So reading on Wakeworld and some other sites, I have seen some guys making new swim platforms that are smaller and don't interfere with the wake for surfing. my original platform definately slices the water and disrupts the "push" for the wave.
So my dad and I have been talking about it, and finally pulled the trigger. we ended up finding a nice piece of "Marine plywood" at a local store in Columbia SC. also bought some marine paint to make it look nice. pretty close to matching the boats color. So far we have cut the plywood, rounded the edges to match the orginal platform, and also cut the same contour to match the back of the boat. we also used a router to round the edges all the way around the platform to make smooth, and of course sanded. over all demensions of the board are 48x24, and have plenty left over if we need to make another one. I will need to apply about 2 more coats of paint, and i will probably put a layer of clear poly on top to give it extra protection.

once I get a chance to test it out i will put more pics up, give some feed back.

You may want to double check that the hydroturf will agree to the Staboard.

I encapsulated some plywood in fiberglass and and used hydroturf to pad the top.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/17/e7a3a3yg.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/17/vu7u8aqa.jpg

So not meaning to thread jack, but you guys really think a little spray off the platform is killing the push? Is your spray hitting lower or higher on the wave?

You have me wondering (yet again) and watching a vid from last summer to see how much mine is cutting into the wave.

Is your spray similar?

Very curious how much difference it really makes so I'll be watching your review.

Another perspective here -

In my case the splash appears to be going to the high side of the wave. You think that will negatively affect push?

Berg - In all honesty I don't think the smaller platform makes any significant difference. Maybe a little but not a must have item.

I have noticed that the surf side corner sinks a bit deeper. My guess is that the larger swim platform was acting as a trim tab.

Your platform doesn't seem to be creating extreme interference. I had quite a bit of water that would travel over mine.

What's the aprox size of the platform?

I know my stock platform cuts heavily into the wave...

Going by memory, I think the rough size is 24 x 48.

Sinks deeper with the stock platform or the surf platform?

Sinks deeper with smaller platform.

Or, at least in my mind.

Regardless if it works or not, or has any affect on the wake, it is a project for me and my dad to work on... which is always priceless and worth the memory. Its all a bonus if it works. plus it is an easy (not to costly) project. Then at the end of the day you can say you atleast tried something different. If i don't like it, then i can unscrew the one we made and put the old one back on...

BJ- I like your style.

Starboard = Spendy! I just used some of this stuff to rebuild my rear locker walls and supports. Used 1/2" black but they have colors. It cuts easily but seems pretty sturdy. I'd go pretty thick for a platform though. Maybe double stack some 3/4".

Bergermaister- we did look into it, it was going to be pretty spendy for what what we were wanting to do. We are going to try this way, and if we need to remake it, or try something different, we have plenty of Wood left over. I honestly think what we have will work for what it will be used for... (getting in and out of the boat).... but this is the fun of it.. trial and error!!

24x54x3/4 is 80lbs....I wonder how much the platform weighs, I didn't think it was that much...

Really? I got 2 sheets of 1/2" 24x48 and I'm quite sure both together when they arrived didn't weigh that much. Maybe 30lbs total.

so I was able to go out and test the platform yesterday. I am happy with the results, none of the platform touches the water while underway. I was able to ride ropeless right off the bat with no problems and rode quite a ways on top of that... The one thing I will need to do is get a non-slip pad for it, but otherwise I am happy with the results.

I went with a Hydroturf blem and I have been happy with it.
