View Full Version : Metal Flake or No Metal Flake - Help

I have a week before I need to decide if I want metal flake in the main panel. My boat will have a white bottom, red main panel and a black stripe.

These two boats demonstrate the red main panel with and without metal flake. My last boat did not have metal flake. However, the more I look at the pics, the more it's growing on me.

Thoughts / opinions - metal flake or no metal flake in the red main panel.

1 vote for the metal flake! Congrats on the boat.

I'm leaning in that direction Kurt. The local dealer doesn't have any boats in the showroom with metal flake. It's hard to choose based upon the pics, thus I'm soliciting current Moomba boat owners opinions.
Thanks!

Metal Flake is total WIN. Love it. Can't get enough of it.

metalflake is nice but for me, it would all boil down to what the cost is and your expected length of time to own the boat. for a grand and keeping the boat for 5+years, go for it. for a couple grand and boat is gone/upgraded in 2-3years, roi isn't there and probably won't see 2k more than comparable boat w/o it.

good luck and looks to be a nice boat.

It would be metal flake for me.

My normal instinct is go for the Flake, I think they look so nice.

Now that I have owned 2 boats, 1 light, 1 dark, and had some issues with the Gell, I have a little different thought process.

If I was to buy one, and plan to trade it off in a couple years, you buy whats Trending and whats Hot in the market, in this case Flake it.

If I was planning on keeping her for a while, I would want the Flake but not a whole side panel.

My reasons, its extremely hard to do any gell repairs and make the flake match. Since owning the Mojo 2x now I have had rub rail crack repairs, and these have to be drawn down into the side of the boat and blended. Its hard enough to blend in a dark color Grey and make it invisible to the eye. If I had metal flake it would be even harder.

If it was my boat I would get the stripes done in Flake, this way I have the eye catching flash of the flake yet the longer term stability of the solids.

Its a great color combo you picked.

I love the flake but, just as before, it is a trend that will go away again. The stripes are a great idea.

My 98 is mostly all metal flake and it is sharp and I would always go to metal flake if I had an option as it stands out from the rest of the boats. Repairs would be more difficult. The sun reflecting off the water onto the hull makes a very interesting look.

Judging by the pictures, you may be set on red as your main color... But from my experience if you're looking for a good compromise between flake and non-flake, you should take a look at Moomba's black flake. It's not nearly as pronounced as the other colors but still looks awesome when the light hits it. Just my $.02

Completely agree - my 2001 has a very subtle gold metal flake over the yellow. It just adds that pop that a plain color does not. I sat side by side with another yellow LSV and his looked/felt pretty boring by comparison.

Bet the flake style will not fade anytime soon.

Metal Flake Reminds me of a Bass Boat. With that being said. I was at the dealer a few weeks ago and the Red and the Purple with metal flake are pretty bad ass. So sorry I'm no help.

Load the boat with hot girls if you don't want to be the boring boat.

Metal flake in gel coat is really hard to repair. Almost impossible to repair without being able to see the repair.

I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to see a couple boats with and without red metal flake. I will also finalize the order for a mid-April delivery.

I understand repairing metal flake can be a challenge. How often do Moomba boats have gel coat repair issues? I never had an issue with my Tige 24V.

Thanks again for all the input. I'm appreciative:)

Metal flake isn't available in the black strip on the 15 Mojo. Do Moomba boats have gel coat issues?

How often do Moomba boats have gel coat repair issues?

I feel it is 80% luck and 20% skill. I've had my 98 Mobius metalflake for 14 years without any damage My previous boat was a 79 Glastron Carlson metalflake for 11 years without damage. Considering the Mobius doesn't have a decent reverse control and crappy docks I have come upon, I would say there was some luck involved.

Thats a figurative question.

Do they have normal issues? No
Have I seen them from the factory with issues? Yes

My first boat I never had a gell repair issue at all, factory fault or mine.

Mojo we have had several issues, from prop damage, storm impact damage, and hair line crack repairs.

Where they the Factories fault? No

But its was unexpected. All the gell work we have had done so fare was due to a big wind storm that bent 2 anchors on our boat, causing it to slam into the side of our house boat.

The point being you never know when damage can occur, no one plans on it, just plan for it.

Heres our bent anchor, it put up a hell of a fight.

Metal flake is the hot thing right now. If you are only going to keep your boat for a few years, then go for it. But if you plan on keeping your boat long term, which I do, in five years when its no longer the hot thing, your boat will look dated. Just my thought.

Picked up the boat yesterday. Put three and a half hours on the motor today. We're looking forward to surfing, wake boarding and skiing after the breaking period:o

Looks great. Hard to appreciate the flake in the pictures but I'm sure it really pops in person.
