Rules are:
1) Gotta be one of the old guys
2) Vids or it didn't happen
3) Failed attempts are welcome so we can coach (ie make fun of each other)

How old is old (I'm 48 )? Did them in previous years, not one last year though, and got first one this year this past weekend (behind a Centurion not our Moomba)...no vid so no count I know. I use surf style boards with big a$$ fins, IS Sweet Spot and Flyboy (before IS made them).

Hopefully I can try again and succeed some time again this year and capture it.

Speaking of tricks..

I was doing a drifter last weekend and caught the edge, I couldn't believe how fast and hard my entire body hit the water. Almost as bad as catching an edge on a wakeboard.. Wish I had video..

Got chased off the water by lightning yesterday. Never even got a chance to surf. Got in a couple (bad) wakeboard runs though. Beautiful day turned to crap in under 10 min.

Had Go-Pro all charged up yesterday but didn't bother. By the time we got on the water the wind and traffic made it feel like being in the ocean. Had to run 8mph upstream to get a decent wave, 12mph downstream to make up for the current (StarGazer). Weird huh.

Well, we had almost perfect water from 11 - 3 and then lightning. Got all of our wakeboarding in and let our guest's kid surf then had to empty and load up. Oh well.

Got out yesterday on the gator filled lake 5 min. from the house. Had a buddy with a boatload of people watching nearby. Some of them wanted to try surfing after watching. Anyway, I did a 360 and kept on going another 90 and almost rode out of it goofy but I was too surprised. I think I'm getting closer though. Have to be sure and shoot some vid next time out so y'all can laugh at me.

parrothd, from watching you i'm trying to climb up to high on the wave before spinning... i'm going to try spinning at the bottom and see what happens. I can get around but over rotate or dig an edge in...

You need to go up the face of the wave and turn and go back down, if you do it on the flats you'll just pearl..

Not sure if you are going into the wind when you are losing the pocket there or what. But . . . if you can teach your driver to turn left a little to give you some help you can usually get it back. Good luck. Some decent attempts but you have a little ways to go, I think. Maybe you need a blue boat. :cool:

At that point in the trip I was just thankful my driver would drive... Even if it was zigzagging across the river, then upstream, then down and back again. Makes it tricky to keep a consistent wave along with my human ballast playing musical chairs that morning. I was just happy to get in a run before we packed it up for the 3 hour ride home!

Yessir - started on the TripleX skim. Then switched to my old standby Inland Surfer Squirt - my true love. Seriously thinking about selling the TripleX and pursuing a true surf style board to replace it. Thin the herd some.

The TripleX is a great board and I'm sure I'd keep it if I were a better rider. Spins with ease. The IS feels a bit faster and more stable for my clumsy arse though. I've been able to surprisingly recover from pretty far back on the IS at times where I would fall out on the TripleX.


Always wanted to try the wakeboard - just too much rocker to find a sweet spot!

Better than me - last few times I've brought the fully charged GoPro out I'd hit record and the damn thing would shut off. Apparently it doesn't work too well without a memory card in it.

I have a new secret weapon I'm still waiting to unleash here. Not sure how it will spin. It may want to take flight instead.

Well...., go pro was charging when my dealer came by with a G23 he was lake testing. Second attempt and i got around but couldn't stay with the boat. Seemed like a success to me though...

I found I was spinning to fast... slowed the spin down and it came together pretty quick

Fail on Sat. At least I got to surf. Was a cool day as it was the first time all 6 kids surfed. They had a blast. Anyway, I'm trying to spin too fast too. Need to work on it, but when?

Is it too late to the party? I met all the qualifications; albeit on the younger side (36)... however I have had 3 knee surgeries and just blew out my 4th ACL 2 weeks before this 360 attempt (I guess my wakeboarding days are over) Given my knees are equivalent to a 65yr old, I think my average age more than clears me for this competition :). Nonetheless, after trying surfing for the first time this year, I was successful in doing the 360 after many failed attempts. Anyone that wants advice behind a Mondo '14 I'm here to help, I'd be happy to trade you for some wake advice (still working on my configuration).

the secret was

a. the board (I used my friends Ronix 4"8' with a 2 inch fin)
b. getting REALLY Close to the platform so I had time to stay in the wake
c. spinning with my hips and having fresh legs

i'm 32.. hurt my knee a few times wakeboarding.. never tore anything official according to docs... but I can't stand up after sitting without limping it off for a few minutes.. definitely too old to attempt wakeboading anymore..

100% surfer now.. need to figure out this 360 thing so i have some more fun behind the boat... can get the 360, but never stay with the wake... i hope next year I can get some more time behind the boat...

Thought for sure I'd be surfing more this year with my new boat, but actually surfed less.

Once I got over my fear from my big wipeout last year I've made huge improvements wakeboarding. My legs have been cached with long 30+ minutes wakeboard sets so there's nothing left. I've been working on switch and 180s all summer...

The only other board I've ridden is a CWB ride. And I didn't customize it. I talked to them on the phone and they were very helpful with the questions I had and told me to call any time if I had more questions. Great customer service. I bought it from Rinkers here in Houston.

been workin on my 3's this past weekend too ... using a P5 Danielo Carbon Small (4'3"). Board actually spins too much ... first time I tried I did a 720. Tried at least 10 more times and I'm over-rotating almost every time. Any tips on how to pull out of the spin?

Same issue.. Lots of 540s/720s..

Make sure to turn your head and look at the boat, this should help you stop rotating. Also, try removing the Fins or run the board backwards for a few runs. On my board you really have to edge running backwards to keep control which then should pay off with the fins..
At least I hope so, I haven't surfed much this year. When I do, I've been trying to do a drifter into backside180, and front side 180 with the board reversed but haven't had much luck..

Well,I have been trying,,,, think this is my 3rd official season of giving it the ol' schoolboy try and Saturday I nailed it and almost a second in the same set. I have been world champion at doing the 360 then washing out of the back but I finally did it, and it was really easy once I did. No camera as why would I want to have tons more footage of me not making it, but I did have a couple extra witnesses so I have backup...... I know, I know, no footage and it didn't happen. Now maybe it will motivate me to charge the GoPro and see if I can ever do it again.

Biggest thing I was doing Saturday was grabbing too much water to make the turn, I was pulling myself into the prop wash. I concentrated more on turning the board then just took a light swat at the water to speed up the rotation. It went surprisingly well and surprised me since I have done sooooooooo many only to come around and be heading away from the boat at an alarming rate. To be turned around, still in the wake, and surfing almost shocked me too much to keep going. It was nice to FINALLY nail it.

I am using a Soulcraft that my wife had made, surf style with the quad fin setup.

Had a couple solid attempts on Sat. On one I did a 540 and just about rode it out anyway. On my best one I ended up facing the boat and tried to pump some but lost the wave. I'm gonna nail it during my week vacation coming up.

I haven't had the legs left to work on much surfing this year, to busy wakeboarding. Was on vacation last week on a lake (can't wakeboard on lakes anymore) so I ended up surfing a lot. Worked on surfing goofy on the regular wave and trying to 180 from regular to goofy and reverse and shuvits. Had a lot of close ones where I could almost ride them out.. Really helps of someone is taking video and make sure you have a spot/reference point I tend to over rotate too..

Yea, I don't understand it but lots of people can rip right around on those. I always feel too "locked in". Maybe it's cuz I have to be so far forward on them and you need to be more at the back.

From the lessons I had last year..

Looks like your trying to start the turn in the flats(and actually you turn the opposite way first) with no forward speed.

You need to come in with more speed(you come in and stop then turn) then turn up the wave, spin around and back down the wave..

Make sure to start pumping asap to help stay on the wave..

I can't seem to stop the spinning part, usually spin around a second time and lose the wave.

I haven't actually completed one where I can surf onto the next trick, so take with a grain of salt.. :)

I finally tried the 360 for the first time after being inspired by this thread. It was behind my brother-in-law's MC X30 surf machine (it spoiled me) on a Ronix Carbon.
I made the 360 but came too far outside of the wake to keep going so no cigar. It was a good solid one and only attempt.
This week I will put a Ghetto Gate on the Moomba and try with my lesser board. Great stuff on this thread!

Came close about 5-6 times but no cigar. All of the kids started trying it too. My youngest daughter probably has the best shot. She just patiently surfs in a circle and just about rides them out. She's only got about 6-7 tries so far and is so close I have to think she's going to get it before the rest of us. Me? maybe never.

Mainly I was trying to snowboard/brute force the spin with my body by trying to load up and spin around and use my head to spot the end of the spin. This would cause me to over rotate or rotate just enough to have the board pointing the right direction but me being off balance and falling.

For me, I slowly come down the wave to the front near the boat, crouching, and looking down at the wave. Then I use both hands(the depth into the water and force is the key) to dig into the wave, this starts the spin and slowly enough that you can make the turn and come around. I also look down and watch the wave so I can see the exit. Previously I was looking at the boat or some other reference point. By looking down and using my hand(s) to start the spin you can actually see what doing on...

Now that I've got the 360 & 180s down, if you're over rotating, drag your left hand in the water to stop the spin. Start the spin with your right, then when you come around use your left hand to act like a spin brake..You can even use right hand and smack the wave to get going straight..

Well, your posting skills are impressive. I can post up videos all day of pro riders like JJ Wolfe or Drew Danielo nailing 360's all day too. But, unless you have a vid of an old guy nailing one, please save the vid for the PRO threads on here. This is the OLD GUY thread, not the young girl or PRO thread. I'm perfectly aware of how to post such video I just didn't happen to get one (video) that day. By the way, since you quite obviously shoot video all day every day, please, please post up just ONE video of the esteemed WOLFEMAN nailing just one 360. We are all waiting to see it. Thanks in advance!!!!!

Well, you got it now. Just have to get on the front foot coming out. I always get on it too early and wash out (cept for that one undocumented time I rode it out :cool:). Had 3-4 good ones last w/e but couldn't duplicate it. Oh well. Still so much fun to try!!!!

So close! You need some forward speed, start at the back of the wave and slowly come forward then make the turn. That'll help keep you in the pocket after the spin. Use your hands to start and stop the spin if needed..

Try moving your front foot toes closer to the edge, help you get a better edge and control..;)
