Hey guys! Figured it's about that time to start posting our winter project ideas. Let's see what you have planned so we can feed off of each other's ideas.

2000 Moomba Outback LS

- Hydro turf floor
- Sea Dek pad
- New speakers
- New panel switch to control LEDS on speakers and in boat lighting
- Clean up all my wiring
- Swivel platform for drivers seat

Here's my base line plans for now, see what I get accomplished!

This is my fall/winter stuff... This pile of stuff will get me started... New(ish) boat = starting over on mods.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2SRhCnh8CIA/VBon_IsT4dI/AAAAAAAAUSw/urANGgpeV3w/s800/20140917_172327-1.jpg

4 port heatercraft heater
upgrade basement bag to 1100 (easy)
change out polk tower speakers to HLCD kickers and rewire amps to more efficiently power the system
put on the CIPA vision 180 mirror (easy)

I'd also like to some of my DIY transom lights and the drain plug CREE light
I'd love it if I was able to pull off installing RGBW accent/speaker/cupholder lighting in the boat
I'd be stoked if I could do an upgrade of the ballast pumps
Maybe even fab up a surf system if I get ambitious.

Of course, it's entirely possible that beyond the obvious easy stuff, my list might end up being something like:
1) Winterize
2) Snowboard

The lighting is really easy if you do it the way I am. I have 2 deist riveting panels 1 in 8 out that I'm going to run to a switch panel with built in breaker. Run the whole distribution panel to a single switch and I can effectively power 8 LED light on 1 switch. I'm running all my speaker LEDS on one switch then all internal accent lighting off of another. I'll take pictures as I set it all up.

Where it says desist riveting that was auto correct, it's DISTRIBUTION PANEL

On my last boat, I ran my LED's as follows:
1) boat LED's on the court light circuit to the OEM switch
2) transom LED's to the Aux switch
3) tower light bar on another OEM switch

doing single color LED's was a piece of cake. just tapping into the court light wiring in the boat or wiring a +/- into a switch. basic.

This time around I'm thinking of going all out and doing RGBW, which would require 5 conductors going to a controller. It's a TON more wiring. But in the end, I think it will be pretty awesome, so I'm thinking about making the big jump to RGBW.

I have to store mine all winter... garage is like 2 feet too short... really sucks.. so trying to get stuff done before I put it away.

- Green bulb to White LED replacement on dash pods (still have middle 2 to do, hard to get the green ones out.
http://i.imgur.com/Y3jhAUXl.jpg

- Tore out back carpet, still need to lay down the Bed Liner
http://i.imgur.com/N8on398l.jpg

- Going to cut access hole into ski locker to drain water from below the floor. (got the plate, just need to cut it)

- Getting a vinyl guy to come out and hopefully fix my rear storage locker cushions

I need a day off work to get shit done, just no time in the evenings with kids

That's the whole reason I couldn't bring myself to getting an LSV. I am in love with the playpen bow with the front wrap-around seating and the flip-up backrests!

I would rather have more seating and storage than a walkthrough open bow.

Seems like the majority of the public feels this way which is why i can't seem to figure out why SC stopped doing this in all of their new models.

I actually read an article from Fowler where he pioneered the idea of the playpen bow with Supra because he wanted more storage/seating. No one had ever done that before him!

George Fowler has been part of the boat business since he and Rob Shirley built the first MasterCraft in a garage. He is also the founder of Ski Supreme, Supra, Moomba, Aztec and now, Backwoods Boats. It's been an interesting ride . . .

L10: What's next on your agenda?

GF: I left and I took my $25,000 and started Supra in February of '80. At that time, when I started Supra, we were going to make a real recreational inboard ski boat. A cross between maybe a Sea Ray and a Ski Supreme or a MasterCraft.

L10: Now where was this at? In Tennessee still?

GF: In Tennessee. Right outside of Maryville, a little town called Greenback. MasterCraft was in Maryville. One of the little communities outside of it was Louisville, that's where Ski Supreme was. And then a little to the south of where MasterCraft was Greenback. I rented an old farmer's co-op warehouse where they stored fertilizer. I started Supra there.

L10: Now you had no partners at that time?

GF: No. I didn't have any partners. In '80 we were in another recession, big time. I liked that because if you try to get in a business when everything's running hard, it's like trying to get on a merry-go-round at full speed. It's hard to grab it and jump fast enough. So I felt that the best time would be to start in a real down economic situation so when the economy got better we could grow with the economy. So we started. We built a wide, high sided, fat looking boat. And it was a closed bow. We made three models of that boat by just changing the windshield style.

L10: What was the first model?

GF: It was Supra. One was called the Sport. One was called the Star. And the other one was called the Beast. In the Beast we put a big 454 in there. The side windows was what we changed on the windshield to make them look different. And of course the graphic name on it. We kind of broke new ground with this fat model. We even advertised it as just a family run-about and ski boat. After the lawsuit with Rob Shirley and MasterCraft I couldn't afford to retain an attorney for somebody coming after me again. So I went off in the southern area where CorrectCraft and MasterCraft and these other guys wouldn't even think at all. I wanted to get established before I did anything to invade their territory. So we started with this fat thing. They all laughed at it. But the people that still have them love them. The old ones.

L10: They're almost reminiscent of the boat that's now known as the Supra Launch, aren't they?

GF: Yeah, they sure are. They were all closed bows. So in '83 we cut the front of the boat out and made a bow rider.

L10: Now that was the first example -

GF: We called it the Supra Rider. And it was the first open bow inboard family ski boat at the time.

L10: The first inboard open bow?

GF: Yes. A friend of mine had a Sea Ray open bow. I sat and watched him and his family for two weekends using their bow ridge. And I thought, "Well, this makes good sense. We can waterski with the rope on the tow line.

Everybody's got to get up in the front, out of the rear seat, so we'll just open the bow up. It'll work and we'll make this open bow and families can still have a ski boat, and high sides will make everyone with kids feel safer. We were all comfortable with that so we went that way.

L10: What was the market response?

GF: Oh, it was real good. The biggest thing that I did different was that I didn't really make it a true walk through like you would see in a Sea Ray or in a lot of the boats today. I made a padded "playpen" area up in the front so that I could use the room that the walkthrough takes up for storage. I built in a cooler and made storage underneath the bow area. My goal was - is still - to make a smoother riding direct drive inboard ski boat with lots of room to put all your towels, pocketbooks and stuff

I love it enough that I narrowed my wishlist for a v-drive to an Axis A22, a Supra 21v, a Supra 24SSV, and a Moomba XLV.

Will likely work on the following:

1) hydroturf floor & swim step (already have material)
2) remove carpet from rear lockers and paint w/ liner
3) plumbed in fake a lake (completed)
4) new wheels & tires (already replaced tires)
5) front ski locker issue (ordered access plate)
6) 3 bank charger (also need new 3rd battery)
7) 750 's in the rear
8) replace rear lid shocks with better ones which allow the lid to stay open (may have to use a different size and/or change location). Anybody have some insight on this?

Replaced mine earlier this summer. Still only the 24lb push ones, but I moved the brackets on the cushion bottoms about an inch closer so the doors open just a little further, even beyond straight up and down, and hold just fine now.

The next jump up from 24lb push (at least on mine) were 48lb push and I didn't want to risk breaking/straining anything trying to get them to fold down closed. Or be bouncing along and have them decide to pop open on their own from the added pressure like ejector seats...

Not much is stock on mine. Struts I had measure about 12" or so fully extended. I couldn't find any 13" variations so I just moved the brackets in closer to gain the same effect.

Right! My built in cooler actually works great. Not sure what I'm going to do on that side if this all comes together. The thought of cutting and re-fiberglassing scares me. Plus all the cables and wiring harnesses run down that side and would be more exposed. May just leave it as is and build around it - have a weird little cubby storage spot.

My Winter plan we will see what happens

1. I would like to recover all the back seat and back deck. (I have a friend who just had is done in a tige by a local guy for $500.) not factor vinyl but it looks and feels real nice. so when I am done using my boat I am going to take it to him for pricing.

2. I need to replace my factor interior speakers I got 2 out of six blown.

3. I would like to do an automatic surf tab system. been looking at tab systems. (this is the big one.)

Berg.....you moved the bracket attached to the lid? Or did you move the bracket mounted to the boat. I tried drilling into the bottom of the lid but the material doesn't hold a screw. Anybody know what it is? I think the existing holes have threaded inserts but they bind due to the angle of the struts. Any chance you have a pic?

Yes, the one attached to the lid. I used self tapping stainless, the largest I could fit through the bracket holes. The material is kind of soft so I did a little pilot hole and screwed slowly,,,, ahem. If those ever strip out I will glue in some inserts and go to a bolt.

The soft material was also a concern for going to a heavier push strut - didn't want the brackets working loose. Could maybe get a pic for you tonight. But remember (or maybe not) mine was a blank slate going from a one piece rear lid to a 3 piece and adding hinges and struts.

Trailer fenders and paint
More tower speakers
Tower light bar

I haven't nailed my list down entirely yet, but I do plan;

-Fusion AV or MS-ip700i and remote
-Wifi router for use of Fusion remote app, using a dedicated iPhone / iPod in a waterproof case

I'm on the fence about;
-Swapping Exile Xi800.4 for Exile XM15.4 (this will have the 3 visible amps in my boat matching. Xi1500.1 is kind of hidden and is already Class D, so no real desire to change)
-Add 2 more Exide GC135 6volt golf cart batteries
-Build battery box sunk into floor of rear storage
-Rebuilt sub box to fire down under drivers helm (currently fire towards drivers seat)
-Transom LEDs
-Left/Right trim tabs, a la MC Surftabs - this is more because I get annoyed asking people to move seats, lol

Ian what is your reasoning to fire the subs down the hull?

Short answer; to make them louder.

I have them in a ported box firing into open air now - "loading" them (ie: firing towards the floor) will improve the output and sound quality, at least that's the idea.

Plus then I can build a new box with some sweet lexan and LEDs.

-Exile cabins/sub with javellin
-adding promotional graphics for Wakesurfgirl.com (our company)
-hopefully replacing swim pad traction due to shrinkage

Boat it's currently getting some gel coat repairs done (sellers ins.) And they are waiting on moomba side letters. May tell them to hold on install till I decide if I like the naked look with the new graphics better.

Mine has a semi-finished floor. The problem would be the gap between the floor and the seat bases for my model. Thought about snap-in carpet but would have to think of something to fill that 1/4" gap.

$100 in the materials and some time. It was way easier than I anticipated. It would be a little tougher if my floor section wasn't removeable. I did all of the work on some saw horses. It only took about 10 minutes to remove and replace. 4+- hrs to prep and install.

So part of my plans for the winter include adding some "base" to my boat. I have four tower 6.5 Rosewells and of course the factory kickers in the rest of the boat, but it is lacking some real good solid base.

I was wondering what others have done to there boat for adding a sub and box without giving up our valuable store space too much. My thoughts were to either build a custome box under the seat storage behind the cooler or actually building or buying a box that fits in next to the amps mounted on the gunwhale inside next to the battery.

Any suggestiongs? Leassons learned?

Thanks.

I had a heck of a time finding a box to fit under the helm so I ended up making one. I mounted it onto the hump under there and it's elevated a few inches above the floor. I feel like the rear facing ports are taking advantage of the air space under the front seats. I found this out while I had a stock kicker sub box temporarily jammed into this space and it sounded way better than it did in another boat. Plus, this area seems to be one of the dryer spaces in the boat. I would avoid placing a sub near the rear of the boat for fear it might be subject to moisture. My $.02.

Yeah my future brother in law has an 2009 Mobuis LSV and he put one back there behind the cooler, but I wasn't too much of a fan just because of the mositure. It seems to always get wet back there compared to near the battery or under the helm.

I deff intend on putting it elevated no matter what application I go for. I am leaning more to putting it near the battery, but I am affraid of storage issues and acces to my battery.

Thanks for the feed back and I will keep it posted on what I decide for sure.

Nice! That would be a good option as well I think. That will allow for more space in there around the battery. That pick would be a big help too. I have seen some premade marine sub boxes as well for like a 10 or 12. I really want to go with a JL sub and probably using a marine rated one for sure.

My winter list has gotten longer... and it's not even winter yet!!!!!!!!!!!

Troubleshoot and Fix ground loop noise on stereo (mostly done)
Fix bad connections on left channel of tower speakers (done)
Change polk towers for the Kicker 6500.2 HLCD setup (done)
Swap out starboard locker bag to an 1100 (done)
Install Fulton F2 Trailer Jack (done)
Install safety chain for bow (done)
Install Heatercraft 4 port heater
Custom surf platform made from HDPE and hydoturf
Ghetto gate
DIY FAE
Make some more of my DIY underwater transom lights and install
Install LED drain plug
Upgrade ballast pumps to Attwood T1200's, add vent lines and check valves (waiting for a black Friday sale)
Upgrade to the 1180 pound Gravity center basement bag (black Friday sale)
Install interior LED lighting doing a full RGBW system with a 4 zone controller and Wifi, cupholder and speaker rings, strip lighting in compartments so the white can illuminate them when needed.
Swap out trailer winch to something more substantial
Add red LED lights to top of trailer guide poles.
Add LED runway lights with digital bilge pump switch to trailer

put in an order at etrailer.com while they were having their free shipping promo.

Ordered up a new trailer winch. The current one I have is kind of scary about whether it’s engaged and locked or not. Honestly, it’s been pretty sketchy about knowing if it’ll skip a tooth and the boat could slide off when pulling it out of the water.
http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/pics/F/W/FW16000101_500.jpg

ordered a simple and effective spare tire mount. will get a matching spare over the winter.
http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/pics/m/t/mt70214_500.jpg

I also ordered a set of heavy duty ratcheting boat tie downs. They aren’t the cheap looking attwood ones from Walmart, but not the $65 boat buckle ones either. I think they’ll be okay and have gotten good reviews. and $31 is 1/2 the boat buckle price.

Hey Guys! been a while, just checking in from deployment to see ow the winter mods were going! As you guys knew last, I ran into my fuel pump dying out so I was unable to get out on the water before I shipped out. Still saving up some money, looking at making some purchases next month for the boat. As always, excited about getting things to work on when I make it back next year.

I hope everyone is enjoying their time to get their boats in order for next season. Enjoy your holidays and new toys, I'll be checking in every once in a while, while I am gone.

It sure as hell feels like winter now that it's dark about 5:00. I'm wondering how many of your boats are in a shop or garage over the winter?

Mine lives under a little carport thing so when I do scrape up an hour or two of freetime I find I'm looking out at the rain and highs in the 50's and think "do I really wanna go climb around out there and start into THE LIST?"

I'm going to add tower speakers. Brian and Rob at Exile hooked me up with a pair of XM9's and a XM15.4 amp. I'm also going to do something with the factory sub since I don't seem to be getting anything out of it. I'll figure that out as I get into this project. This will be my first time on a project like this other than ripping into the dash of my crappy car when I was a kid to try and install a stereo (this was back in the days of cassette decks) and making a huge mess of all of it. Hopefully this goes better than that, I think my wife will kill me if it doesn't.

Jason you're all good. Boats are way easier to work on when it comes to wiring and accessing components! I was kind of the same back in the day with an old truck and cassette deck, removing seats to add subs and reinstalling, and cramped spaces and twisting and contorting to reach things. Not so much in the boat. It's all right there thankfully.

Now doing anything in the bilge area is a different story...

Jason05216

I'm looking forward to it actually. And it does look much easier as you say. I'll let you know when I get it done. I've been looking at the threads about subs and looks like that may be a little tougher because of the space constraints under the helm.

Nothing to it. Just relocate the easy stuff higher and to the sides a bit. Then do a mock up with cardboard and make sure you can get it in and out. I put a 12" in there without even removing the driver's seat (it does swivel and has a flip up bolster). You can do it!

You may want to add some kind of material backing the area you moved the cleat too. I think the spots where they come from the factory installed are built a little more robust for the load. I know when I bought my boat it did not have any cleats on it and I took the cheap way out installing standard cleats instead of the pop up ones and they mounted them to side similar to how yours are and i have a couple that have spider cracked very badly due to the stresses of being tied up when another boats wake hits. I actually saw the gelcoat flex out about half an inch with my own eyes once. I wanted to cry.

Good point...I checked the front cleats since they are at a similar distance above the rub rail and there isn't any extra material so I think I'm good. I also had my dealer check the 15 model with the new placement similar to where I placed mine and there isn't any extra fiberglass or other material.

The cleats do have a plastic block that goes between the nuts and the hull that covers the whole area so I think that may take the stress. I guess only time will tell.

Beastia is in the garage, tower has been stripped of speakers, Upgrading to the new XM9s as of right now, maybe even go bigger, not sure yet.

For upgrades only real thing will be moving the rear pop-up cleats to the sides and getting the new 15 gunnel traction pads from SC for the Mojo.

Also got a set of the Wake Makers engine cover braces donated to the cause for testing purposes.

Trailer gets new brakes as I have wore the brakes off in 2 seasons. Dealer said they don't see brakes needing to be replaced after 2 years but then again my trailer has over 10K on it and most of its in the hills LOL.

I'm not surprised, hell I went through a set of tires in 9 months, why not brakes in 2 seasons LOL.

New XM9's?
Bigger?
What is Exile designing now?

The new XM9s are going to have larger more robust voice coils to handle more power.

As for as whats in the design pool? Can't say that publicly until I'm told I'm allowed lol.

Hey guys!

Doing my usual check in from down range! Things are going well through this deployment, as always very excited to make my way back home. While away I have made quite the wish list which my girlfriend has taken the liberty of ordering for me.

New Manifolds
New Risers
New Gaskets/Hardware
Hydro Turf to replace carpet
Replacing Carter fuel pump with the Holley Electric Fuel Pump

Hopefully I will save up enough and buy some new LED Kickers by Christmas time.

As always, I hope everything is going great this holiday season for you guys! Hopefully have the chance to check back in next month.

Oh, threw me off calling them engine cover braces....thought it was something for the engine hatch cover.....Just ordered 2 sets with my custom bags....cost a little more than DIY, but you can't beat the convienence or the powered coating....

That's what happens when you're drifting your trailer around the corners....

Yeah...I have been flying a wingsuit since 2005. I tend to have alot of expensive hobbies as you can notice, but hey...I have been though hell to be able to afford them so why not enjoy them is what I always say.

The best is when you have a lady skydiver that wants to do what they call a "wingsuit rodeo"......they jump out on your back.....it always makes for a good time and video.

so, wrapping up a few mods, nothing crazy this year as we're building a house and new baby on the way. But here are some simple cheap changes I made.

Painted tower cans Yellow to match the Yellow on the boat:
2167821679

Added heating pads tot eh drivers seat:
21680

Put quick drain valves in place of the engine block plugs:
21681

Things I don't have pictures of, yet:
Removed rear locker carpet and used rubberized undercoating, works great.
Just purchased an IBS from smorris7 and will plumb it in.
800's in both rear lockers.

That's pretty much my budget for this year!

One thing I did with the quick block drain is add the lock to lock the ball valve in the closed position then you will not need to put the plug into the ball valve. The down side is you will have to remove the ball valve to get this installed. but then to drain the block it is push up on the lock and turn the handle. no tools required.
