View Full Version : Depth Gauge on a 2008 XLV

I am curious if my depth gauge is a thru hull or an in hull transducer on my 2008 XLV.

I'm wondering because if it's a thru hull, I wonder if it happens to have a transducer that has a water temp signal built in. If so, then it would make sense that one could swap out the gauge and get one that reads both water temp and depth.

If the transducer doesn't have a temp output, then I wonder if I could tap into the output on the perfect pass paddlewheel that gives water temp. (Yes, I know that I can have PP tell me the water temp, but having it just "displayed" would be nicer than having to press Menu/UpArrow, menu, menu, menu, uparrow. It's pretty much a combination of keystrokes that only I remember so if I'm not driving I have to go up there and press through all the menus to get the info.

I think a display like this would be nicer on the depth gauge:

I am pretty sure the depth gauge is "in Hull" it is glued to the bottom of the boat, somewhere near the transmission I think. I like the faria gauge too. I had put gauge in my previous boat. I think that also has an air temp sensor as well, that was nice to know too.

I think that i have heard of tapping the PP temp sensor for this, but i am not sure. good luck.

My XLV did not have a depth gage. I installed a Lowrance 5 DSI chart plotter (and fishfinder) $350? CDN plus map chip $99?...hundreds of lakes). I glued the transducer to the left of the transmission looking aft, works fine. Cool thing about it is that it can store all of your tracks from your activities, I try to stay on my previous "Safe" tracks. My budget this year and next does not have any $ for replacement of rudder, prop, and shaft etc, I am pretty sure it saved me this repair once as I could "see" what was ahead and missed a rock shelf only 24" deep, buoy was 60' to the left of it where it is only 12" deep. Another guy with a Nautique lost his running gear on it two days later, he was new to the lake.

The PP on my 2008 LSV displays the water temp all the time. Are you sure it's not just a setting in one of the menus.

This is what mine looks like. I've read the manual. I can't find where I'd have the temp on screen at all times... Do you have a different version somehow?

I know on my 08 LSV the Paddle wheel has the Temp sensor. If you have a True GPS PP then it wont use the Paddle Wheel and this is why you won't have a temp.

I do have the temp on my PP, I just have to dig through menus to get to it. I wonder what Kane's display looks like.

Dug out my manual. It says Wakeboard Pro by Perfect Pass, DBW, Version 6.5NG, July 2007.

Wow, that's exactly what I'd want. I just sent an email to PP to see if I can get them to walk me through changing the settings on mine to look like yours. If I can get mine working like yours, I'm going to be super stoked!!! (and this kind of "knowledge through sharing" is EXACTLY what these forums are all about)

Don't add it, you'll be hearing all day, what's the water temperate? Oh that's too cold.. Etc, etc...

LOL, it's actually ME that's asking all day long! But I have all the gear, so no problems there.

When someone new asks, I say it's like bath water.. Bath water can be really cold.. Lol

I am looking forward to the great information that Kane has shared. I am certain the Trayson will let us know how to perform this change if possible.

Thanks

This is my reply so far from Perfect Pass. I will need to trace the wires and find my master module to find the serial number. I find it odd that Kane and I would both have 2008 boats and he would have newer software and possibly even a newer module.

It's actually a firmware update that allows this to happen. In your case you may need to replace the Master Module to get this feature. What is the serial number on the Master Module?

Kane, perfect pass is telling me that your module or software must have been replaced at some point, as it doesn't make sense that we have the same year boats and yours has a more modern firmware.

Is this true Kane?

I will check my serial number to find this out. my module was replaced under warranty, I think in 2009, but it may have been the first season in 2008. I recall more than myself having warrantied their PP for problems. where do I look for the serial number?

Well, from the back of the display gauge, there would be wires leading to the control module. it's a little back box with various wire harnesses plugged into it. I'm honestly not sure where that is located. When I find mine, I'll tell ya where it was at.

The serial number would be on a sticker on the control module.

Ah, yes, i remember that. i think i did that myself. I should just leave work and go look now. great reason, thanks!

I don't think mine was ever replaced but could not say for sure. I'll get the serial number if it helps. My boat was a brand new 2 year holdover so bought new in 2010 but it is a 2008. They could have done anything during that period (although it had .4 hrs. on it or something when I got it so it seems unlikely). I've never done anything but use it. I do admit I really enjoy knowing what the water temp is at a glance whenever I feel like it. I'm so used to this comfort I hardly ever even think about it. In fact, I kind of take it for granted.

Trayson, I have an 08 XLV and my Perfect Pass looks just like yours. If you find a way to do this please let me know as I would like mine to look like that as well.

I'll keep you updated. I forgot to look for the serial # on my control box when I had the boat out yesterday. I'll try to remember to look soon as winterization is happening anytime.

So, I found out that my PP can't display temp without an update to the firmware and in turn an update to the control module:

Hi,

You would need to replace the Master Module to get this to happen. The firmware that does it can not be loaded on that current module. I can sell you one at a discount for $200 US plus shipping.

I did talk to Faria on the other hand and it appears that if the transducer I have is operating at or near the 235 MHz frequency then it should be able to be read by their gauge. Likewise, they confirmed that I should be able to tap the temp sensor coming off the paddlewheel and have the gauge read that as well.

Sounds complicated and/or expensive... but I know that's how you roll.

I have one of these bad boys out on the hot tub and it works great. Usually carry one in the boat too.

I ended up just installing Faria temp/depth gauge in my LSV. Just drilled a hole in the bottom of the hull behind the paddle wheel and done.

I didn't have PP in that boat.
