View Full Version : Designing an Auxillary reversible pump setup.

Okay, so I've been thinking about adding a single Johnson reversible pump to my boat to function as a "auxillary" pump. It'd be something that would fill up misc bags that I might place on the seat, floor, etc. . It would also function as a pump that I could flip on and suck water out of any areas like the front locker that collected water. It would also have an adapter to put a spray nozzle on it to hose out anything that might need it. Or could also be used with a hose nozzle for potential water fights against the kids or other boats!

Similar to the idea of the "super sac'r" but I'm not a fan of the stupid fly high connections any more than necessary.

I've thought about the pump in a locker with a length of hose on it. Maybe a little ball valve on the end to help avoid messy overflow when the pump's off and I disconnect it from whatever.

So I'm thinking hose nozzle.

Maybe a shutoff valve near the end of the hose length to keep messes to a minimum:

Certainly I could make use of actual hose quick connects rather than the unreliable fly high connections:

Of course I'd need the ability to have a fly high connection, but maybe I could have that on the end of a quick connect?

So, give me your thoughts about how you'd suggest plumbing this. If I did a fixed length of hose with the ability to swap out attachments, I'd want to make sure that the hose was accessible from somewhere that wouldn't ultimately need a bag put on top of it. It'd be pretty silly to have the setup under the rear corner seat and then want to put a bag on top of that seat cushion, blocking the access to the hose!

I'm kind of thinking of something like this:

Section 1 (pump to seat-base) - Pump -> hose -> shutoff Valve -> Female Quick connect stubbed through seat-base wall

Section 2 (hose assembly) - Male quick connect -> ballast hose -> shutoff valve -> female quick connect

Attachment a. Male quick connect -> Fly high adapter

Attachment b. Male quick connect -> twist sprayer nozzle

Mount the pump wherever. Mount the stubbed connector wherever convenient. Keep the coil of hose and attachments in the Port rear corner under-seat storage.

Wait, what? You're a aerator pump guy!

You don't need a shutoff, the pump does that.

I had a reversible in my last boat. I really can have BOTH on this one! LOL.

I was really thinking of just having something I could close to manage the excess water in the hose line. Kind of like having a shutoff valve at the end of your garden hose.

The idea being that when the pump was off, I could close the valve before the quick connect to keep the water that's between the hose the the stubbed quick connect from running onto the floor. Maybe that's overkill and overcomplicating things.

Likewise, the thought of being able to shutoff at the end of the hose to change attachments without making a mess. Probably unnecessary?

I think I'd still want a shutoff somewhere. When I had my ballast puppy, my bag would passively fill despite the fact that my pump was turned off, probably because the impeller was wearing out... I wouldn't want it passively filling to a open port spilling water onto my floor.

The more I think about it, I've decided that I wouldn't go with any of the brass quick connect fittings that look like they belong on a garden hose. I'd just use flow rite fittings, since I already have a ton of them laying around

And a couple of these would come in handy:

Don't waste your money on the plugs, I tried them and they leak .
