I am going to replace the impeller on my boat that I recently boat used. I need to know how to go about this, do you use a pair of needle nose pliers and grab around one of the rubber fins on the impeller or is there another way to go about this. Thanks alot for the help.

I forgot to say my boat is an 04' Outback Direct Drive.

A search of the posts would give you this one:

I take needle nose pliers and stick one side in the brass end of the impeller and the other in between two fins and then just pull and wiggle it like hell!

You can also use two screwdrivers. Stick them in between the blades on opposite sides of the impeller and gently pry both sides at the same time. Mine came right out using this method and it shouldn't tear the blades. You can use it as an emergency spare.

Also, be careful not to apply too much torque to those 4 lil' screws. You can strip the threads out of the holes or twist the head of the machine screw off.

Ed’s suggestion works like a charm. I have found that Aero Kroil from http://kanolabs.com/ works better then WD-40.

Good luck, E

What I found works best is two paint can openers from your hardware store. They do not damage the impeller. I pull mine every winter and put a little dish soap in a ziplock bag. Mine is good for about 3 seasons this way with about 50 hours a season.

WHere would the impeller housing be on my 99 outback LS?

THanks,

On the lower front of the engine right off the drive shaft. About 4 inches behind the ski pylon as the pylon gets in the way a bit when getting the screws out. There's an "O" ring on the front cover and I can't remember if the replacement impeller comes with a new "O" ring.

Anyone else have problems when pulling the impeller? With 100 hours and 1.5 seasons on it, I spent at least and hour trying to pull mine with needle nose pliers and locking pliers with no success. So I pulled the housing and it still took a couple of hard pulls before it slipped out and I did more damage to the impellor while pulling it than it took under operation.

While pulling I did try turning over the engine and it did not help much. I did not try the wd-40 or anything else, does the wd-40 make it hard to hold on to the impellor with the pliers? It seams to me that the pliers would slip on the wd-40 and you would not be able to get a grip to pull it out?
