the amp has been inoperable for about a year now.

My wife is starting to bug me about getting it fixed so the towers speakers (Exile SXT something) will work again while she surfs .

Head unit works fine, 6 cabin speakers on a JL amp work fine, but the Harpoon amp is telling me it is protect mode.

I even forget how the amp is telling me this - light or something on the face.

How do I go about trouble shooting the cause?

Ed,

Disconnect the speakers from the Harpoon, then power it up, if its still in Protect then the amp will need to be repaired or replaced.

If it powers up with no issues then turn the stereo off.
Plug each set of speakers in separately, Left and turn the amp on, everything ok, then try the right.

If at any point the amp goes back into Protect mode then you have a Bad speaker.

DO the same type of thing.

Take a speaker down if they are quick connect. If not you will need to disconnect it and try each speaker one at a time till it goes into Protect.

If this is the case you have a bad speaker.

Try some of that out and let me know what you find.

Ed - mike is correct. need to figure out why the amp is in protect. "protect" is usually a sign that a bad situation is happening. The question is--- is the bad situation outside of the amp? or is it internal to the amp. Do exactly as Mike laid out and the answer will reveal itself and you can take the correct course of action.

Cheers!

-Brian

sounds easy enough - thanks guys.

Really appreciate the quick responses.

another thought - if the kicker dual zone control went bad, could that put the amp in protect mode?

I'll try the speaker disconnect 1st before worrying about that.

I'll try the speaker disconnect 1st before worrying about that.

Not normally unless it shorted within its self and sending voltage to the amp.

Amp Protect normally means its seeing a voltage <short> and can't distinguish what its supposed to be.

Mike....great tips you gave me! Thanks again.

Did exactly as you said - the amp did stay in protect mode with the speakers disconnected. It stayed in protect mode until I disconnected the HU signal wire.

Guess the amp needs some TLC.

I still have the Kenwood amp that the Harpoon replaced. Did a temporary installation with that and the speakers work fine...just not as well as with the Exile :)

Brian - will be contacting you via PM.

Regards!
