I'd like to know how the Outback V works for wake surfing? We have an I/O now and the lake we're on has a 20' limit.

one word: AWESOME

especially the 2009 and newer.

For a 20' boat, I don't think you can go wrong with the OBV. With just a few upgrades (added ballast) you can have a very nice surf wave. We have only had our OBV for 1.5 seasons and just love it!!!

any thoughts on the mondo?

I've seen some nice looking 07 & 08 for sale. Is there something about the newer models that make them more desirable? And what sort of ballast modifications are we talking about? Hopefully not exposed bags?

No, no exposed bags. Assuming the boat already has the GIII ballast plumbed I was just talking about upgrading to larger bags which is about a 10 minute process.

The Mondo looks really nice, but the extra 6 inches could be a deal breaker due to lake restrictions.

That sounds like the type of modification I can handle. What size is the stock bag and what size would the new ones be for this modification? Thanks

unless the newer models have changed, the stock rears are 400 ea and 400 in the front.

For a really decent wave, you just need (as a minimum) 750 sacs in the rear and the stock 400 in the front...and of course a wakeplate.

Many have put more weight upfront, but In my opinion it is not necessary.

You asked:

"I've seen some nice looking 07 & 08 for sale. Is there something about the newer models that make them more desirable?"

The 07 and 08 OBV's are not under 20' . without the platform they are 20' 8".

The 2009+ OBV's are about 19' 11"

The stock GIII ballast has the 400# bags in each of the rear lockers and a 400# in the storage locker in the bow (1200# total). I have upgraded to the 750# sacs in each of the lockers as well as the 650# IBS under the bow seats and I'm very happy with that wave (2550# total). You could probably add one or more sacs under the seats (assuming you want no sacs on the floor) but that pretty much takes up all your storage.

Anyone on here added a Flow to an OBV yet? Look forward to reviews of that wave...

+1 on that........I've been close to pulling the trigger but really want to see how well it works before dropping $1300.

Thanks for the clarification, that's the sort of mistake that would cost me dearly. Thanks

Have you seen some of the pics from 2015?

We used a flow during the photo shoot and thought it really helped out the wave on the OBV.

Lorrain County huh? My family is from Bay Village. Lived on Lake Rd. - 2 houses down from Sam Shepard and right next to Huntington Park.

Yes, I have seen some of those pics and I'm sure they look great for the brochures (like that cool overhead shot on the Moomba site), but they don't really get you a great view of the wave. If you have seen some good ones please do share.

I work in Avon, just south of the tracks. I stop at Huntington for lunch on nice summer days and think about boating. Any issues with your 09?

slipperyrockTKE300

I did have a cracked exhaust manifold.

ended up replacing both for about $1600

k42
11-20-2014, 11:24 PM
I'm sure that kind of sucked. Probably a bad casting, I'm guessing it's a cast iron manifold. Did you lose much time and have you heard of any others with the same problem?

slipperyrockTKE300
11-21-2014, 06:28 AM
I agree - bad casting. a year out of warranty.

the service place had the boat for two weeks

to my knowledge no one else on these forums with a NGOBV (new generation OBV - a term coined by Skiers Choice Marketing in 2008 ) has reported the same issue.

But I would bet there are others out there.

Go Steelers!

OBV has a nice surf wake. 750 rear 400 center IBS just like mike. 3 or 4 people in boat. I run about 9.5 mphs with wake plate at 1/2. What speed is everyone else running. I ride a hyperlite broadcast, rides slow. (i know i need to upgrade)

mikenehrkorn
11-21-2014, 08:28 PM
I run about 10.5

slipperyrockTKE300
11-22-2014, 08:53 AM
stargazer is always set for 10.0

wakeplate 100%

750 in rears

400 in front

usually 3-4 people

very shallow lakes - typically 6 to 12 feet deep

Not a ton of video of the wave, but still a cool video (yes, I am biased).

Drew,
Cool Home Movie :p thanks for posting!

So was it listing a little bit, or was that just from the "people" weight? Couple of shots there looks like it was leaning a little to the surf side.

wolfeman131
11-24-2014, 01:47 PM
I can't remember exactly. They didn't give us much time to set up the boat. We were on the dock at 5:15am and immediately in the boat, racing to a location and then shooting started.

If I remember correctly, we filled both sides 100%, wakeplate up, speed was around 10 mph, flow deployed and people on the surf side. I may have dumped a little weight out of the non-surf side, but just not sure. They kept yelling at me to "stop messing around in the boat and looking at the wave!"

Do you recall if that was stock ballast or were you using larger bags? And probably no IBS, correct?

wolfeman131
11-24-2014, 03:10 PM
stock, no IBS

Pretty nice looking wave with only 1200# total in the boat. Makes me want to see the Flow in action with 750s in the rear along with the stock and IBS in the front even more.

Mikenehrkorn,
I think you said above you have an IBS in your Outback V? Which bag did you use, does it fill completely?

Thanks, Jeff

mikenehrkorn
12-01-2014, 09:47 AM
Yes, I have the 650# IBS (Fly High W711). Like many others, I used the vent from the center sac to fill/empty and the install was very easy.

It seems to fill almost fully, but it can pop the seats and/or the cup holders. :)

When i upgraded my rears to 750s. I tossed the 400s up in the bow. One in each leg extending back under the dash. It works our perfect. Run a tee off the vent line of the center ballast to the bags then a tee for the vent line in the nose. Fills and drains without issue. Maybe a few pounds less than ibs.
