Last winter was pretty hard on the Supra having it just live under the cover. So we decided to throw down and get a carport for the XLV.

I figured go big or go home, so made it as big as I could! 41' long x 21' wide with 12' tall sidewalls.

How they get it here:

Damn they are fast. I helped tear down and then rebuild one with a 14ft roof but not near as long as yours. If you're unlucky enough to fall off you not only get to worry about what you're going to break when you hit the ground but also where your body will be cut in half from one of those panels sliding off and coming down like a guillotine. Fun stuff!

Why am I thinking you were going clear to the fence?

I decided to utilize the existing shed/house and make my 1/2 sidewall go down further.

Because I am. It'll be the only way to back the XLV straight in through the double gates and under 1/2 the cover.

Back fence... ?

Did you have to pull a permit for that? That is bigger than a lot of the houses in the inner city around here.

Oh, the longest they have on the online calculator is 41'. The bases are 20' each. A person could have certainly done one that was longer but at some point you run out of money or land.

Well, it falls under that gray area of a "temporary structure". they have rules for sheds and stuff, but this doesn't fit into that category. My neighbor is fine with the lack of setback. so that's nice.

They built it from start to finish in under 5 hours. three man crew.

Great investment to protect the XLV. Heck you could charge Berg and store his boat under there too.

That's awesome!! Thinking of doing this myself, do you mind saying what that cost with the height and 1/2 sides?

Keep in mind that mine's pretty darned big. 41L x 21w x 12h (with another 2 to 3 feet of height in the roof). With 8.5% sales tax, we were just under $5k all in. I got 4 of the Auger anchors and a few extra roof braces.

I still question if I got it "too tall", because obviously the rain could come in the front or back.

There's a really cool calculator at www.carport.com

But they just farm it out to a local distributor. That said, everyone that sells these things has the same pricing structure.

Thanks! Ya I would definitely want to get tall enough that I wouldn't have to put the tower down and the sides at least half way if not 3/4. It looks good man!

In Pierce County of the "temp" structure is in the same place when they redue there overhead pictures they send out a notice for fine.

Looking good but dang that is big. Going to rent out space? Good thing it is a gray area up there in Eugene someone turned in 31 carports and the owners now have to remove them.

Is this the website that you used? That's a good website, thanks. I'm interested to see it with the boat in there.

I mean temp as in 'not permanent'.

This was the county definition I was referring to:

“Temporary structure” means a structure that does not have a permanent foundation, that involves no grading or site improvements, and that, when removed, results in no physical alteration of the site. it's also channeled and sloped so that the rainwater is contained on site.

Well, I used that website to design it. but I ultimately ordered from another dealer that was able to get me shorter lead time. as it was, I had to wait 7 weeks which was painful.

Is storage outrageous out there? $5k at $400/month is 12.5 months of storage. Should be like 3 years worth of winter off site storage. I know you can't work on your boat off site, or sit in it and crack cold ones all winter, but wow! $5k is 1/12 of a down payment on a reallllly nice place here in KC. We have a bunch of old limestone caves that a ton of people store their boats in. They have been fitted to control humidity at 30% ish and the temp stays a balmy 52 degrees year round. $250 gets you a contract from Oct. through March.

Yes - storage fees up here are retarded. A 12x30 enclosed for example is over $300/mo. A covered RV lot type storage, if you can even find an empty spot, would run around $130-170 a month depending on length.

Funny thing is - every storage lot is FULL too. I've been daydreaming about picking up a few acres zoned mixed use commercial and going into business. It can take 3+ years though for permitting, engineering spec/approval, insurance, etc. before you can even break ground.

I'm kinda confused on the 1/12th thing. What do you get in KC for $60k?

Anyway, mine is 41x21. it's not solely for the boat obviously or I would have built it a LOT smaller. at most, the boat will take up 1/3 of the space.

This is my previous solution and it didn't accommodate the boat:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-RAZezWx9w1k/VD8X0XrDD9I/AAAAAAAAUlA/VIUfrUcNcy0/s800/20141015_175145.jpg

Like you said, I can't work on my boat when it's stored off site.

Because this is also freeing up storage space (the other 2/3 of it), it's ultimately going to allow me to move the items I had parked in the 3rd bay of my garage out there, and will mean that we'll be able to soon park my wife's truck in the 3rd bay. So it's like getting another garage spot because we can take the things out of there.

When i was having my house built back in 2001, it cost me $5k to have the 3rd bay added on to the floorplan... I'm getting about 4x that much space this time.

Maybe it doesn't pencil out 100%. But I'm happy with it.

Trayson,
Looks good. I bought the 41 x 21 x 12 high last fall. Got it totally enclosed with a 10 x 10 roll up door. I really like not having to lower the tower anymore. Also poured a slab for it. I'm in a rural area so didn't have to worry about the neighbors. I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

It would be 1/12 of a down payment, on a really nice place lol. I do like the carport option, as my Dmax won't fit in the garage at all. Fortunately the LSV does, just barely. I lucked out big time as it saves a ton of headache. Our HOA won't allow any external structures what so ever, and their super picky about it. THEY WILL COME AFTER YOU!

In Pierce County is the same difference. When I was doing permitting work there was a bunch of people there with the same type of strictures with notices and had to apply for permits. It was insane.
