A new chapter begins. I sold my 1992 Supra Sunsport to get a 2008 Moomba Mobius XLV 23'. My sunsport was fantastic, but I knew that we'd be happiest in a v-drive.

I was approached by a forum member on the Moomba forum with a private offer to buy his XLV. He gave me a great deal and I had it transported across the country to Indiana to Washington. I received it last night and am very happy.

Here it is this morning.

And here's to the Supra "Stormtrooper" Sunsport. It was a fantastic first boat!

Congrats from the east coast. Don't post a lot but I read the forum a lot. I recently upgraded from an 05 LSV to a 14 MOJO this past July. Thought I was going to miss my LSV because we had it so long and had so much fun with it, but I quickly got over that as soon as I got my grubby little hands on the MOJO. I love it! Hope you enjoy your new ride as much as I do mine.

Well, I've been busy with my XLV. I've taken it out about 5 or 6 times now and have been having fun and tweaking/modifying things along the way.

Audio
When I got the boat, there was a bad whine in the audio system. I started with adding a ground for the head unit to the battery and making sure everything else was grounded to that same battery neg.

I also found that the left tower speakers weren't working. That one turned out to be a bad RCA going into the amp, so I spliced a new end on the cable. After that, one of the tower left tower speakers still wasn't getting any sound, so I took out the speaker and found a broken lead where it was soldered to the terminal. I was planning on swapping out to the Kicker HLCD 6500.2 system so I pulled all the polks out of the cans and put the kickers in.

I also found that the bow speakers were wired off deck power while the rest of the amp powered speakers were running through the Exile ZLD mk2. I couldn't stand that, so I quickly rewired the bow speakers to the amp that was powering the rest of the cabin speakers.

There was an IPOD input going into the glovebox, which is great. But the deck had the ability to have an aux input as well as a USB input. So I wired in a 3.5mm aux input to the glove box as well as extending the USB so it's likewise in the glovebox.

I also added a car dock for my Samsung phone that suctions to the windshield and added an aux input that connects my phone to the aux input of the Exile ZLD mk2.

You can see the new tower speakers in this pic:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2GmVFJ4EaKg/VDIY6mJttsI/AAAAAAAAUfI/mzSVepfg240/s800/GOPR1257.JPG

Cleaning & refurbishing
Of course I gave the vinyl a good cleaning and cleaned all the nooks and crannies. I took care of a few little things like adding some electrical tape to the centercap of the steering wheel so it stays on instead of falling off. Tightened the screws on the various shocks. I bought some 1/4" bungee cord at Walmart and put new bungees on the tower racks and also on the Monster Cargo Bimini.

The batteries were about done, so I yanked the batteries out of my camping trailer and put them in the boat. Irish Racing had the battery tender style pigtails going to the batteries, so I put those same ends on my float chargers to make it easy to keep things topped off.

Ballast System
When I got the boat, it had a 650 in the center basement locker, and 1100 port side and a 400 starboard. I bought another 1100 and have that in the starboard now. Eventually I'll get the 1180 gravity center bag (probably during the wakemakers black friday sale). The bags don't have vents, so eventually I'll do that. In the meantime I put the regular fly high quick connect fittings on the unused port. this allows for not only quick venting of the rear bags, but also lets me hook my portable Tsunami pump onto the bag to have double fill or double drain going on.

One of the bags also was filling while underway, so I spent the $13 and got a new sprinkler valve. Eventually I'll be changing out the whole ballast system, but I wanted it to work as designed for the time being.

The owner before Irish Racing had taken the hard cooler that went under the gap on the port seats and filled it with concrete. While this is a nifty way to add more ballast, I'd just as soon have that as a functional cooler so I bought another coleman party stacker cooler for $25 off Amazon and use it as a cooler again. the in floor "cooler" has basically become our trash can.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1zQTxFx6UEM/VAnlrSnDlMI/AAAAAAAAUGI/wGOAbNzqDHs/s800/20140903_182303_resized.jpg

Upgrades
I have also added some upgrades. The boat didn't have a safety chain on the bow, so I added one of those. Also the oem jack had bent, so the boat came with a clamp on jack that really was too small for the trailer. But Irish Racing included a new Fulton F2 double wheel jack so all I needed was the adapter plate and then I got that on.

All in all, I am truly loving the boat. The seating layout is absolutely fantastic. I love the two flip up seats on the playpen walkthough. the front most backrest actually doubles as a windblock between the bow and cabin.

Someone had commented on the hinges of my flip up seats. The bow hinges look pretty stout to me, but the flip up seat behind the driver's seat seems a little less robust. I love that flip up too though!
Playpen backrest:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JjL-lOknuPE/VDdY091FClI/AAAAAAAAUg8/euIM5LrTfAs/s800/20141009_180553.jpg

A lot of people don't like the fact that the driver's seat doesn't swivel. I really don't miss the swivel. maybe because I have the wrap around front seating and no walkthrough it's different? Dunno. But the driver's seat seems to be awesome as is. Love the flip up bolster and I don't seem to miss the legroom with the pair of 12" subs under the helm.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-bBBFEGDsVHk/VA3Txi2GOmI/AAAAAAAAULI/R7j5QomIQps/s800/VP3333681_7_large_resized_zpsfcaaaab8.jpg

I have to say that going to the multi-line version of Perfect pass wakeboard pro is awesome. I like the presets and love how the display is flushed into the dash. Also having a power wakeplate is fantastic. And fuel injection is SO nice. not only do i have more reliability, but I have more power and BETTER fuel efficiency than my Supra could have ever dreamed of. Like I said, the interior is huge and well thought out. the playpen bow is noticeably bigger than the supra's (like a whole person bigger). The storage compartments are deep and plentiful. the rear lockers easily fit a ton of wake and surfboards. In fact, I regulary have been putting 2 surfboards, a wakeskate, a wakeboard, a couple life vests and 3 inflated bouy balls in the lockers with a little room to spare.

The boat also handles the chop better than my supra did. And the wakeboard wake is fantastic with just the center 650 filled. The surf wave is okay. It has potential. Right now I've been running the rear surfside locker full (prob around 900, doesn't seem to fill the full 1100). And the center 650. One time I piggybacked a 400 on top of the 650. Like I said, the gravity 1180 will eventually go there. I do find that the swim platform is cutting into my surf wave and the lip on the bottom is robbing me of push. I had a similar problem with my supra and fixed that with a custom platform. I've been working on a custom platform and have it basically done, just need to let the contact cement dry.

Great work trayson! I love the 07 08 seats. They brought them back in the mojo line.
I'm working on the seat swivel. Let me know if that is on your list.
I assume with the new platform your going with the nss style gate again.

Ya know, the swivel seat isn't a huge priority for me so far. it might end up on the list at some point, but for now, the fixed seat seems to be fine. the gaps beside and behind the seat seem to be good places for our flip flops too. haha.

I've thought long and hard about how I could do an NSS style gate. but with the hull contours of the XLV, it would be really tough. For the short term, I'm going to go a 'ghetto gate' and think about what I could do for long term. maybe down the road a surfgate with actuators might be decent. We'll see.

Added some more mods to the boat. Put on version 1 of the custom surf platform. I'll trim off more of the corners and round them as version 2.

The winch that was on there wasn't confidence inspiring. it just didn't seem to engage the gear to lock it in place with enough certainty that I knew it wasn't going to pop out of gear. So I threw down and got a nice Fulton F2 winch. I like it a lot. I did have to buy 2 longer stainless carriage bolts, but other than that, install was a snap.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YgW70umtqg0/VEScAYoFjoI/AAAAAAAAUmY/ogreZkfGIJE/s800/20141018_152639.jpg

I also went ahead and got some ratcheting/retractable stern tie downs. I know that boat buckle's are the "go to" strap, but for 1/2 the price, I went with the $30 Erickson's. I think they'll work out fine.

Trayson I am glad to see you are having so much fun on that boat. I miss it but glad it went to someone who is making it even better then it was. I just didn't have the time to dedicate to it to justify keep her. Sorry about the tower speakers I honestly didn't know they had stopped working. I need to come out to Washington next season for a ride.

splicing the RCA took all of 5 minutes, so big deal there. and the other loose connection in the towers was just motivation to put the new Kicker HLCD speakers in the cans. And they CRANK! so that's awesome.

Do you tow with the Bimini on too? I have the Z5 cargo and was told I shouldn't.

The specs on the Monster say to not tow at speeds over 45mph. I've left it on for short distances (~6 miles) towing moderate speeds (~60mph) on the freeway, and it's been okay thus far.

If I'm going to tow any farther, I definitely take off the fabric. I don't have any qualms about towing with the fabric off and the frame on.

That said, I intend on making it more of a "quick release" to take the fabric off so it's not as much of a production to take off the fabric.

I only had the XLV for a matter of weeks before the season ended. I had the fabric off the bimini most the time (which unfortuntately on the Monster defeats the purpose of having the cargo bimini in the first place because the bungees for the boards are integrated into the fabric). But I'm thinking of rigging up something that would allow for no fabric and still carrying boards... we'll see...

We had the Z5 on the LSV and we would tow all the time up to 65mph and pretty much any distance. I would tow it to LBC 3.5 hours, Eugene 2 hours, and Washington 2 hours and never an issue.

I Did mount it so it was angled slightly down in the front so the air pressure was pushing it down.

I how ever did not store my boat outside, and I sprayed it with 303 UV protectant a couple times in the summer to keep it from fading or drying out.

did you just use a lobster clasp? that's what I was thinking of for mine.

Or Berg told me that on his, he just put a loop on one end and a knot on the other. when there was tension, the looped end would hold the knotted end but when the tension was released, you could simply take the knotted end out of the loop. So that was another thought.

Well, in an attempt to correct just that, I've played with my tongue height. I ultimately had to go with a lift ball on the drop drawbar to find a best combo.

It's tough to find that perfect spot, with truck suspension squat vs. trailer leveling. I was going to put the helper bags in the truck's springs, but the truck actually has the shock inside the rear spring, so I can't do that.

I'll take a look at it again when the season hits. I've got another lift ball that would take it up another inch if I remember right, so I can "play with my balls" a little.

Oh, I know. I tried the 2" drop with a normal ball as a 2" rise, and while it did good things to the trailer it made the truck squat unreasonably much in the rear. It's a tradeoff of getting the trailer and the truck as good as I can.

I think your missing the idea here, you flip the 2" drop over and flip the ball. It would have been the same height as the viagra ball you installed.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a drop hitch, what about a straight hitch?

Yes, you're exactly right, a 2" drop drawbar + a 2" higher ball = a straight hitch with a zero drop...
http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_13537.jpg

However, I didn't know if I'd be best with a zero drop or a 1" drop. It was cheaper to buy the balls than it was to get the straight hitch and it got me two options instead of one.

I think your missing the idea here, you flip the 2" drop over and flip the ball. It would have been the same height as the viagra ball you installed.

Actually, you need to go back and do the math my friend.

a 2" drop drawbar with a standard ball = 2" drop.
a 2" drop drawbar flipped upside down with a standard ball = 2" RISE.

A 2" drop drawbar with a 2" lifted "viagra ball" = ZERO drop.

a 2" drop drawbar with a 1" lifted "not quite so viagra ball" = 1" drop.

You're off by 2 inches bro! (that's what she said)

And for what it's worth, I was a little "colorful" with my choice of words. "unreasonably low" was a bit dramatic. But I was aiming for perfection. I wanted as level trailer as possible and as level truck as possible. And obviously I'm dealing with inches, so it's not like we're talking about extreme angle changes on either.

I guess if I completely replaced the rear suspension (springs/shocks) with bags, that might be possible. I'd be looking at probably a $1000 upgrade. I wish I could just do the "helper bags" but with the rear shocks inside the rear springs, that's not an option.

Maybe I'll try these if I need to.

Thanks to the idea from Brain Rinse, I ordered up some of the EZ Net Organizers. I am doing a small (12x12) and a medium (24x12) and those will go on the lids of the rear lockers (I don't want stuff getting trapped by the bags in there so I'm not going to mount them on the sides like he did).

I also ordered another small (12x12) that will go on the wall just above the driver's seat cupholders.

Thanks for the idea.

Took out my floors to run the 1" fill line to the front center locker. The old fill line was 3/4" and zip tied to all the electrical, so the floor had to be removed. Found out that they install with screws from the sides that are accessed from the underseat storage.

I removed the carpet from the front panel. I used a scraper attachment on my cordless reciprocating saw. That thing works amazing but you have to be careful. My fiberglass got a couple chips. whoops.

Covered with hydroturf. I used the gel contact cement and that worked okay for the most part. But I had to break out the 3m Super 90 spray adhesive to get some of the parts to stick. There are a couple spots where on the sides it bulges a little on a corner. I think that will get squished down when I install it and won't be noticeable. I still have to cut the opening for the cooler lid. The lid was taken off and I'll do the hydroturf on it separately with a scrap I had from this sheet.

Trayson were you able to do it with one sheet (no seams)?
Looks good.

Barely. When I ordered from PWC muscle, I had them ask for as big of sheets as possible. Instead of 37", I was able to get 40 and I think they're like 62" long. I put the long dimension horizontally and the 40" going bow-to-stern. I had JUST barely enough to make it work. the forward and rear-most edges actually don't have enough material to wrap underneath the panel. But I did it so that the forward edge (at the driver's feet) is flush with the end of that edge (where it contact the next layer of flooring under it). The trailing edge likewise didn't have enough material to wrap around underneath, but that one will have another panel butting up against it so I'm okay with the fact it isn't wrapping all the way around.

When I do the big gas tank panel, I will likewise keep the long dimension going port-to-starboard so I can cover the cooler section. I will have a seam on that piece, but I'm going to try really hard to make that seam so that it'll be just on the little legs of the panel that are on either side of the v-drive opening. Furthermore, I'm going to try to make it so that seam will ultimately be covered by the skybox seat that covers the v-drive.

In this pic you can see the panel I'm talking about. it's one big piece.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gJLlaz_iN2Y/VNwyMsREHDI/AAAAAAAAX40/DEBRdbwwRBk/s800/20150211_205224.jpg

The line at the bottom of the pic is the forward edge of the panel and you can see the change in shade of the carpet around the v-drive opening that will show how much of it gets covered by the rear seat bench.

Under my panels, there's a carpeted lip that it sits on. it's the next layer of flooring that continues under the seat bases. so compared to some of the other Moombas, I think the XLV carpet layout is pretty conducive to a hydroturf install. especially since I don't have a bow walkthrough of any of that silliness to deal with.

Gonna look sharp. What are you going to do for edging/trim around the base?

I'm not sure if I understand your question.

The panels that I'm wrapping with hydroturf go all the way flush to the seat bases. they sit on top of carpeted lips of flooring. basically the main floor panels I'm doing are actually higher than the carpeted "flooring" that is the bottom of the underseat lockers.

I will say that I cut the carpet out for the driver's footrest section. I had a scrap that was perfect to fit there and will go up flush with the sub box trim. the outside edges of that piece will be covered by the cupholder box and at the rear by the big floor panel that I've got completed above.

bergermaister
03-10-2015, 01:49 PM

Like the light gray stuff here (that is wanting to peel up)

trayson
03-10-2015, 02:15 PM
I don't have a trim piece like that. Probably because my middle floor panels actually cover the bottom of the seat bases.

If you look at this picture, you can see the dirt line on the seat bases? That's how high the floor goes. The floor is higher than the bottom of the fiberglass on the seat base. so no trim.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-51Gv4W8npho/VPfOj3HNt5I/AAAAAAAAYKA/1NQgNBtFHBI/s800/20150304_184225.jpg

likewise on this pic, you can see the dirt line on the seat bases with the rear panel removed. you can also see the panel in front of the aluminum pole on the right is higher than the bottom of the seat base.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-l_FJzkltQlc/VPfOrChFIzI/AAAAAAAAYKg/0GKSIW20pKM/s800/20150304_182035.jpg
So I have no trim on the bottoms of my seat bases because the floor sections overlap them.

And here's a 'before' pic that shows how the carpeted center panels go all the way flush with the seat bases with no trim.

LOL. When do you take delivery?

The floor is a bit more work than I had figured, but it's worth it. PWC Muscle was great to work with on ordering it. he put in a note to make the sheets as long and WIDE as possible. so I got mine and they were 62x40 which really helped in covering my panels. That said you panels could end up different than mine. Boonejeepin has a newer XLV and his panels are different. look for his "floor covering project" thread. he took pics of his bare panels for me.

And I have more mods to come. I had to make a spreadsheet as a checklist of sorts to keep track of all the stuff I've got lined up for my boat! I've been prioritizing them as far as which need to happen before I get on the water, and which ones are able to be spread out over the summer. I'm aiming for March 21 to be back in the water!

I modded the heck out of my Supra Sunsport DD, but I always knew in the back of my head that it didn't make sense to go TOO crazy on mods because I knew 'eventually' I'd end up in a V-drive. I didn't think that 'eventually' would happen so soon, but I'm really happy to have what could end up being my 'forever boat'. I've been in newer boats that have triple digit price tags and honestly I will be happy with my XLV for MANY years to come.

Originally I had wrapped hydroturf around on all 4 sides. when all was said and done, I had to remove the turf from two of the floor faces so the door would close. there was just too much bulk otherwise. Now it closes snug and looks decent. (well aside from the fact that my cooler compartment is filthy and the bottom of the lid is dirty too.)

Installed my new subwoofers tonight with the spacer rings (because of the increased mounting depth). I put back in the forward subfloor!

As part of my floor project, I did hydroturf for the driver's feet and also did some under the driver's seat. (when I'm driving and have the booster up, I tend to put my foot on the fiberglass panel that the seat's mounted to. I've had it happen where my foot's slipped off that fiberglass and I've banged my heel on it. Ouch. So a little texture sounded good. The section where the driver's feet are is at a different level from the rest of the floor panels (it's sunken). So I was okay with the hydroturf patter going the other direction because it utilized a scrap piece I'd cut out.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Vz_TjFPToTM/VQu8d3WEGaI/AAAAAAAAYUk/L6nO5Gs2Lk8/s800/20150319_210205.jpg

I had to trim a little of the cupholder assembly to fit better. Not sure what happened, but with the change in flooring it needed about a 1/4" of jigsaw work here and there.

I also did another project to add some bling. I got some blue metalflake vinyl and I covered the seat bases in it. I used knifeless tape to make the top cut. It came out pretty good. I love blue and it matches the interior great. I can't wait to see it in the sunshine!

You can see the panel and the cutout for the built in cooler. It looks pretty slick. Not perfection, but unless you're super close, it looks great.

Instead of using those wide carpet washers, I used regular stainless washers on the 3 screws at the driver's feet. The other ones would have most certainly cut into the hydroturf. For simplicity, I left the carpet under the sub and on the walls and on the cupholder. So far so good!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lOrQGkEw89c/VQu8NG-3Q2I/AAAAAAAAYT8/hkGhrxNiUdE/s800/20150319_210219.jpg

The access panel at the front of the driver's seat-base is where you have to go to do two of the screws that hold the seatbase into the floor panels. the screws go in horizontally and the floor panels are higher than the bottom of the seat bases. Thank goodness for my cordless impact. I don't think I would have been able to get it screwed in otherwise. Getting the impact on the screw head and using torque to your advantage was great. I also needed my "bendy" attachment that allows me to have a flexible extension on my cordless impact for screwing and drilling around corners. haha!

I'll ultimately cover the access hole at the driver's feet with a vent from my heatercraft heater I plan to install soon.

I actually have a spare set I was going to install this year. Guess they can stay on the shelf until next year.

Saturday and most likely Sunday this week is move the rest of the master bed room out, move the living room out to the garage, then pull the rest of the base boards, start painting. Floor installers arrive bright and early Monday morning, 3 days of saws, hammers, and fun next week.

Well, I reached a milestone today, the floor is back in and I'm at a place where I can put the boat in the water this weekend (weather permitting).

First off, I did take a few minutes to cut a non-skid drawer liner for the bottom of the glove box. Cost of this mod = a Dollar.

Looking forward I think it came out nicely. I added blue metalflake vinyl to the seat bases and love how it ties into the blue in the upholstery and how it adds more blue to the interior. Can't wait to see it sparkle.

The new floor and the metalflake seat bases make it look like a whole different boat. And as you can see, the gray hydroturf ties in perfectly with the gray carpet that's left around the speakers/cupholders.

So, this qualifies as a modification in that I did it specifically for the boat. to get the XLV into the back yard under my carport was a tight squeeze through the double gates.

Picture of the gate before:

And the amount of space I had on each side of the trailer:

So I put a hinge between the two gates and extended the left gate so that it latches against the house. I gained myself an extra foot of opening this way. It's going to make life so much easier getting the boat in and out of the carport.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LR1LsDOOado/VQ9rDcEkHpI/AAAAAAAAYXQ/Si2kE-azrfU/s800/20150322_181803.jpg

you can see the spot with the sawdust on the left where the 4x4 post used to be. That's how much clearance i gained.

I still have to be careful of the gas meter on the side of the house, but this will eliminate one bottleneck.

Totes jelly of yer carport

I am really stoked on it. it's almost like having a garage. I was able to back the boat in last night, and simply open up the storage lockers to let them air out. Left a couple things out on the floor to dry out. I couldn't do that parking it in the RV parking exposed to the street and prying eyes. It was a lot of money, but I'm happy I have it. So nice to have a place to work on the boat regardless of what the weather's doing.

Boonejeepin wanted insight on my upgrade to my monster cargo bimini.

First thing I did was cut the rope that holds the bimini onto the frame. I cut it in the middle of the bimini between the crossbars. that way I'll be able to take the cover off in about a minute, without having to unthread it from the cover loops all the way around. I used Berg's idea to tie a loop on one end and a knot on the other for my "quick release". we'll see how it does. when the rope's taunt, the knot and loop are held together tight.

Next I wanted to figure a way to still hold boards on the bimini with the cover off. The cover has the bungees so with it off, my ability to secure boards was gone. I went the quick and easy route and just used materials I had laying around the garage. I had some 3/8" bungee left over from an RV project, so I used it. I thought about all sorts of elaborate ways to attach the bungees to the padded crossbar. I thought about using nylon webbing with cam buckles. IN the end, I just figured I needed ways to secure the bungee to the crossbar and wanted it done quick/cheap/easy.

So I decided I'd just use zip ties to secure the bungee. but I didn't want to have the zip ties cut into the bungee fabric, so I sheathed the zip ties with some 3/8 fuel hose I had laying around. It's all black so from a distance it'll blend. the bungee I had was white. not my first choice, but I had it laying around.

This is the idea I went with:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-xJ9IguWecUc/VSKuyhDohqI/AAAAAAAAYi4/Qx-NEQ35Afg/s800/bungee.jpg

Pics:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MwKM03tMaJ4/VSVGexyWJeI/AAAAAAAAYjs/QLezYS7cd0M/s800/20150408_080256.jpg

With this setup, I'll be able to load the boards with the fins facing towards the bow. that will make it so I don't have to tilt the cargo bimini to remove the boards as I would with the cover on. (because of where my tower speakers are, I can't get boards out w/o tilting the bimini. not a huge deal, but a small hassle that is avoided with the cover off and the boards facing the other way.)

More upgrades. I changed my Kicker KM6500.2 to a six pack and added LED speaker rings and LED lights to light up the cones on the midranges. All that is detailed in my "stereo upgrades" (https://forum.moomba.com/showthread.php?25768-Trayson-s-adventures-in-stereo-upgrades&highlight=stereo+upgrades) thread.

I added 1 more bungee net to the gunwale wall just above the driver's cupholders.

Made some more mods to the XLV. I had some blue metalflake vinyl and I covered the blue above the rub rail with it. I love the sparkles. It's a pain to work with because it doesn't stretch like regular vinyl wrap, so there are a few unavoidable creases, but overall it looks good.

Been a while since I've updated this thread. at the end of the summer, I got some of my cabin speaker LED lighting done. They have 1/8" plexiglass rings with 1 LED per MM narrow strips hot glued to the inside of the plexi rings. Then I have Angel eyes illuminating the cones of the speakers. (same setup as I have on my tower speakers).

Today I added some LED cupholders. Originally I was going to go with the Cupholder rings like most everyone else, but when I was at the boat show a 2 months ago, I saw the new Malibu M235 and instantly fell in love with the translucent cupholders with LED's that made the barrel of the cupholders glow. I sourced some and installed them in the cabin tonight. (I still have 6 more to install, but these were easy since I already had the speaker LED wiring there).

With the lights off, they look nice and clean.

The LED's are actually embedded in the barrel of the cupholders:

I've seen that pic posted before. Is every area like that? Or just certain shores? I mean, if the whole waterway was like that, there'd be no boating there day or night.

Come on now, I just spent two days with Tracy tearing up the slopes in Park City. Of course I went into my purchase history and I hooked him up with the info.

Not sure how I missed updating for this mod, but at the end of the summer I added the Exile BT Controller. I love it. I have it setup so it sends the remote turn-on lead to my WS420SQ and to my amps. That way I can turn on my system without the headunit if I am only using BT or the Aux input from the Exile controller. But if I want to use the headunit for FM radio or for the USB input or for the Aux input over in the glove box, I can still use the headunit. (it has the remotes by the driver and on the rear transom, so those are nice if using music off the USB flash drive).

I found a dash spot and mounted the Exile BT controller there. It came out really clean and I am really happy with the unit.

Fixed = Replaced. The replacements aren't pennies, but they aren't ridiculously expensive either. so I just got a new caliper and slapped it in place. I have a one man vacuum brake bleeder powered off my air compressor, so bleeding the brake wasn't a big deal. It came galvanized IIRC, and I just left the one silver caliper and didn't care that it didn't match the other 3 that were powder coated blue.

Did some more LED mods today.

I got some blue LED angel eyes off ebay, and I mounted them to the inside of my subwoofer grills. I've found that the hot glue gun doesn't work all that well because the LED's give off heat that softens the glue. so I skipped the glue and attached them with small clear zip ties. I drilled little mounting holes for them into the plastic of the grills. You really can't see them at all when the grills are mounted.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160410_145338_zpsxrpemmyb.jpg

I again drilled in the plastic grills and made a path for the power wire to go through the grill.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160410_145647_zpsb1lowgjj.jpg

The angel eyes would illuminate the cone of my subs. I also wanted a speaker ring to glow around the outside. I used some translucent plastic tubing and sourced some thin LED strips that had LED's ever centimeter. I tried both ways, but was happiest with the LED's facing INWARD so you couldn't really see each LED, but could see the illuminated tubing.

I taped the ends of the tubing together with black electrical tape. I'm not thrilled with how that looks, but I'll have to brainstorm a better solution. when I did LED cupholder rings on my last boat, I used a 1/4 inch aluminum rod as a connector, but since wires are running through this ring, I can't really do that. Maybe if I just used clear tape instead of black...

Anyway, here's the finished product. I also added the illuminated cupholders for the two next to the driver. I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out (aside from the tape).

Started working on replacing my docking lights with LED's. I found some on ebay that were 9w and 12w cree LED's. I can't remember which is which, but one of them was WAY to deep. The other one was just a bit deeper than a stock halogen MR-16. with a quick mod to the retaining ring for the bulb, it fits fine in the stock housing. I did one light, then stopped so I could get some side by side shots of the halogen vs. the LED once the sun goes down.

In this pic, you can see the depth with the LED on the left. probably about 1/4 to 3/8" deeper.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160410_142952_zpsurxis70f.jpg

LED vs Halogen. (the plastic piece is a wall anchor that I used for the new hole in the plastic light housing so the screw would have somewhere to anchor too)

My housings are pretty water spotted. But you can see the LED mounted here:

I'll get some more detail once the sun goes down, but for now, the only shot I have is a daylight shot. You can still see the white of the LED vs the yellow of the Halogen though.

When I replace the other side I'll try to get some pics of what I had to do to relocate the bulb retaining clip.

I suppose I could try. some of the things I've thought of are clear tape. Or using a sleeve of tubing that has the same inside diameter as the outside diameter of this stuff. but the super glue idea is worth looking into. Maybe some thicker gel super glue from a hobby store, and the instant activator spray...

Overtons has them for $25 ea. which is ridiculous IMO.

Mike found some on Amazon I think. I got mine off ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/191596996697?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) for $10ea.

Jeeeeeezus ... I thought those were boat lights but was thinking what are the chances they are all facing the same way and the lights are red. Then I realized those are f**king crocodiles. I can handle bears and mountain lions ... but friggin crocodiles roaming the depths ... not a chance.

Thanks. Wiring them is pretty easy. It just takes some imagination and vision to think about where to put them and how to put it all together. Figuring out what's on the market (like the angel eyes and the thin/high density LED strips) is key. Obviously leveraging what others have done and sometimes giving it your own twist.

Okay, so I took some night shots. It's really hard to say what gives more light. they're fairly comparable in output, but the white light of the LED's is so much nicer. and the fact it takes less wattage (with less heat) to produce the output.

This is the night shot of them both. The Port is Halogen, the starboard is obviously LED.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160410_220544_zpsm3lzhazl.jpg

Here is one docking light with the LED. (I covered up the halogen for this pic). As you can see, it's a nice white light.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160410_220642_zpsfnhbyd0y.jpg

Here is a shot with only the halogen. The black blob you see is the shadow of the winch handle.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160410_220624_zpsbodsb7v9.jpg

This one is interesting. it's the halogen on the left, and the LED on the right. but because both lights are overlapping, it's hard to draw much conclusion from this.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160410_220451_zpsxukn3gzm.jpg

Bottom line is that I feel like I can get at least similar output from the LED's that I was getting from the Halogens. so I'll stay LED for their low wattage and whiter light.

This is what the factory light looks like. to get a bulb that is a little bit deeper, I simply drilled another hold and put in a wall anchor and moved the retaining clip forward. obviously you can't go with a bulb TOO deep or it'll hit the lens.

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160412_184154_zpsql13n4t5.jpg

And always test the polarity on LED's before you button everything up. if they don't light up, then flip it 180 degrees.

And now I have bright, white light that is only consuming 12w per side instead of 50w per side.

Trayson, if I may suggest a superglue for your led rings Id use Loctite 404 industrial adhesive. It comes in a little yellow bottle with a blue label affixed. This stuff is clear and insane. Whatever you use it on is never coming apart. We use it at work to build o ring gaskets. Another really good one is Devcon 2 part epoxy plastic welder, but Id try the loctite first.

Last weekend I decided it was time to replace my batteries. They have been doing "okay" but I've had moments that have hinted that they're not full strength anymore.

I only run 2 batteries and haven't really found the need for more, so I figured I'd stick with 2 for the time being. I went into walmart in Portland (no sales tax) and found that they only had one group 24 battery in stock. Not wanting to leave empty handed, I saw that they had a pair of group 29 batteries for the same price as the 24's. I figure why not take the bump to 114 Amp Hours over the 105 for the same price. Yeah, I would have to get new battery boxes, but if I was going to make a change, now was the time. Battery boxes for $8ea on Amazon, so that was easy.

Installed the new boxes and batteries today.

Here's a size comparison of the old vs. new. The 24 filled the old box and the 29 almost fills the new box.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160413_185455_zpszdqaksjs.jpg

All done, with the float chargers plugged in (I use the two prong leads like you'd see on a battery tender brand for quick connecting the chargers without taking the lids off the boxes.

So for the price of 2 battery boxes, a little upgrade in capacity.

Just thought I'd post up some feedback. Last season I had some problems with my bags passively filling, especially the front sack. This was because the bag's inlet was sitting below the water line. Without the slow sprinkler valves, I really had nothing to stop that passive filling.

The vented loops from WM are really expensive, so I took a chance and got the 1" vented loop off ebay which costs about $5. It works GREAT. No more passive filling problems with my 1180 playpen bag. Additionally, I believe they're a smaller footprint than the WM ones. I just installed it at the top of my playpen locker and it works perfect.

basically as high up on the starboard side of the locker. up where it's carpeted.

I'll have to take a pic. even when full, my bag doesn't fill to the point where it could even come close to popping the cushion. and when empty, the fill port is way lower than the vented loop.

How deep is your basement locker? Mine's deep enough to put 3 surfboards in there, or 2 surfboards and 1 wakeboard.

Not deep enough. With the 1180 bag filled it is pushing against the playpen cover. So 20" maybe? My vented loop is up under/behind the dash with plumbing cleverly hidden. No other place to put it.

I can fit a couple boards when it's drained with some careful maneuvering. Advantage XLV I guess.

So, when I replaced my tower speakers with the kicker HLCD ones, I ended up with some extra Polk DB651's. I am running 4 of them off one side of a 4 channel amp (at 2 ohms) and I only had the pair of bow speakers on the other side of the 4 channel at 4 ohms. I knew I had untapped capacity, so I figured why not add another pair of polks.

I was thinking about putting them both in the rear seat, but realized that it would be too tight of a fit. so I put one in the rear seat and one under the playpen walkthrough.

I used a flat 4 trailer connector to give me a disconnect for the rear seat speaker in case I wanted to pull that seat out. 2 wires for the speaker, 2 wires for the LED's.
Of course I did matching plexiglass rings with LED's hot glued to the inside of the ring, and angel eyes to light the cones.

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160430_191258_zpsyxbrckx7.jpg

The surface mount LED accent light was already there from a previous mod, so I just left it in place and tapped into the court light circuit to power the new speaker LEDs.

The speaker in the basement walkthrough locker has a plastic piece on the back side to shield it a little from moisture and what not, but it's tucked out of the way, so the ballast bag and boards I keep in there wouldn't ever hurt the speaker.

So, I've been having an issue with the fitment of my starboard bow seat. what's happened is that the foam has been pushed so that the seatbase actually is resting towards the outside of the boat while the foam and vinyl is pushed over towards the center of the boat. it's been like this so long that the foam isn't returning to its normal shape directly over the seatbase. what this is doing is making it so that the seatbase is not centered over the frame/locker-opening that supports it. I've had it where someone stepped on the cushion and the inside edge of the cushion got pushed into the locker opening. It's also compounded by the center cushion mushrooming a bit, making it so the starboard cushion stays pushed towards the outside of the boat.

I've attempted to remedy this by adding a few more "guides" on the bottom of the seatbase. it had a couple but it wasn't enough to help the cushion stay aligned with frame to support it on all sides. I had some 1/2" HDPE laying around, so I cut a few 1" squares. I double stacked them to make a 1" cube of HDPE and drilled some holes thorough it. I simply screwed them into the seat bases. Hopefully the new guides will help keep the seatbase centered. I ended up with a gap under the backrest cushions where the foam of the seatbase cushions had been pushed away. for the time being, I put a thinner pool noodle in that gap under the backrest cushion.

Last time I was out I experienced some clipping on my sub amp. It was behaving like it wasn't getting the voltage it needed. Some of that was probably because I turned up the gain because it seemed I wasn't getting quite the output expected from the subs. But I think that ultimately I wasn't getting the current the amp wanted.

I plan on doing two things to address this. First, I am going to add a capacitor. I have a pair 1,000,000 and 500,000 laying around from a previous install, so I'll just throw those into my system.
http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u492/traysonh/Moomba%20XLV/20160509_185416_zpsam7c4yge.jpg
(yeah, I've read a couple of the great capacitor debates, and if nothing else it'll be more ballast. LOL. But it's not like I'm buying new ones, so I can't really hurt anything).

Second, I figured that this was a big sign that I am due for an upgrade of my wiring. I'm honestly not sure whether the factory wiring is CCA or OFC, but I know that some of the wiring I used when re-doing my amps was CCA. the factory wiring is also all 4 gauge and likewise that's what I used when changing out my amps. It killed me to spend so much money on wire, but last night I ordered 1/0 OFC for power and ground, and for the connections between batteries and to the perko switch. I also ordered a handheld hydraulic crimper with a variety of dies, and a bunch of 1/0 silver tinned copper ring terminal lugs. Also ordered some 4ga OFC. Oh, and my power wire will go from the previous red to blue, so it'll match my boat color better. LOL.

trayson - What does a capacitor do? What purpose does it serve in your sound system? What would happen if your system did not have capacitors? - Deerfield

There's a lot of debate in the car audio world. proponents say they provide a reserve of electricity that can be drawn upon quicker than the battery. However, others say they do nothing and simply drain your wallet. I was having it happen where my sub amp was clipping after a bit because it wasn't getting enough voltage. Could that have been because I was running it off a single battery? Maybe. Could that have been because I was using 4 gauge for my runs and that I was getting voltage drop across the wire and needed to up the gauge to have less voltage drop? Maybe.

So I did re-do the wiring, and I did ultimately add another battery. But I figured that since I had the Caps laying around, that I'd throw them in the mix. they certainly can't hurt anything,. I know they use capacitors in other applications--like your A/C compressor motor on your home A/C has one to handle the startup draw. Basically they're like a battery, but for quick discharge/delivery of electricity.

Okay, I posted it up on the June Pic thread, but I'll update here too:

I honestly love both Exile and WS, companies, and have both exile and ws in my boat. I could have been happy with either, but I had a pair of WS Rev410s offered up to me at a really killer price, so I couldn't pass them up.

And they are going to fit my amplifier setup great. I already had my kicker 6 pack running off a PPI P600.2 so for the rev's I added another one. 600 watts mono at 4 ohms to each one. Woot!

They fit my tower well and are gonna work out great with my cargo Bimini.
