View Full Version : Floor covering project

A buddy of mine recently added a deckadence floor covering to his boat and it is beautiful. I was toying with the idea of ordering the same thing for my boat but started looking around for other options. I started looking for spaghetti mat like the mat under my playpen ballast bag from the factory.

After a few Google and Amazon searches miners moss started showing up in the results. If you are not familiar with miners moss it is the open weave PVC mat used by miners to catch fine gold. I found a source (utopia tools) that had a grey color to match my boat and ordered 2 rolls of 3'x5'. Luckily the main cabin area in my XLV is exactly 3' so this size worked well. I also ordered Goop marine UV stable adhesive in clear to glue the seams where I would have to piece sections together.

Link added by moderator: http://www.utopiatools.com/Miners-Moss-Grey-60-X36-p/utgpmgrey60x36.htm

I made a template with paper from Lowes.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/13/0d35dd5e5372c9e5807167ca9d104e6c.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/13/5f2a20904f0deeee17ad350e82ecd703.jpg

Used template to cut material and glued seams.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/13/8f01c8a12a02a77f52b6610be33ba880.jpg

The. I dropped in the boat. Sorry for low light pics. I have to say it looks really good in the boat. Very happy with the result. I will test it out for a while and then decide if I want to remove the old carpet.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/13/117707a660d5d7f1987cc9ae1f4a67f7.jpg

How does it feel under your feet? Looks like it might be coarse and irritating.

And if you don't mind sharing, how much was the product?

The material is fairly soft and squishy so it is pretty comf (at least to me). Certainly softer than the mat under my playpen ballast bag that was there from the factory.

I paid $35 per roll. I needed 2 = $70
Goop UV stable clear adhesive - $7
Paper from Lowes - $9

Total cost - $86 plus tax

Here is a video demonstrations of Deckadence which gave me the idea of trying miners moss. The miners handles water the same way.http://youtu.be/DuNhm0wE4Kk

Looks great. Tige does something similar on their new rigs as well. Is this stuff heavy enough to just sit in place? I've never seen it in person. I think you may want to remove the carpet for fear it will harbor water under there? Just thinking out loud. It looks nice.

I believe it will stay put when trailered. I'll find out soon.

I plan to use it a few times and if I still like it I will likely pull the carpet out.

I glued the inside edges together, let it dry, and then put some more glue on the bottom seam.

Here is what Deckadence recommends. I found the video after I glued mine together.

Would you even need to pull the carpet? It seems to be porous enough that the carpet would still dry though just slightly slower.

The martial will trap the dirt, chips, ect... But, it is designed to release anything in the material with a strong water flow. Only a trial run will tell.

I have rubbed dirt, clay, and potato chips into a sample and it all washes out easily.

The mat is just drop in so I can pull it out of the boat and wash with a hose on the driveway. It would be very hard to clean if the mat was not removable.

I will be following your updates next season, but it sounds like a great idea.....relatively low cost, easy installation (assuming no carpet removal) and it looks great.

The carpet in my '13 is only 1.5 seasons old and it already looks like crap so I will probably be looking for an alternative sooner rather than later.

Sure, but doesn't carpet trap all of this too? The benefit is that you could hose this stuff clean and it won't stain.

We rode in a new Tige this summer that had the deckadence flooring (link (http://marineflooring.net/)). It was a little bit "tickly" on the feet but not scratchy and overall it is more spongy so it's softer to stand on. I was so impressed with it that I started searching and found out it ain't cheap. Also, I think they decided to only sell OEM. To my eyes this looks to be about the same stuff. For $100 I'm in. Good find.

Looks good. I would definitely remove your carpet though or all the dirt and grime will soak through and sit on it. Would expect moisture to stay as well so will get pretty nasty. I know Decadence cuts their edges at an angle around the boarder so it fits snug against the sides and not quite sure of the thickness of the miners moss vs. decadence but the price certainly has a variance.
Would imagine sending the template to decadence for a mat would be 10x the price although you can get custom colors, logos, and designs built in from them.
Description of DMF from their website " a combination of aerated rubber, resins, PVC treated with UV inhibitors and a secret recipe that contributes to the durability and longevity of product". Who knows, maybe its the same stuff as miners moss?

For me it's a no brainer and only way to go on my next boat. Carpet looks like crap after 6months, seadek or similar is permanent, is prone to chips and wear and will trap dirt around edges, decadence is expensive but can remove for cleaning, soft, everything flows through it and you can rinse off the bare floor. Expensive or not, substitute or not, I'm doing the toss in weave/sponge floor next go round.

Boonejeepin

I believe Deckadence is 14 mm w the rubberized anti slip stuff adhered to the bottom.

The miners moss I used is 10mm. If one wanted to add the rubber anti slip material it should be easy to add with a light coat of aerosol 3m adhesive on the bottom of the miners moss or directly on the rubber anti slip material. Would certainly want to keep the adhesive light enough to not close off the open weave which would then trap the water.

I'll keep everyone posted. I am in SoCal so I will be taking the boat out again soon.

Perfect combination right there. Test out the integrity of the glue.

My brother spilled a rather large glass of Crown Royal on my carpet during a night surf this year. Kind of forgot about it until a clean up later at home. Hit it with the hose and it foamed up like crazy for too long. Carpet glue never let go though.

I have it neatly rolled in the garage..... I could mail it to you or better yet make a duplicate that is not made of 10 pieces taped together.. It's nothing too special and you would want to verify that it fits well in your boat before cutting any material. May save you a little time.

I could include a piece of the scrap miners moss that I used so you can check out the material.

hmmm... might be interesting to compare with the samples that I ordered for the Supra. I'm pretty sure they're deckadance. It was an 'impluse' buy to get the samples. $9 for samples is kinda stupid, but I paid it.

Hang onto the templates. The flooring isn't all that high on the priority list so far... LOTS of projects before that.

would if be possible embed snaps into the minors moss or does it just free float on the floor. if it would not have snaps do you think it would slide around on a finished floor

This looks like the stuff they are using in the new MC - they use it over hard body - no carpet underneath.

The biggest concern with any product not designed for continuous outdoor use is UV Resistance. The sun is a harsh mistress. I would think that the carpet underneath would stay wet much longer. The best attack on that, aside from removing it, would be to leave the boat in the sun to dry out - but then the UV thing comes back to bite you.

I recently acquired a 2009 MC 197 and it came with a rubber backed rug with a really interesting color scheme and logo. That thing was heavy (almost like a bed liner) and took forever to dry out and kept the carpet below it indefinitely wet. Stopped using that after one use.

I know snaps can be placed in deckadence but not sure about the miners moss. I plan to allow it to just sit on the floor. I believe it will stay in place since it is wall to wall in the boat.

I plan to bond some rubber anti slip to the bottom with a 3M spray adhesive made for rubber and plastic. Of course the anti slip has to be an open type material as to not hold water. Not sure it is needed but would help with any bunching or slip, especially if I like it after some testing and remove the carpet.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/360x360q90/14/11/15/ca4c07efa26edfc7285588d623c8d2aa.jpg

I agree with you. UV could be the X factor. My boat is covered when not on the water or immediately after to dry for a day. So it will have some protection from UV. Miners moss is used outside with water, soil, and rock continually moving across it when gold mining so I am hoping it is at least somewhat UV stable. Fingers crossed.

To test for UV damage I'll throw a scrap in the backyard with full exposure. I'll report back after a few weeks/months if anyone is interested. I live in SoCal so it will see some sunshine but since it is fall it will be less than the summertime intensity.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/360x360q90/14/11/15/cc0824b8b9730186a695f2e173d63769.jpg

I also agree that this type of product would be best used as a stand alone flooring (no carpet). I will wait to remove my carpet until I can be certain that the miners moss will stand up to how I use my boat. In the mean time I will likely roll the miners moss up, remove from boat, and let carpet dry after each use. It will take less than a minute to remove or install the moss mat. I would hate to rip out the carpet and the find the moss to be unsatisfactory for one reason or the other.

But with a total investment <$100, I don't think I'd care even if it only lasted a few years. It would still be 1/10th the cost of seadeck

This is basically the same stuff I used back in the 90s on the cockpit floor of the carver sedan bridge I owned. Back then you had to get it from janitorial supply houses, it's been used for industrial walk off mats for over 25 years. So if you guys are interested also look at walk off mats. You can get it with or without a rubber backing. I also have a piece in my shower in my home so we don't slip and fall.

It was out in the weather 6 months of the year for about five years, structurally it held up fantastic, color wise it seemed to darken over time that no amount of hosing would get out. But like I said earlier it was exposed to the sun and weather for half the year. Using it for the interior most will cover the boat and limit its exposure. With all tha being said it was still in the boat when I sold it.

Testing the adhesive for the anti slip material. I think the key is to apply adhesive to the anti slip so the back of the miners moss does not get clogged w adhesive.

Quick update.

I decided to pull the carpet after a few trips with the new floor cover. I am very happy with it so far. It has been easy to clean up, keeps feet relatively dry as the water drains through almost immediately, stays in place while trailered, and is comfy on my feet.

Anyone want to guess what the carpet smelled like after years of bare wet feet on it? Yep, smelled like feet. Gross!

I sprayed the center aluminum panels with bedliner and will finish the fiberglass deck with something in the future. Not too concerned with it now since it is covered. I have scraped most of the old adhesive off since these pics were taken.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/17/746a91eff9c1ccee7739252780667c5c.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/17/015f6596734edac1eb1f68aec91499dd.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/17/45665963244ba5aee5f561ccb59e1c90.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/17/b3b1b7078c68099c10d5281ffdbac9bd.jpg

I would suggest going to Lowes or Home Depot so you can confirm it is rubberized and not a "foamy" material. The material that I used is a bit "foamy" and I would have preferred to use something more rubberized.

Normally located near the carpet section or sometimes in the kitchen cabinetry area sold as drawer liner.

I laminated it to the Miner's Moss by wetting the antislip with PVC glue and then placing it on the Miner's Moss as to not clog the openings in the Miners Moss.

Something like this.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/29/3f32d9e01fe1d266f820d35f3b52e38e.jpg

So, I'm curious what it looks like under the carpet on the XLV. I measured tonight and the total area is just a hair bigger than a 4x8 sheet of plywood. I'm wondering where the seams are. I would think that there'd be a small piece where it'd be a few inches shy of covering the "underseat cooler" Port section. But maybe not? And likewise another little extra piece in front of the driver's seat. I'm curious if or where the piece that covers the gas tank is seamed.

Next time you yank your miner's moss out, can you take some detailed pics so I can see where the seams might be.

Also, can you verify something else? When I look your picture here:
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/17/746a91eff9c1ccee7739252780667c5c.jpg
it definitely looks like your floor is one contiguous piece from in front of the basement storage opening, all the way to the section that extends in front of the driver's seat. I know for certain that I have two levels of flooring. The spot where the driver's feet go is a couple inches lower than the rest of the floor. So basically at the place where the curve of the seat base ends just below the capacity sticker and the gray horizontal floor trim meets the gray vertical trim that go up towards the helm. At that point, my "subfloor" stops and the driver's feet are recessed a little.

You can see the step down in this pic:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-GH9nxBiFEko/VA8vp81e1LI/AAAAAAAAUN4/2Hf-R3zM_cY/s800/20140908_201917_resized.jpg

I guess I'm trying to get a handle on how much flooring I'd have to get to do a project like yours (but probably in hydroturf). I think seeing your bare floor is going to give me about the best idea of what the XLV looks like under the carpet. (aside from the fact that I have a sunken section for the driver's feet and it appears that you don't.)

trayson
02-12-2015, 01:02 AM
Or maybe a better way to ask would be: Is the one obvious seam that goes from the back of your driver's seat to your hot tubes the ONLY seam? is the floor really just two pieces in between the seat bases?

Here's pics of mine for comparison:

Is everything above (in the pic) the obvious seam at the bottom of this pic one contiguous piece of material???

For you Trayson. My ugly floor underneath the miner's moss. I often think about cleaning it up but the thought goes away as soon as the miner's moss gets laid back down.http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/21/31c2a885f8035cf267996a6ff5a5a3e8.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/21/037bfddc35c596e0265f629587738d13.jpghttp://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/21/3568c1ed1c7b739225116f8e246a48ce.jpg

My floor looks a lot like that. I scraped glue and all the gray glue residue-- I evened it up a lot before I started putting down my hydro turf. I was worried that the hydro might not stick to the slightly uneven glue/floor residue that was still left. ha ha. I had to rip out a bit of finished hydro I had put down. It was almost impossible to rip back out. So, scrape it clean and even and shopvac the dust. Your hydro will stick fine.

No. Not enough progress to bother. I'm getting the hang of it now though. I have the grooved kind so it's very hard to bend it around much or your lines get all crooked. Large pieces are almost impossible to work with. On the other hand, vertical seams are pretty much invisible. Once I figured that out it got a lot easier to work.

Thanks for the pics. I wouldn't have guessed that the screws would be so far out on the tips of the corners and edges. Maybe that will help me find mine if needed.

I also would not have guessed that the pieces would be 2 rectangles and separate sections for beside the vdrive and in the "cooler cutout". That's good to know how they put it together.

Well Russ, my floors are actually screwed in from the SIDES. they have screws that come in from the bottom inside of the seat bases. Crazy.

I guess I didn't have to replace my carpet to find the screws.

Oh wait, I went to town with a razor knife to find where they WEREN'T in the corners, so I guess I DO have the replace my carpet! Good thing my hydroturf shows up tomorrow!

So after a couple months of running it how are you liking it? I am really considering this as an alternative to our snap in carpet for the wakeboard days.

I love it, but I've always installed it in my boats.

Spilled a full can of coke on the floor, used the same can to collect some river water and dilute it and force it into the bilge. No fuss..

So I'm really curious about this stuff and if it's still holding up. Seems like a great alternative to the other flooring options. I know I'm bringing this one back from the dead but I'm getting ready for a winter project and this minor's moss has really gotten my attention. Thoughts? Feedback?

We love it. We put it on top of the carpet this season because we wanted to try it out before ripping out the carpet, but now the carpet is coming out. The stuff is bullet proof as far as wear goes: it holds up better than carpet, is easy to clean and is so much nicer for drying out after a day on the water. "spaghetti mat" is also a good search term (commonly used around pools).

Thank you for all of the info on this! Just ordered enough for my old LSV.

Bringing this one back from the dead, I got sick of wet/stained/matted carpet in my LSV and when my neighbor said "I don't understand why they put carpet in boats", well that finally pushed me to do this...

After some research, I decided I wanted DECKadence (or Miner's Moss). Miner's moss appeared to be thinner than what I wanted so i started looking for thicker material. Jim's Marine Flooring has what they call Ultra Marine Flooring (http://www.jimsmarineflooring.com/specials/) at less than half the price of DECKadence and it already has the non-slip backing. I used his process to create a template (http://www.jimsmarineflooring.com/?portfolio=how-to-template-your-boat).

https://forum.moomba.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27588&d=1535588764
Yes the template is upside down, I used Jim's method of cutting on an angle to make the top slightly wider so it compresses. Thank god i wrote TOP on it b/c I almost cut it in the reverse...

REALLY happy I did this, feels great under feet, easy to clean, and looks so much better!

https://forum.moomba.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27589&d=1535588875

Best part is i only have one exposed seam and that is in the helm. I ordered a 4'x10' piece and Jim sent one that was more like 10'9" long and this allowed me to put the only other seam under the rear bench that covers the V-Drive!

Anyone want my template? That was the most time-consuming part.

This is really nice stuff and you did a pretty credible job here. I think you will see some folks asking for your template and any tips you can offer. I hope you consider posting your work/process on the wake garage site. Those guys are incredible and very helpful over there.

Looks great. I got a few samples from Jim last year but never pulled the trigger. I think this is the year. What did you do about the ski locker in the floor? It sounds like you basically have one solid piece from bow to stern?

2 other questions.... What color did you go with and what did you do with the carpet that covers the bench?

On ours, we just cover the door with one continuous piece like Leebo is showing. It's not much of a hassle to just pull it back when we need to get in there. For us this is only once at the end of the day to verify that the ballast is empty, we don't use it for any storage. Pretty simple and I wouldn't bother trying to cover it separately like I've seen some do with the glue down coverings.

Agreed. It’s full of water, not skis. However, Jim has a video that shows you how to cut in an access for a locker (and how to add snaps) if you want.

Color is grey and the carpet comes out this weekend. Based on prior comments, I’m expecting it should be pretty straightforward (see the beginning of this thread - thank you Boonejeepin!)

I prefer the clean look without the extra cuts/seams, with the trade off of just "pick up your feet for a moment while I check something real quick"... which you'd actually have to do anyway to open the door. The more I think about it the more I wouldn't want it any other way.

Had the matt out to finish the seam and had extra plastic so I made another template.

Free shipping to whoever wants it but with one condition- when you’re done, make it available to the forum and ship it free to the next guy.

Is the new template spoken for? I would like it as have been emailing with Jim about some Ultra flooring also. I can PM my address.

Condition gladly accepted.

Do you also have a template for your HDPE swim platform, or at least dimensions?

Cheers!

Floor template on its way to you on Monday. I don’t think I have the swim platform template any more. This (https://forum.moomba.com/showthread.php?24768-DIY-Surf-Pad/page3) is the thread where it was documented. If you’ve got access to a newer Moomba and a big piece of cardboard, it’s pretty easy. May want to read that whole thread b/c I was following what other guys already did.

You are awesome and a credit to this community! Whoever wants the template next, please let me know so I can send when I'm done. Thanks for the link to the swim platform thread, I'll try and get some measurements from one of the newer Moomba's on the lake.

Reviving an old thread here. My girlfriend and I bought a Craz last year and our biggest issue is not being able to bring the dogs in fear of their nails puncturing the Gatorstep. Walking around the New England Boat Show (quite disappointed at the SC showing btw) last night we stumbled on Deckadance in the MC booth. It seems like that would be a good product to protect our floor from the dogs.

Has anyone used this in a Craz? (Subtle hint that I'm looking for a template and happy to pay for it. Or, a dealer who has installed it in the northeast.)

Does anyone have any other suggestions for dog protection?

i have Decadance in my boat (not a Craz) and there are no issue with our dogs at all. It will hold up fine. That being said, there have been several threads on dogs in the boat and the main concern for most people in not the flooring, it is the upholstery on the seats. The general consensus from what i have read is that most people don't feel like the dogs do much damage at all to the upholstery.

Jim sells both the Decadance as well as a "knock off" that is exactly the same and a lot less expensive. It's called Jim's PVC Loop flooring. I love mine. I called and talked to him a couple of times and he was very helpful. He will send some samples it you want to see it in person.

He may still have a little remaining, that's what I bought last year for my Mondo. The PVC loop is not the same, and not nearly as nice as Deckadence or his knockoff (Ultra, if I remember correctly). It's basically the same miner's moss as you can get cheap on Ebay. It's a larger strand, coarser weave, and no backing.

Jim is very helpful and responsive, though.

in the fall of 2018.Yeah the stuff you're looking at that's similar to Deckadence is his Ultra Flooring. He doesn't carry that anymore, now just Deckadence and the PVC Loop, which is essentially colored miner's moss. He sent me samples of all 3 last year. When I bought my Ultra from him last May, it was some of the last he had in stock. It's unfortunate, because it's as good as Deckadence and waaaaay cheaper. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200220/9c9b88e0af46c163365f8302e6aeef9a.jpg
