View Full Version : What's the difference between 325 and 340 motor? Specs are the same.

Ok I know the obvious answer BUT here are the specs for the two motors out of the owner's manual. If you look at the displacement, bore and stroke they are both the same. Does the 340 have different heads with larger domes? I wouldn't think so if the displacement is the same unless they don't include the domes. Exhaust maybe?
The only difference in the specs are the alternator output. 70 amp vs. 90 amp. Different coils that are running hotter?
I looked on forum and the net and didn't see anything definitive but there were some guesses.

They have a different Intake plenum on them, also I would have to assume the tuning is slightly different.

Cam, rockers, valves? When my 5.7 310 was rebuilt, the guy stuck a hotter cam setup in it claiming it would bump it to 340.

it was the exhaust as well in 2007, i believe it was a tuned exhaust and maybe cat as well, the 325 was standard old time

my launch20 had the 340ext motor in it. looking at pics of others with the 325, the exhaust manifolds were night and day different. it would appear that it's intake/exhaust and a tune. easy to pick up 15hp on a conservatively tuned motor with those mods.

don't forget that stickers add +/-5hp. ask any 20y.o with a honda civic :)

If the stickers are red that adds another 2-3 hp also.

That roll cage has saved my life multiple times! if you've never rolled your boat and been saved by the roll cage then you ain't living!

it's a west coast boat so not sure you will see many out east. have only seen one in person. it was a couple year old used model at dennis dillon rv in boise. not impressed from what I saw.
