Correct way install thermostat

Pretty much, the side with the wax pellet faces the hot water. Not crazy about the gasket but there ya go.

How do you get the top of the thermostat housing to separate? I took the housing completely off the motor since I couldn't separate (see pics). Since the motor was painted they're stuck together and I wasn't quite ready to start hitting it with a chisel / pry-bar. Anyone else have this issue?

On the bright side, I found why I was running cold...thermostat stuck open :)

If anyone else has this issue, I got it with a 3ft pry bar and a towel wrapped around the end to protect the paint. Just pried between the inlets/outlets. Note the 2 gaskets needed if you pull both off (the ring and triangle). Also, for cleaning the old gasket surface, I just used a razor blade followed by some light sanding. For cleaning the surface on top of the motor, I put a towel/cloth in the open hole to keep from getting gasket shavings in the system.

Definitely agree...I found mine was stuck mostly open, and by stuck, it didn't open any more either. So underway temp stayed a cool 135, but when I slowed down it would start heating up as the impeller spun slower at lower rpms

It's a good chance to clean the transmission HX too
