

Couple updates. Close to 2K miles already. Each fill up has netted me 18-19mpg <hand calculated> and this included a 40 mile pull with the boat on each tank.

This is actually droping the boat off at Exile a couple weeks ago. Boat is back home now. Still haven't got my winter upgrades done. Maybe Monday? IDK lol.

I had an Excursion Ecoboost rental this week and was less than impressed; 16.8 mpg over 500 all highway miles, not towing. The Ford interior is really toy-ish too. Nice move on going to Dodge!

I'll stick with my diesel Jeep, lol
