what's your ballast setup to surf the 21v, helping a friend set up a 2006 21v?
sorry for the hi jack, pm if you like. No no, keep it here or PM the info too because I have a 2008 21V and my wife is always wanting to surf but I just don't feel like dealing with the hassle since my current set up produces an absolute sh*t wave which is just my G3 with 750's in rear lockers and stock 650 in center ski locker. My wakeboard wake is great, surfing not at all and I'd like to really get this set up right.

wolff supra21v

I am running the following
when surfing regular
750's rear lockers port side full starboard side around 300 or so
belly full I think it is a 1100 lb sac.
400 lb of lead around the nose
400 lb sac on the back deck
400 lb sac in the bow (we were surfing without this one but notice it really lengthens the wake out with it)
Most of the time we got crew of about six in the boat.
Speed 10.6 wake plate all the way up most the time. I play with the plate a litte to try and clean the wake up some.
This work well for regular I only have one friend who surfs goofy and he only comes out every now and than.
and on that side I set it up the same but also have to use the extra 400lb on the rear seat no matter what and it is never as good as the regular side.

http://i326.photobucket.com/albums/k414/grberglund/MoombaMobiusV/surf-wipeout.jpg

Shortly after this I had a lil problem with a fitting on my 1180 basement sac breaking loose. Drained off probably 1/3 or more of it so between the bilge runs on the float switch we had a few hundred extra in the very back surf corner. Didn't realize it at first but noticed the rub rail was touching the water and even under at rest and only 2 people sitting on that side. I was in the water, looking at it going 'wait a minute....'

Wave was taller than I've ever seen, maybe up to my ribs but pretty short. We chickened out and started draining after a short run because the wind started picking up it was going to get choppy.

I run goofy full regular at approx 65% floor full amd ibs full. Makes a good wave on both sides... love the easy switching with the flow!!! And best part was not once did I hear "can we tube??"

Ha, yeah all for your guys' amusement... There was an MC and another Malibu both out on a booze cruise that decided to pull up and watch us surf. So of course my buddy throws me that lifejacket and pushes me in. What a guy...

Got a chance to play around with the GoPro on the wakeboard some while letting my 13yr old practice driving. Perfect conditions for both! Nothing crazy - my knees are too worn out for that. Gotta start building up my pic/video arsenal for the winter offseason.

This one off Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AFEKNDK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Sticks really well to the boat - turns out it stuck really well to the board too. Other than that I just held onto it.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/412SLXtdztL.jpg

Also have a monopod with a few GoPro adapters that I've played with. It's mostly aluminum and plastic so no worries about rust and I think it is longer and sturdier than most of the telescoping gopro wand handles I've seen - cheaper too!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VZS2EU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Only downside is that if I dropped it in the drink I think it would sink pretty quick - maybe the camera too. Not sure the floats I have are strong enough to keep it up.

That's awesome man. I know when I was growing up we would have summer camps with the church youth group every year and people from the church would volunteer to bring their boats down to wherever the camp was and take us out for free time activity during the week. They donated their vacation time and their gas to take us out and that is one thing I will never forget. It is also where I was first introduced to Moomba! One of the volunteers had an old Mobius DD that I got to slalom behind and I was amazed at how quickly it was able to get me out of the water!

As nice as I try to keep our boat, you can only do so much right... Pulling the boat out at a dual ramp, a pontoon was unloading. First time boaters put the dang thing in forward instead of reverse and rammed us!?! Luckily the damage wasn't too bad. removed some platform padding, that needs to be replaced anyways, a little scuff in the rubrail and gelcoat above it, and bent the bar. Thankfully the bar is bent evenly and you'd not know it was supposed to be straight if you just looked at it, although it is scratched. It also chipped the gelcoat a little next to where the bar mounts on the left side. I'll fix that this winter, and probably straighten the bar out..

I just left. My wife was pissed, and Cam said the damage wasn't too bad. There were 3 or 4 other boats waiting to launch or pull out. They obviously had no insurance...

Yeh, I was quite surprised of the bend as well. haha

The front of their pontoon was hitting my guide post, thankfully, not allowing the other pontoon to hit the boat...

Russ,

We had two in the boat .

1100 rear plus a 155 plumbed under rear port corner seat.

750 on the floor, port side

1180 in the basement , 650 ibs manual fill in the bow.

About 250 in the starboard locker.

11.3 mph wake plate all the way down.

I think I did the math wrong , forgot the 250. Video on my FB page

He's much better than me, and I got a few neat shots of him...hopefully he'll upload them ;)

It was great to see Ryan again. I am still amazed how this forum brings people from all over the country together.

As Ryan said, we got rained off the lake in SoCal in August. That still blows my minds. That just isn't supposed to happen. Then we had a real fun time getting the boat out of the water. Bottomed out the trailer on the really sketchy remnants of a boat ramp due to low water levels and a 2wd Suburban. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/11/e7any3y5.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/11/yta8yhyr.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/11/azepype4.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/11/ta3y7e2e.jpg

About 2 minutes later all the lights in the boat blipped and went dark and the engine stalled out. I almost crashed into the transom. They started to come to a stop and all of a sudden everything came back on and the engine back to life.

"Time to head in!" Very weird...

Last night on the Maristar, I was helping him out by bringing my bags and showing him what his boat would surf like with a little weight. On a whim, I was done with a set and cut in with a possible 360 on the agenda. I was totally expecting to crash like I always do, as I've never even been close. I shocked myself as I spun all the way around and stayed up on the board. I of course fell out the back of the pocket but I was super stoked that I actually made that much progress. Of course the gopro wasn't running on that one. So I tried a couple more times and got this one on video. The wave on the maristar wasn't as long or as powerful as my Supra, so maybe I'll have a fighting chance with a better wave.

It's a Brigade "Radical" 4'10"
http://brigadewakesurfing.com/boards/#ready-to-ship-tab

my friend just got it and was super stoked. I could barely turn it with the 3 big thruster fins, I literally stopped my first ride and took out the center fin. Later he put in the skim fin (center only) and was starting to work on 360's.

it was a fun board, but I still liked the Doomswell I rode better...

Not necessarily. Bigger doesn't always mean faster. My 4'8 Ronix caption is faster than my 5'0 Ronix Koal illuminati. And I rode a 4'4" Doomswell Drone that was freaking amazing and super quick and agile.

Sometimes bigger helps, but it's not all about size.

VERY carefully! LOL. it's a skim board that supposedly has a 160 pound weight limit. (I'm 169). After I installed my surf system on my Supra, my buddy told me that the board just wasn't enough to freeride. So, I rode his board to prove him wrong. I did a lineride on it for a minute to get used to it, then tossed the rope and got my freeride on. the fin is almost worthless as the edge is really what's in the water. I did put a longer fin on it (like a 1.5") and liked it a little better.

It was slippery and squirrley, but I was able to get it done. haha.

I think that the Liquid force Fish is a decent starter board. you'll likely outgrow it in a year though. The ronix Koal fish is a good option as well. that will work with your skill level a bit longer.

The broadcast is another beginner board, but it's boring and I didn't even keep mine for the newbies. I just sold it to a friend.

I don't like the big long boards like the landlocks and such. they're just so much board to move around. If you can find something used for cheap, sure. But know that if you go some something like a broadcast or a fish, you might find yourself wanting to resell it later...

on my DD, to get a decent surf wave (listed), I had to pretty much slam it with a 750 on the surf side beside the doghouse, about
350 under the rear seat, and another bag on top of the surfside bag/back seat that was 650 or so. it was slammed and I had a custom surf platform to keep mine from cutting into my surf wave. every boat is different, but that's what I went through with my direct drive. eventually I fabbed up my own surf system patterned after what Nautique does, so now I can weight more equal and life is so much better.

Maybe aim for a board that's like 4'10 to 5'0. you'll likely be able to share it for a while. Then when you're both good enough for it to matter, you can start looking for something that suits your style/skill.

there are really 4 big things that factor into surfing....

Boat
Ballast
Board
Rider skill

to some extent you can compensate for weaknesses in one area with strengths in others. If you get stong representation in all areas, then you're rockin'.

Finally got some better video of a 360. Leading up to it not so good.... 10 yr old daughter was running my phone and was more worried about me hitting her with the rope than filming.. I can ride away from about 75% of them now..

Decided to hit up the lake today instead of the river. Had a great time. No timeline, no agenda, just me and the two that I love most.

started off with a wakeboard set. It was fun, but honestly not my best riding ever... But fun nonetheless.

Then much to my wife's dismay, I broke out the Slalom ski! (she doesn't really like pulling me because it's something I'm not a natural at. It took me a few pulls to get up, and while I can do it, I'm way better at wakeboarding and surfing...

All in all, a great day. even in a 22 year old Direct Drive!!!

Some pics from our trip to Lake Hartwell this weekend, when our oldest son and his wife were home visiting. Went to the rope swing near Isaqueena Dam. This is the small rope swing. I didn't get pics of the big one, about twice the height.

Rachel is 8, and did great getting up on teh surfboard this weekend. every time she got close to the wake the outside edge would go under and she'd fall. I need to get a smaller board for her to use...

I was using a regular camera trying to get a pic form the water, while trying not to get it wet, and of course when I snapped it a wave picked the low corner up. lol. It was maybe an inch off the water at rest.

I busted out the old XXX I hadn't been on in years. I can spin it outside of the wave holding the rope all I want, but couldn't get the spin while surfing down. I need to spend more time on YouTube....My wife would disagree with that tho. lol.

Had Cameron driving a good bit too :)

what weight bags u using? Going to have to try this with our DD also..

I have a Flyhigh tube sack under the rear seat ~350 pounds.
On either side of the doghouse, there's a 750 pound sack (20x20x50")
The small one on the seat we honestly don't know the weight. We call it the "baby bag" and guess it's around 150 pounds. I have two over the side pumps and we kicked out the extra money and got the check valves on the bags so that we don't have water spraying everywhere when we disconnect the pump to cap off the bag.

I've also got a smaller custom surf platform because my OEM swim platform was digging into the wave and killing some of the energy. My boat also has a ton of freeboard, so that helps me out when weighting it.

However, I also have a surf system installed on my boat so that I can run it level and get a great surf wave. Without that, I would have to run slammed in the rear. I would actually put a 750 on the surfside floor and put a 650 bag on top of that sticking into the rear seat. the baby bag would often not get used. I was running with water only a few inches below the rub rail at rest and water at the rub rail halfway up the hull when going.

If you want to run level like I do, you have to have some kind of surf system. I have NSS style blades. Others have done surf gates or "ghetto gates". Some have even mounted trim tabs as surf tabs like MC/Supra/MB are doing.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AeUz1UgrPug/U_NfWw5UcOI/AAAAAAAARbY/Re1qctpgKK4/s800/GOPR0777.JPG

And got my buddy out on the surfboard. it was his first time riding so I just put 350 pounds in the underseat ballast and delployed the surf blade. He was basically "skurfing" but he had a blast and got up the first time. I didn't feel like messing with filling the other 1500 pounds of ballast, so this was the "newbie" setting where beginners can learn to get up and lineride. :-)
http://youtu.be/Ro0RKtSzVcY

I did prove later that I could freeride with 350 pounds of ballast and a could kids in the back seat. Albeit for only 5 to 10 seconds leaning really far forward! But hey, I wanted to prove I could freeride a direct drive with almost no ballast. haha.

Our night surf got kind of spooky - it was so dark with no surrounding lights anywhere that when the rider went down it was hard to find them. Almost like playing Marco Polo until we got smart and got out the flashlight. Would have been much easier had we not forgotten the glow sticks at camp. None of the surf pictures turned out either.

I have to say that when I did night surfing, that having my blinking LED on my ronix vest made it a LOT easier for the boat to see me in the water after I went down...

It was just east of Steamboat landing, heading downstream. We left the marina at Steamboat and it was just butter on the Columbia last night ALL NIGHT. we literally motored out of steamboat landing marina at 6pm and started playing right there. Didn't even bother going into the Lady Island Slough. We didn't have to.

I would attempt a fix using fiberglass resin and fiberglass mat. I'm not sure if I'd try the patch from the top or the bottom, but I'd definitely fiberglass it.

As a temp fix, find something flat and screw it into the 4 corners of the bottom. like thin plexiglas or HDPE. or even cannibalize a rubbermaid bin.

I wanted to jazz up the trailer a bit - I pulled the wheels, painted the axles, leaf springs, and inner fenders black.

Then I got nutty and painted the cheesy trailer wheels black;

And finally, decided I needed a brake upgrade*;http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/26/duhazubu.jpg
*by upgrade I mean that I glued these plastic covers on my oem calipers, lol

Im actually thinking about switching my LED wiring to just green - I can't find an rgb controller that doesn't suck, and I never really use different colors.

I have a thing about exposed LEDs - I don't want to run strips that I can see - I'd want to either drill and surface mount individual pods (which would mean also paint to avoid rust) or mount on the bottom side of the bunks, but then I have to figure a way to hide the wires. That's when I gave up, lol

you'd have an OCD explosion if you saw mine then! not only are they surface mounted on the frame rails, but they are secured with zip ties to make sure they don't go anywhere! bahahahaha!

At least my LED strips are black and blend with my black trailer. Of course I used Black zip ties too!

Ian - check into the side emitting LED strips. May be just the ticket for you... Could look like a black pinstripe on the side of the frame by day, landing strip by night. Or maybe get really creative and mount them on the bunks...

I have like 40' of rgb 5050 SMDs in the boat - I really like the idea of putting them on the bunks, just need to figure out the wiring.

Ha - I figured... You know what I mean by the side emitting tho right? Instead of straight out like a typical strip, the beam is to the side. Could mount them on the inner frame rails or bunks aiming up.

Also, the compartment where my amps/batteries live would sometimes get hot and my amps would go into protection mode. so I added two LED 80mm computer fans. one is setup as a pusher and the other as a puller. I also have a pair of digital volt meters to monitor each battery directly. And the court light was replaced with an LED bulb.

Well, maybe the board isn't too small. I have a 4'8 and the smaller peeps do fine on it. maybe something quicker. I'm ultimately going to commit and get a higher dollar board. I rode a Doomswell and it took my riding to the next level. Same with the Soulcraft I rode. Getting a real surfboard is a game changer.

Bummer you're on the sidelines though. My wife tore her ACL during ski season and has been doing her 9 months of recover after reconstruction so she can't do any athletics until January.

I haven't rode many ... but it feels like it is a SLOW board. What model Doomswell/Soulcraft were u using?

Yah tell me about it ... in the end I will probably only be out 2-3 weeks so NOTHING compared to 9 months! This has totally changed my perspective on risk reward in the summer. Going to leave the risky shit until the end of the season where if I get hurt then it's not such a big deal.

I have ridden a 4'4" Doomswell Drone Squashtail. It was EPIC. took my riding to a whole other level. It's for the carves and rides fast. if this makes sense, it feels loose but planted at the same time.

Here is a review my buddy wrote up on the Soulcraft. I think he nailed it, so I'll just quote him.

Board: Soulcraft Da Honu 56"
Boat: 2012 MB Sport F-23 with custom (Surfgate style) surf system

This is my time riding a board from an 100% wakesurf manufacturer and I must say it was eye opening. Riding this board was like learning to surf again. It was similar in feel to the LF Custom Quad, but on an entirely different level. It is very fast and turns extremely easily and fluidly. The board turns very quickly that it was surprising at first, despite it turning so quickly, the tail stays firmly planted to keep you in control. It has a pretty aggressive concave which makes it respond best when carving and not when cruising. It definitely favors long and slow cuts as opposed to quicker erratic movements. The board makes you use your whole body to create fluid movements and a very intuitive surfing experience. It is extremely responsive and once you get used to it, it's like you think of where you want the board to be and it's there. It definitely takes some getting used to, but it is a very enjoyable experience. Definitely a board you want to ride over and over again for the pure joy of surfing. It is a different experience all together from any of the other boards I have ridden.
It is not a beginner board by any means and is one any rider any intermediate to advanced rider would greatly appreciate.

wow 4'4"?? I thought the 4' 8" was too small for me ... but I guess its just how the board is made. What height/weight are u? and was it really fast?

Yeah, it was all sorts of quick. The boards are made completely different. Read this:

Construction Styles:

Compression Molded wakesurf boards are made using the same construction as a wakeboard. This makes them a great option for beginners because they are more durable than surf constructed boards. Compression molded boards tend to be heavier and less responsive that surf constructed wakesurf boards so they are generally regarded as a beginner board.

Epoxy Fiberglass/Surfboard Construction boards are made from a foam core and covered in a layered glass. This makes the boards lightweight, but they are also much more fragile than compression molded wakesurf boards. The speed and performance of these boards makes them a favorite for more advanced riders.

Hybrid construction is when a manufacturer uses a blend of construction styles. The Ronix Mellow Thrasher is a good example of this because it features a soft foam top and compression molded construction. These boards are great for beginners and kids because it offers them a forgiving platform to learn on. The performance is more sluggish than compression molded and surf constructed boards because the foam top dampens the reaction between your feet and the board.

Boards that are made with surfboard style construction are more fragile, but they are way more buoyant and don't need to be that long. 4'6 would be the optimal length for me on the Doomswell though.

I am 5'10, 169 pounds.

Actually, I liked it. for a bombproof little board, it actually performed better than I thought. it was a bit quicker than my Ronix Koal Illuminati.

I was riding it behind a Moomba Mojo with factory ballast + the wrap around under the seat bow sack and Flow.

The wave I was riding it on was underwhelming. But given a better setup, It think it would be a perfectly fine board.

So, maybe just keep at it and get more experience? hard to say.

But yeah, the board was pretty decent for a mass produced board and I don't think it's really gonna be all that limiting as it's certainly faster than my Koal was. Does it have fins you can change? maybe try that. too much fin will make a board hard to turn.

It's actually Central Oregon. Prineville Reservoir state park. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive (when you don't have blowouts). Central Oregon is called the "high dessert". it's over 3000 feet and lots of ponderosa pine and the like.
